overwhelm

/ˌəʊvəˈwɛlm/

verb (transitive)

1.to overpower the thoughts, emotions, or senses of

2.to overcome with irresistible force

3.to overcome, as with a profusion or concentration of something

Most games are just average when you play them. But sometimes some games are such powerful experience that they push all your sense to their limit.

For me it has to be Metal Gear Solid 4. It's just absolutely breath taking and there are so much lore to that game you don't even know. The atmosphere of war will give you PTSD.

Final Fantasy 3D games and 6. So much lore also and sensory overload. I love how everything looks in those games. Right down to the smallest polygon. Including 8.

Killzone 2- Unlike its predecessor it dials everything up to 50. Everything has changed. The graphics have so much post processing and lighting effects. The enemies get stronger and stronger.

Starcraft- Starcraft because you have to look out for all of your colonies.

Mortal Kombat 2- Talk about information overload. This game has more violence and finishers than hell I don't even know.

What's a game that overwhelmed you?

Right now that's Dragon Age: Inquisition. After playing through the first two games, I was surprised to see just how much the lore and world expanded. It's a lot to take in, but I'm gonna go ahead and call it my new favorite RPG. Not favorite game, but in my top 10 replacing Origins

FF9, the right tone for the type of story I like and I find the game play fun and I still replay it. In fact it is the game I replay the most.

I did not Dragon Age: Inquisition that much. I found it felt like the downgrade some much of the RPG elements that is almost go to the leave of a beat-em-up game.

@wiouds: I thought it was a better system than Origins. Micromanaging stats isn't ideal anymore. The equipment-based system is much more manageable while at the same time giving more life to the characters in and out of combat. The stats are still there, but they're not as obvious, and I prefer it that way as it allows you to play your way instead of playing around your stats like in Origins.

Learning curve in Dark Souls especially Anor Londo.

But once you've gotten used to how Dark Souls trolls you then all will be fine.

Don't underestimate Dark Souls or it will make you look like the biggest idiot ever like crafting your 2nd Cursed Artorias Sword in NG+. *sigh*

Stupidest thing I've ever done.

Dark Souls definitely overwhelmed me the first 30 hours.

Not sure what you mean by overwhelming, but if you take my definition of it, play Endless Space with no tutorial. Figure that one out.

EVE can be quite overwhelming until you get used to the UI (which is quite possibly one of the best UIs ever created).

Great thread. Obvious choices would be GTA 3 - 5. Pick any. But aside from that or any types of those games for that matter...

Big Mother Truckers. Ha. Kidding. Gears of War 3. Powerful story, never a dull moment, beautiful presentation from graphics, to sounds, to acting, and to the overall ambiance it created. Somewhat felt immersed in the game.

To each their own, but I thought MGS4 was garbage.

Emotionally speaking, Shadow of the Colossus, Odin Sphere and Nier have been the only "overwhelming" games I've ever played.

In terms of complexity, most strategy games overwhelm me to the point of giving up.

street fighter 2: there are no words to express how I felt about this game the first time I played it. I was 11 years old and played it at Nathans. I picked e Honda and spammed the hundred hand slap to beat everyone at the arcade. Once it hit my local arcade I actually learned how to properly play the game and have been playing it ever since. There was just so much more to that game than any game at the time and the better you got at it, the more you there was to learn I can think of lots of amazing games but none have overwhelmed me the way street fighter has.

I'd have to say Fallout 3 (my favourite game). That first time you came out of the vault and stepped into the vast wasteland, approaching your first town - Megaton (seeing a ghoul for the first time thinking what the hell that thing was). This game was just simply amazing, I did enjoy New Vegas too but it didn't have the same vibe as number 3 in my opinion.

Dragon Age: Inquisition. I don't even like the game but when you manage to play for 5-6 hours before even starting the first mission you know it's a bit excessive

I'd have to say Fallout: New Vegas and Skyrim simply because of the sheer size of their worlds and all of the stuff there is to. In that sense, I find these games overwhelming

To me a RPG need player control character growth which can be broken up into player control stats growth, player control gear growth and player control ability. That is how you affect that character role in the game play.

I find the lack of stats control does cause many RPG to become more limited and may the character more generic. Without it the core character is the same in each play through. I never look at gear when I talk about stats.

I found the gear system to be flat and that not good as the core why to affect your character. I have gone through large portion of the game without changing my gear. It became a boring afterthought that I did little to nothing to manage, and something I just skip often for how pointless it felt.

Then, comes the abilities growth. Saving the worse for last. They tree system suck so much and this is the worse use of a tree I ever seen. There is nothing good about it. It suck when you spend more points just dumping the one choose you get from leveling instead of making a choose that matter.

They could have calling DA:I a beat-em-up with an interactive story and not add in the worse parts to the games.

