In this thread you can mention games that are generally seen as good or even outstanding, yet you feel they get (or got) more praise than they deserved (in your opinion, of course).

Note that overpraised does not equal overrated.

My list:

Mortal Kombat II (MK series in general), Doom II (I love Doom, but Doom II seems a little overpraised to me), Duke Nukem 3D (yeah, it was fun but not that fun), Quake (good graphics for the time, mediocre single player), Quake II (fun multiplayer, average single player), Unreal (great graphics for the time but a little boring game to me), GTA III (the 3D GTA games in general), Halo (very good shooter in its time, but not the father of FPS games like some think; also sequels got a little generic), Call of Duty (good war shooter, but far too overpraised; also the sequels are generic), Counter-Strike (it's only so popular because it's free), Super Mario 64 (yeah, blasphemy :P ; ground-breaking game, but not that great as some try to picture it), Super Mario World (I'm sorry, but Yoshi's Island is just better), Donkey Kong Country (even I have to admit that game was so popular because of the graphics), Ocarina of Time (yeah, another blasphemy :P ; amazing game in it's time, but I find Majora's Mask better), Tomb Raider (nice game in it's time, but the series sold so well only because of Lara Croft), Ridge Racer (solid arcade racer but nothing amazing)

Can't think of more atm.

And again, this is just my opinion :)

one person's garbage is another person's treasure I guess, there is no universal answer.

though I hate Command and Conquer Generals , when alot of people liked it , so there you go I guess.

I didn't say those games are bad by any means, infact I enjoyed most of the games I mentioned. But I just feel they aren't deserving all the praise they're getting (or got) and that's the point of this thread :)

I agree with you on Ocarina of Time ONLY because it stole the spotlight from Majoras Mask :( Which is my favourite game of all time, but OoT is very close behind.

What's the difference? You say overpraised does not mean overated. So what do you think the difference is?

If you do have something else in mind to discuss, maybe you should tell us andedit the first post so that it's clear. Since most of us agree the word's mean the same thing, but some people may think of them differently.

How did Ocarina of Time steal the spotlight from MM when it came out two years earlier? Its debatable which is the better game but OoT left a bigger impact and set the stage for Majora's Mask.

Makes sence to me. It's because it came first and made a bigger impact, people make a much bigger deal about the first, thus stealing it's spotlight.

Like with Perfect Dark and Goldeneye on the N64. Goldeneye revolutionized FPS's on consoles, but most people who played Perfect Dark agree that it improved on it in almost everyway. But Goldeneye still gets way more praise because it came first.

Counter-Strike (it's only so popular because it's free)

It's popular due to the fact that it's one of the most competitive games there is, and it's not free:lol:

I tend to dislike these kind of threads because no matter what the game there will always be one someone mentions that offends someone else. Overrated and the like are words that are thrown around so much lately people dont even use them in the right context anymore, nothing good ever comes of it and if anything it seems more like it should be called "games everyone loves but you dislike" since theres no way to back up why a game doesnt deserve the praise it got, it wouldnt get praise if it wasnt good.

Mario 64. Great 3D game, but poor camera control hinders it.

Final Fantasy VII - You'd think it was the only game in the world.

MGS 2: Great game mechanics, but the entirety of the gaming world was rooked in to think they were going to play snake the whole game. Why not make Raiden the friendly NPC?

Perfect Dark: Goldeneye 007 fancified with an engine. At least with Goldeneye you didn't need an expansion pak.

Top Gear: Were the devs too lazy to give you a full screen singleplayer game?

Metal Gear (NES): Come on... "UH OH, THE TRUCK HAS STARTED TO MOVE?" The jungle you can go up and down, but left and right are infinite?

Certain Final Fantasy games deserve the recognition they get, such as 3/6. 8 is good, 10 is OK. But the whole series shouldn't be a sweeping generalization of praise.

I really disagree about DKC in the OP - played it when it came out and remember loving it for more than just the graphics.

As for overpraised, I'd probably go with FF7. It's a good game, but not one of the best (imo) as it's often made out to be.

No... just... just no.

What do you see so good about it? It's just Rainbow Six mixed with Quake II and simple "diffuse the bomb" gameplay :D

I agree it was an important game in it's time, but it's now totaly outdated imo. And it was a free mod for Half-Life.

I mentioned Ocarina because of the amount of people who say it's the best game of all time. I agree it was an amazing game in it's time, but I find it funny that so many think it's the best game ever when Majora's Mask may arguably have a more interesting world, better designed dungeons, more diversity, a more interesting plot, ect.

