Well seeing as how video game consoles haven't been around for very long at all I would assume it would be Atari. That or what was the other one...it sounded completely retro but even these consoles aren't THAT old. Give it another 10-15 years and then ask the same question and we can see.

The Atari 2600 is the longest lasting, that being a true fact. It wasn't discontinued until 14 years after it being released.

What do YOU think?

kill_m3s4r

You see there's the problem. The console that has/had the longest lasting lifespan is a FACT, not an opinion.

PS1, had a long lifespan, i read once that on the week it was discontinued (sometime in 2006), game sales were higher for PS1 then those of the gamecube....

then again is that a big achievement? the gamecube was a good system but sold very badly so no

NES had new games coming out from '85 to '94 and was viable that whole time.

Hm, after reading up a bit, the Famicom (the NES' Japanese name) came out in 1983. :o That means it was supported from 1983-1994. Wow.

It is also necessary to figure the games themselves into this issue. Most cartridge based games are in danger of their contacts being either worn out or oxidized away from neglect. The 2600 largely avoided this issue by keeping the contacts away from the grubby little mitts of their owners. The spring-loaded mechanism which protects the contacts ensures that the games stay clean even if the owner is an idiot.

I've never even had to clean a 2600 game and none of them were purchased new. The labels may fall off as the glue rots away but the games work wonderfully. I love my six-switch woodgrain eyesore. There are still independant parties who whip up new games for the 2600 once in awhile as well. Like the DC, its official support is long dead but it still sparks enough interest to gain new titles.

Regardless of who the current champion is, I think the Playstation 2 is ready to take over this honor, unless they quit making games real fast.

Also, about Atari. The Atari of today has nothing in common with the Atari that made the classic video game systems. Its just that the name was bought.

Since I am including the VC on the Wii I will argue that the NES is the champ. As the old games are still being sold and "supported". And Mega Man 9 is an 8-bit game (I'm pretty sure.) So 1983 - present.

Well the longest lifespan for a console on the market has to be the Atari 2600. It was released in October 1977 and discontinued on January 1st 1992. Though people are still making homebrews for the system. Check out Halo 2600. But if you are talking about durability I would say its the Magnavox Odyssey. It was released in August 1972 and I have one that still works perfectly today after 38 years. If you are talking about the sytems that have games that are still fun to play today, well then thats really a matter of personal opinion. I love some Atari 2600 games and NES games and so on but heck I still like playing pong sometimes so it varies depending on your preference.

Drop the N64 and you're fu**** I've done it a few times myself and they've broke instantly. Infact, a few weeks ago there was some man in my local game shop asking if they repair N64s because his son dropped his :L I guess you would consider this an 'outside factor' though.
