IGN wrote an article debating whether Ocarina of Time is overrated. I say only slightly because there are other stellar Zelda games, including Link To The Past. What do you think the most overrated game of all time is?

I think Halo games, God of War games, Call of Duty games are generally overrated. But the most overrated game off all time has got to be Final Fantasy VII. I do like the game and I think it has the best combat system in the series. But the story has to be one of the worst in the series and the games graphics have aged poorly. I rather be in the medieval themes of IV and V, the steampunk theme of VI, the european futuristic theme of VIII, the classic theme of IX, the south asian tropical theme of X, and the sky city theme of XII than be in the ugly cyberpunk theme of VII. Only some setpieces in VII look great, such as the Ancient City where Aerith is killed and Yuffie's town. The story has little heart (except for some scenes), unlike the other FF games, ESPECIALLY VI and X. While the killing of Aerith was stunning and well done, its not like they haven't killed playable characters before, some characters in II, alot of characters in IV including twin kids Porom and Palom, a party member in V, Shadow and Gogo in VI. Other than a couple of scenes with Aeris and Tifa, the game has no heart. The story is also heavily metaphysical and confusing, unlike VI's simpler but more effective story. Barrett is just an awful character and the translation is poor as well. Sephiroth is also an overrated villian, a cool looking one, but he is no Kefka. But when the game came out, I liked it. Like I said, the battles are well done and revolutionary, although the summons last way to long. But after I beaten it twice and played the newer ones as well as VI, I just don't connect to it as much as the others, and it is the story and characters. XIII needs to be like VI, light on the metaphysics (enough to tell the story), but heavily on the humanity.

Agreed. It's fun, but this game did NOT deserve a 10. It isn't perfect by a long shot.

GTA4 hands down. I mean the game is fun and all that, but it really doesn't deserve a 10. I think a 9.0 is a fair score.

The reason why FFVII is known as greatest is because

It's the first FF game to have some depth to it's story.

and it's the last FF game that has story that makes sense.

In other words, FFVII is the only numbered FF game to have a good story.

Wall of text crits you with blindness side effect!

I'll vote for Oblivion.

As a MMORPG player sometimes you think it'd be cool if there was a single player version of some MMORPGs, but then when you play Oblivion and it is, in effect, a single player MMORPG, you realize that it's a horrible idea.

Oblivion is one of the most boring games of all time on top of having one of the worst character development systems of all time. Great graphics don't compensate for the overall suck of the game.

Oblivion was great but it had one major weakness....the enemies level with you. So you can never go into a location that is harder than your level. They fixed this for Fallout 3. "The reason why FFVII is known as greatest is because It's the first FF game to have some depth to it's story. and it's the last FF game that has story that makes sense. In other words, FFVII is the only numbered FF game to have a good story." Have you played VI? Not only is that a deep story, it is the best one by far. No other FF or even any game has topped it. The story also makes a lot of sense, unlike VII, because they kept it simple. It was more about the characters. It also went places in depth no other game has gone before: dealing with the pain and sorrow of losing loved ones tragically and the meaning of true love. FFVI also has not only one, but two incredible female main characters, Terra and Celes, who grow and learn throughout the story. VII didn't even come close to the power of VI.

Bioshock. It isn't immersive at all, and it gets VERY boring. I would give it about a 6 because it has good graphics and atmosphere.

GTA4 was good but not a 10. It deserved about an 8 or maybe a 9. Saints Row 2 should have gotten that 10.

Bioshock or GTAIV for most ever. I bought both of these and really regret it. I own every GTA game dating back to 1, and I liked them all. I think GTAIV was ruined for me because they made the driving more difficult, you could be shot in your car, and you can go flying through the windshield. I'm not 100% sure what my problem with the game was, but that's just my guess. With Bioshock, I can't stand how you can just die. I just got bored w/ the game. Games need consequences for dying. I played the game for a few hours, and am by NO means an expert but the only way I found to kill Big Daddys was to pretty much just pump all of my ammo into them and die a couple of times.