That's not to say it wasn't a highly important and influential game during the time of release.

agreed, the final fantasy series is very overrated

for me its specific FF games. for instance, FF12 got praised to the high heavens, but I thought it was mediocre, everybody likes FF6, and while I do think its an excellent game, its not the be all end all of RPGs. Killzone 2 is another game I felt was overpraised, the reviews said it was an amazing FPS, but what I found was a decent FPS with amazing visuals, nothing more.

there are some final fantasy games that are awesome, Final Fantasy 6 being my favourite, the problem is that as long as it's part of the main final Fantasy series it can do no wrong on the eyes of many people, including reviewers, I still can't believe FF 13 got an 8.5 on gamespot

and yes, I agree Killzone 2 isn't as good as what people say. But then again I love halo 3 and a lot of people feel the same way about halo 3

FF13 was disappointing , sure it looked amazing, but it was linear, some people say "its different, linearity isnt a bad thing" and you know what, they are right, but FF13 took it too far, most of the time you were allowed to walk on a single path.

I mean fair enough , games like FF1 have dungeons that are quite limited, but they had the excuse of being on the NES, in a cartridge that was probably smaller then 1 Megabyte, not a PS3 with a blu ray (or 360 with multiple DVDs)

the story was also a bit of a mess, and just generally confusing.

funny enough the battle system kind of reminded me of the battle system in Panzer Saga, with the whole multiple ATB bars , but Panzer Saga was more fun , much more interesting ,much more playable .

too bad PDS costs £100+ , but FF13 costs £10+ ........

yeah i've tried a bunch of them, a friend of mine was a huge FF fan, but I just never could get into them. Not BAD games or anything, but I just would like to see a FINAL FINAL fantasy. There's nothing Final about 1,000,000 games called "final fantasy"......

Well you do have a point in that at the time it was the most impressive console game, graphically speaking. It did receive a lot of praise just for it's graphics, but rightly so as it was well deserved. I felt at the time that the gameplay and music matched the quality of the visuals and it became one of my favorite games. I have heard that the game doesn't hold up too well today due to some cheap level design (barrel to barrel shooting in particular). I haven't played it recently so I might just be looking at it through my nostalgia-colored glasses.

Im probably one of the few people who dislikes pre renderd sprite graphics like in DKC or Sonic 3D Blast. I don't know, I prefered either full 3D or traditional sprite graphics. though DKC is still one of the best example of a pre renderd game done right.

The funny thing is that many (myself included) saw those pre-rendered graphics in DKC at the time and thought it was the best thing ever, a 32-bit game on a 16-bit system, so to speak. But now that I'm older I think "clean" sprite graphics look better than DKC style graphics. Although I agree that DKC has really used these type of graphics to great effect (and Super Mario RPG too).

I think DKC looks good even to this day, but my problem is not with the graphics, but with the shoddy, uneve and unbalanced level design that the game had.

[QUOTE="Darkman2007"] Im probably one of the few people who dislikes pre renderd sprite graphics like in DKC or Sonic 3D Blast. I don't know, I prefered either full 3D or traditional sprite graphics. though DKC is still one of the best example of a pre renderd game done right.TheTrueMagusX1

I think DKC looks good even to this day, but my problem is not with the graphics, but with the shoddy, uneve and unbalanced level design that the game had.

while I wont say its bad by any means, I do think there are better platformers on the SNES, such as Mario World 1/2 and Mega Man X.

I agree with you on Ocarina of Time ONLY because it stole the spotlight from Majoras Mask :( Which is my favourite game of all time, but OoT is very close behind.

This. OoT is a fantasic game, easily one of the best ever, but MM is better in every way. The only reason it isn't recognized as such is probably because it lacked the WOW! factor of OoT, with OoT being the first 3- d Zelda and all. MM is underrated.

I think Super Mario RPG, Shadow Of The Colossus, Goldeneye and both the Chrono games are IMMENSELY overrated, but that's just me.

I agree with Super Mario RPG, Goldeneye and Chrono Cross being 'IMMENSELY overated', but I wouldn't say Shadow of the Colossus or Chrono Trigger are. Sure, some fans will overrate the latter two, mainly with dedicated Shadow of the Colossus fans calling it 'a piece of art', which it isn't...but there's always been games that were received better by critics on each of their consoles: God of War and Link to the Past, for example. Personally, I feel they're both awesome games and they're among my all time favourites, but I understand that some people may not like them as they're not games that could appeal to everyone (which is what makes Mario so great and popular).

All video games are a work of art.
