A lot of people seem to enjoy the Halo series, but it is in my opinion one of the most over-hyped franchises ever. Seriously now, I haven't forgotten all the talk and hype leading up to the Halo 3 release... the rumours, the buzz, the Gamestop pre-order bonuses, the bickering between fan-boys...
Then, upon release day there were reviews pouring in left and right singing it's praises, Gamespot even gave the game a very lofty 9.5 rating. Wow, if I didn't know better from playing the previous 2 games, I would have thought that this is the holy grail of video gaming.
I've played the first game and didn't feel it was anything special. Didn't like the shooting action, didn't like the physics, didn't care for the story... in short, no sir I just didn't like it. Then I got the chance to play the 2nd game with my buddies on numerous occasions. My friends thought it was the greatest thing ever and constantly nagged me to join them in some multiplayer. I eventually reluctantly agreed, and while they seemed to be enjoying the experience, I couldn't hold back the yawns.
And the third? Well... perhaps the people reviewing the game really did enjoy it as much as the review scores imply (in which case, good for them), or perhaps there was simply too much time and money involved in advertising and promoting the game to give it anything less than a 9? I dunno, it's probably both... all I know is, it's not that great. Not bad mind you, but not that great.
Then again, such is the nature of opinions that they work the other way around too... there's a few games I really love that others deem over-hyped as well.
Resident Evil 5 is one of those games, ive just got it recently , and while its a good game, its not as good as what the pre launch hype claimed it to be.
instead of playing resident evil, I found I was playing some over the top shooter.
GTA4, great game, but considering the hype around it, and the previous entries in the series, it lacks in the single player aspect.
the fact that I never finished it pretty much sums everything up
Bioshock in my opinion wasnt fun. beatiful maybe if ur into the whole depressing themes kinda thing and inovative i guess to a certain extent but dat dosent make it enjoyable. o and halo 3 just flat out sucks honestly its just bad. if another series woulda brought about the innovations that halobrought then no one would be talking about halo 3at all. halo just got lucky thats about it.
Yeah, definitely Spore. You don't even know how excited I was for that game, and it was such a let down with (what you said) really cool creation tools. Didn't even make it to the planetary stage. On the 360, Crackdown for sure.Spore. I thought it was going to change the world of gaming for good. What we got was just a decent hybrid game with awesome creation tools and bad DRM.

It's funny when people pick games that are critically acclaimed AND have a loyal and passionate fanbase that still play the game.
For a game to be a failure it is typically abandoned by EVERYONE, not just you.

It's not just my opinion its registered fact. This game WAS overhyped and DIDNT live up to it to anyone.
COD4 to me wasn't as good as advertised, but i would be ignorant and wrong to say it was a failure. It got rave reviews and had a strong online community, wasn't a failure.
just like many of the AAA games that always show up on these lists...
People confuse big advertisement budget for overhyped all the time.
If the game had millions of happy fans, it probably wasn't a failure. if the game has a metacritic score above 9.0, it probably wasn't a failure. If the game STILL has thousands of people plugging away day and night on its servers, it probably wasn't a failure...
YOU just didn't like it, get over yourself.
exactly, yet it seems a few people didn't pick up on that though, but my choice would have to be too human, that game was on tv and websites almost on a daily basis and with the whole "in development for 10 years" talk behind it they had quite a bit to live up to but unfortunately it just didn't, it failed critically and with the fans as well. It's funny when people pick games that are critically acclaimed AND have a loyal and passionate fanbase that still play the game. For a game to be a failure it is typically abandoned by EVERYONE, not just you.