way to spoil it... I have been meaning to get this game and now I know the most important part! I'm of course just kidding... Overrated games... tough subject, especially when the industry doesn't re-rank the games based on new content, patches or releases. I think the most overrated game is the rerelease of games... Most VC games for example pull 8's or 7.5's despite being so dated and horrible that really, if they were released today would anyone really care? Anything that requires nostologia to get a score is overrated. Now if I had to pick on specifically... that game would be Resident Evil 4. devoid of good controls and interesting story (yeah, the presidents daughter got kidnapped and they send ONE guy in... just one, without a satalite radio or anything...). Games since the early 90's had strafe, or even the ability to move and shoot... no not RE4, it was all planned to highten suspense and tension... bah, capcom got lazy AND got away with it. RE4 got a score above 5/10 simply because of the games before it, and no one is going to call something with that kind of track record mediocre trash, well except those that didn't play 1, 2, or 3. Sure you could go on about GTA IV (nothing deserves a 10, must be overrated...) but even if you gave GTA a 8.5 that is still only 1.5 off of 10... RE4 however, 9.3 when it should have got a 5 tops... over-rated by 4.3 ... almost 3 times the overrated-ness of GTA IV. RE4 even got a rerelease on the Wii and scored a 9.1... even a rerelease almost 2 years latter and no one noticed how clunky and crappy it is (aside: I find it funny that though RE5 almost does nothing different in terms of control, all of the sudden everyone is doubting them...). I think RE4 wins the BS score of all time.

I read through that Ocarina of article and IGN concludes by saying Ocarina of Time isn't overrated but a masterpiece. I think they were challenging the thought of it being overrated and wondering if it still holds up even today. And at the end they agreed that Ocarina of Time is a timeless masterpiece.

yea, I would go with GTA4 because it gets very very very boring and repetitive after playing through the story. Either that or Assassins Creed cuz AC is also repetitive.

zelda; OOT

Don't get me wrong, the game was revolutionary for it's time...but it really hasn't aged that well. Hell...I'd go as far as saying that TP surpassed it.

I've been saying Far Cry 2 recently. Before it was Halo since people say it's perfect but all it really is a good console FPS. Most people say Far Cry 2 was a great game is seems though where in my mind it was actually a pretty poor one. I played through till almost the end hoping it would change up but it just stagnated after the first hour and then continued to do the same old thing. It was easy, repetitive, boring and just felt like they had built this really nice world and forgot to put things in it that were interesting and instead filled it full of respawning people who kill you on sight no matter what.

GTA4 is absolutely the most overated game ever, for a game which fell way short of hopes by comparison to what its predecessor achieved it makes no sense for it to be so highly revered.

It has to be Halo 3 for me!

I liked the game but has nothing special. Doesn't even have a proper cover system

MP is probably quite good if you spend 100 hours getting good anough at it but it is ruined by the "younger" gamers

OOT isn't over rated. I've played it again recently & still think it's pretty good considering it's about 10 years old

the halo franchise, god of war, gears of war, goat of war, lamb of god, religion.....wait i got off track, smash bros, zelda, left 4 dead, i don't think FF7 was overrated, a little hyped, but it deserved it's accolades. it all depends on who you're talking to, everyone is different, which makes this pointless.

HALO!..... just kidding. It's kinda overrated but still really good despite what naysayers would say.

The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess is overrated as hell Jeff Gerstmann gaved it a proper score of 8.8 and then millions of fanboys flooded him with hate messages.

GTA IV, Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid 4,assassin'screed and rock band 2.

GTA IV for plain gameplay and visual problems not many but still enough to make it not worth a 10.

Final fantasy for just plain boring.

Metal Gear Solid 4, boring and bad controls(way to complicated).

Assassin'sCreed just not worth it due to flaws.

Andpersonally it also think rock band 2 because it was no where near as good as GH:WT it just had tons of dlc which was mainly songs from Rock Band 1 and some even from GH:WT or earlier Guitar Hero Games(yes i know that the old maker of GH games now makes Rock band but Activision carries the name now so they are their songs and after the greatest hits game comes out no one from the from the many that say there should be dlc for old songs for GH:WT will be able to complain.

fact GTAIV is on the top of the meters on most review sites such as metacritic.. its just wrong =[

I really don't get the deal with FFVII in terms of how much people both praise it and bash it. When it first came out I'd certainly agree that it was overrated as hell, but nowadays while I agree that it was never all that I don't understand why people hate on it so much. If anything FFVI is far more overrated now because it's always the game that people bring up when they want to bash some aspect of FFVII. I mean, Kefka is a psychotic clown, why do people always knock down Sephiroth/JENOVA for being less psychopathic when they are solid examples of villans (I personally hold Seph as my favorite villan, though I know I'll be accused of being a fanboy because he's so popular)? In any case I much prefer the way FFVII handled its story and characters then the 'have heaps of long cutscenes where characters discuss their emotions' approach that certain games take.

p.s. The Aerith death scene really got to me dispite knowing beforehand what was going to happen. If anything the fact that I knew it was inevitable is what make me care about it more then I would have otherwise.