Fallout 3, New Vegas, Skyrim, and Dragon's Dogma. The sheer amount of exploration and intricate looting systems are pretty awesome.

Bioshock 1 changed my initial outlook on FPS games. Prior to experiencing that, I believed all FPS games to be crap COD remakes.

The first game to really blow my mind was Metal Gear Solid 1. That game really solidified my appreciation for a well detailed and thought out game.

Skyrim: The size of the map and number of quests damn near melts my brain.

Dark Souls 2: My first mistake was playing offline (to avoid invaders) but got my ass handed to me by the Last Giant probably 20-30 times. Playing online is a must for me.

Far Cry 4: Compared to Far Cry 3, this game almost has too many things to do. It's actually stressful.

Far Cry 2: Driving, driving, and more driving. Also, the bullet sponge enemies are annoying.

Killzone 2: Enemies are either bullet sponges or are hard to kill. The sluggish aiming doesn't help. Luckily Killzone 3's aiming is better IMO.

GTA 5: Large map; many side quests

Skyrim, I guess. So much stuff you can do and so many places to see. I only played a little bit of the game and couldn't get into it because I like RPGs to have a clear story and set path, but that's just my personal preference.

Hey, I liked it, until the end. Had the game just consisted of Act's 1-4, and not tried to tie up all the loose ends throughout, it would have been a great game. I wish they would have expanded on the gameplay, and spent less time with the over-exposition of the cutscenes.

Trust me, a lot of people liked MGS4 when it came out. Now people are sort of pessimistic about the whole game for some reason.

I think its the worst game in the series, but it would be crazy to call it a bad game.

Also been popping in FzeroX. That game limits the amount of error you can make.

First time playing DotA, compared to the other WarCraft III mods. Many items/recipes to choose from, lose gold from dying, many heroes with many variety of skills. It was difficult to adjust to and punishes you for making mistakes.

FF 7 as a child was kind of like this. Well 7, 8, 9, 10 all kind of had that feeling. But in the last few years I'd say The last of us is the only one to really make me sit back and go damn! Nothing has done it since that, story, character, world, writing no game has done it as good as the last of us. Though I still need to get into GTA 5 when it's out on pc.

Nope..... its 10 hours of gameplay..... the other 20 hours is killing the exact same enemies over and over again just because you died...... It can take longer if you plan on grinding..... which is kinda a Necessity when using with Great Swords of Artorias...... Which it turns out is a waste of time....... by the time you finally nail down 50 In all its Bonus Parameters you'l be in NG+++......

My first play through was 70 hours long...... however now I can do the entire game (excluding DLC) in less Twenty.......

Dark Souls so called difficulty is just padding and its the laziest kind of Padding......

Battlefield 1942 when it first came out. I had just resumed LAN MP after getting burned out from GLQuake/Quake 2 a few years earlier. I was simply awestruck. The gaming areas were big with land, air, and sea components. Then the Desert Combat mod (modern warfare) took it over the top.

I had to get used to Battlefield 1942's style of play which was very different from the Quake games. It was quite a welcome addition back then.

The most recent game to blow my mind was Brothers a Tale Of Two Sons, It was one of the saddest games I have played and a have been gaming for over 20 years. No words are spoken the emotion comes from what's happening on the screen and the sounds and music you hear.

@Lulu_Lulu: I think most people misunderstand Dark Souls' difficulty. It's not an insane difficulty but rather it does something few games do.

It punishes your mistakes with absolutely ZERO mercy. It creates a learning curve (how the world of Dark Souls works) that grows extremely steep especially when you hit Anor Londo and this becomes a coercion tool to force you into preparing yourself with the right stats and to make sure you upgrade your weapons before entering the unknown. After you complete the game and overcome the learning curve and stand on top of it, does not mean Dark Souls is now easier for you personally. It was never hard....... It just didn't hold your hand and you had to figure out your own ways to beat the Random Number Generator even if it means dying to a boss 20 times until you finally find a pattern you can exploit. I really liked this game a lot.... I go back to it every now and then.

@acp_45:

what learning curve ? You don't learn anything Dark Souls you just memorize a bunch of stuff.... that hardly constitute learning....... and Dark Souls is not the only game that doesn't hold your hand..... therea no shortage of games that are nothing but an exercise in Trial and Error...... what makes Dark Souls different is it wastes your time in the Process by Eliminating most of your progression...... now you have to retrace your steps back to where you died 50 times over just find out the boss is way beyond your stats....... yeah.... no hand holding is definitely a negative under those circumstances...... its certainly nothing to brag about........

Atleast you were honest about the two things that bothered me the most..... the stats..... and the exploits...... although you should probably know that a game is broken if you can kill a boss before you even traverse the white light.