It's easy to view a lot of older "cIassics" as overrated if you never played them when they were new. Sure you can play them for the first time now, but the experience is different as you have played recent games and have different expectations. Something that was new, innovative and fresh in a cIassic title can now be seen as cliche or done by everyone so isn't special any more. GTAIV for me was both overrated and overhyped. Like everyone else I got swept up in the mad rush at launch to play this, but it was sadly underwhelming, and attempts at realism had killed off much of what made the series so much fun to play.

dude it is an opinion... i think the controls are bad a too complicated, i just wanted a good story with a nice shooting mechanic. But i found the process leading up to actually shooting takes too long and is pointless. The way they made it is made if there was morebuttons/keys like on the pc where bringing up your gun/weapon from the side is cool but on consoles i just look for the ability to maybe thencyclethrough the weapons to get to a bare hands but they made it too much like a pc game, but that is what i think plus i just think that the point i got to ended up being to much of the same and long time to get the killing to begin which i thought was kind of missing even for a stealth game these days.

For anyone saying GTA4 and Bioshock, I agree. I think the GTA games are kinda stupid to begin with, it's not really fun unless you over-load it with cheats, in my opinion. And I was so excited for Bioshock but I found myself playing for a couple days and getting bored. I never bothered to finish the game. It has a very interesting plot line but there is so little to do, it seems. *Shrugs* But compared to other games, those two are not the greatest.

Actaully I applaud Rockstar for not putting tamks, planes, jet packs, and bought property because it doesn't work in GTA IV's more realistic world...addition through subtraction. GTA IV's protaginists, Niko, Johnny, and Luis (given for 2nd DLC) are better than GTA III set of games' protagonists. If anything San Andreas is way more overrated than GTA IV.

FFVII is overrated because its story is actually weaker than people think it is. VI is underrated because people think that sprites can't tell the story like cutscenes can (but they do and they even show emotion better than VII's characters). Kefka is by far, not only the most evil and sadistic villain in the FF series, but maybe in video gaming. He actually loves to watch people suffer, unlike almost all other video game villains. Sepiroth is more bizarre and I find his motivations weak....complex doesn't mean good. Also FFVI's main character, which is actually two main characters (though Terra may be the Dissidia representitive, Celes is the climax character and extremely impoortant)., are better than any others in the main series, especially Cloud. Also VII has less heart than any main FF game, after the first 3. VIII clearly had more heart, IX did as well, especially at the end, the two X games did as well and so did XII. VI has the most heart of them all. The only heart in VII are Tifa and Aeris (mainly her). By killing Aeris, they did have an incredible memorable moment, but the game lost its heart as well.

FFVII had less heart?

the ****??????????????????????????????????????????

Sakaguchi made FFVII as tribute to his dead mother. FFVII had MOST heart out of all FF games.

and you call Sephiroth bizzare? And Kefka is NOT? At least Sephiroth has very good reasonings behind his actions.

The overall story of VII had much less heart than any other FF game, even if it is a tribute to the creater's mother. Not to say it doesn't have parts with heart, it just has the least in the series. You think the love between Rinoa and Squall in VIII, IX's ending, Yuna's character in X, and FFVI overall have less heart than VII? VI has more heart than any other game in the series, with the journey's of the main heroines, Terra and Celes being a major reason why. Terra's search for love was the main focus of her character. And she finds it in a motherly role (caring for oprhans whose parents were murdered by Kefka), uncliched for a videogame. And through love, she fights for hope. Celes is a tragic character, who is hopeless and broken when Locke rescues her. She finds hope through her love for Locke, also potrayed in an uncliched manner (Celes also shows her love for Terra at the end of the game as well).. The Solitary Island, Celes's attempted suicide, may be the most heart wrenching scene ever in the Final Fantasy series. The secondary characters show the heart too. Locke, Cyan, and Setzer had to deal with tragic losses of loved ones, either murdered cruelly or through accidents. Even Shadow had to deal with a loss of a companion. Even Gau, who I thought was underdeveloped, had heart in his story. Even when his father rejected him, he found solace and comfort knowing he had a father. A complex villiain, like Sephiroth, doesn't mean he is a good villain. Many great villains have no good reasons behind their actions except that they love to hurt people. Anton Chigurh from the movie, No Country For Old Men, is such a villain. Same thing with the Judge from the book Blood Meridian (the author wrote No Country For Old Men as well). These are effective villains and what makes them scary is the thought that they are just random and end innocent life for no good reason except that they enjoy it. Kefka is such a villain.

GTA4 GOT A 10!?........................Being Serious!? GTA4 was crap...the most overated game ever! I completed the damn thing in two days, how can you call a game a 10 when it takes 2 days to complete it, it lacked everything from San Andreas...all it had was graphics and half decent physics thats it. Where the * is San Andreas 2! You can't put less in a sequel and it be better then the rest! GTA4 official rating 7.5 and thats because I am in a good mood! Ocarina of Time overrated!? are you being serious? the game is still one of the best games in the world it was top for more then any other game has been and for those that didn't know Majora's Mask is actually supposed to be an expansion to Zelda OoT so that just makes it even better...I don't know whats happened to IGN the past 3yrs but seriously the people who work for it are the most amatuer gamers to ever rate games...ever! I will personally visit there site and * there * heads to a * beyond a shadow of a *, IGN are a bunch of *! As for FF series the most overrated FF is without question FF7, it was good but the way fans talk about it...as if no other RPG has ever existed...FF7 good game but way overrated. FF10 was little overrated but still one of the best FFs of all.

Ocarina of Time is slightly overrated. It is one of my favorite games of all time, but many people do argue (and they have an argument) that Link To The Past was the best Zelda game. Both are considered the greatest games of all time. GTA IV is a different style than the GTA III games. Here less is more...I think not having a tank and jets make the game better because it was supposed to be more realistic than the other games. I do find the lack of bicycles odd. The gunbattles are way better in GTA IV.

I generally don't compare 2D and 3D games because 2D games can't really be beat can they? I mean its been what 25 years and Pac man and space invaders still rule half the world. And well Link to the past is on handheld not console and I don't compare handheld to console either. Best 2D Zelda Link to the past! Best 3D Zelda Ocarina of Time! Its that simple! for Nintendo all there actual games were at their very best when they were on N64, the sequels on gamecube and Wii are great but not as great. I know about GTA4, Rockstar released it with the bare minium hoping to upgrade it with the damn downloads...what they should have done was take there finger out and actually make a bloody full game...you know like they did in the old days when games were actually games and didn't try to be like some fake * films, do you honestly believe the gun battles were better in GTA4? whenever you stood near a wall Niko would hold his gun up, that was so annoying...in the middle of shooting something and he stops firing...idiot! You see a big problem I feel with todays games is they always lack something GTA4 lacked just about everything except graphics and physics, and they alone don't make a great game...they can sometimes, but not when making a GTA especially after San Andreas!. GTA5 had best be San Andreas style, games should be getting better putting more onto them GTA4 did the complete opposite and it gets a 10/10....IGN is on crack! they are a bunch of fan boy, bum boys that can't get their lips away from Rockstars * hole for at least two minutes to actually play and rightfully judge GTA4 for what it truly is. 7.0/10 I took five points off because you reminded me that they didn't have tanks or jets! I don't want to play a damn film, I want a game...a good game that lasts, but well there are very few of those around and they decrease year after year...the last one I played I think was Oblivion...game like that only comes around once every 2 years and as a hardcore I can not live with 1 game every 2 years...my god I don't think I could contain the stress of actually looking at people and talking to them...my god! Lol.

Yeh thats true enough doomsoth, it all depends on what you were looking for in a game, in GTA4s case I was actually looking for you know...a game like San Andreas and I got bumpt with a 2 day to complete game that has nothing intresting in it at all and has the worst ending of a GTA game ever...even the 2D GTAs had better endings. I mean no matter what you do you lose...whats the point of that? crime doesn't pay?...how can GTA the best crime based game use a crap theme of a story like that, I might as well not have played the damn thing...and what games need today is to stop acting like they are films and actually be games you know. And for gods sake have some longetivity...my god! (2days to complete and its getting a 10/10...IGN are * I hope that site dies!)
