In my opinion it has to be FFIX, I LOVED that game and couldn't get enough of it,loved vivi, steiner, zidane EVERYONE! I always thought it was the best of them all (well, maybe matched by FFX.) What do you think?

Final Fantasy XII. Reviews for it were great, but a lot of people didn't like the changes. It's probably my favorite one so far.
Chrono Cross!
Oh, wait, final fantasy games only? Then Final Fantasy 8
The game was better than 7 in almost every concievable way, yet gets maybe 10% the recognition.
IX was a brilliant game, and that is my pick. Its too bad that had the distinction of following VII and VIII.
Why isn't anyone saying IX was too easy? I breezed through the first 2 discs in no time (even though I've never beat the game). I don't think any of them are unappreciated. They are all somewhat popular (besides 1 it seems).
what about FFIV guys? I'm soon getting it to the PS1, would like some opinions :D (talking about the Final Fantasy chronicles that includes ports of the SNES FFIV and Chrono trigger, not the newer DS version)

I don't think so. Before AC, the two were practically at heads with each other in discussions. Wherein the common debate is Plot versus Graphics.
Definitely FF8. That game gets a lot of hate, but it did many things differently than most RPGs at the time (which is probably why it got all the hate it did). Not all of its ideas were perfect, but I appreciate that they tried.
I, for one, liked the "less is more" approach to minigames. Triple Triad was good enough to be a standalone game, before it got butchered in FF9.
probably FF9, I believe it doesnt get as much attention asthe other FF games, and its a shame because its an amazing game
Was gonna go with IX, but forgot the hate VIII got so I am going with that one.
IX was very good, but it moreso got overlooked more than anything else. A lot of people were a bit timid to get it, and the hype train for PS2 was in full force at the time. VIII got a lot of unnecessary hate, especially as the story was more cohesive than in some of the other titles, the battle system was (a bit) more active, and the draw and weapon/armor systems were done in a unique way. VIII is actually my favorite of the PS1 titles, but it was largely underappreciated at the time.
Final Fantasy IV, V and IX. You could also include VI because the 2d ones were forgotten by the hordes of FFVII fans. IX is underappreciated because it's not as popular outside of the internet as VII, VIII and X. Also Gamespot underrated the game by giving it an 8.5 when it deserved an AAA score.
FF IV was in no way ever underappreciated, people are always praising it as possible the best title the series ever had. IX was probably the MOST underappreciated, with VIII very close behind. V wasn't underappreciated just because it isn't talked about much, it just truly wasn't nearly as great as the others, not bad, just not on par. FF VI is in no way underappreciated as well, it's up there with IV VII and X, always talked about, always mentioned as possibly the best title. XII was a great game, truly great, but the story was so lacking it's unbelievable. Maybe half the main characters had a sense of a deep personality, the rest were stereotypes and bland. The overall story lacked horribly and the conclusion of it all left you feeling empt, mostly because the main bad guy had little character development and there was no sense of fulfillment in defeating him. As far as the main question goes though, either VIII or IX, both great, both not given nearly enough credit.

I could breeze through them as well, but I think the great thing about FF games is that you can take your time if you want and really explore the game.

My favorite part of 8 was the card game. It was pretty awesome. I found 8 to be the least enjoyable and the only FF game that once I started I couldn't bring myself to finish. Maybe I need to give it another try because I do remeber some of the parts with great liking. But the summons being too strong and draw system for magic irked me every time. But after seeing distant worlds, and the the music that went with it I feel the need to give it another try. haha
FF4, that game was awesome. Cecil was bad ass, wish he didnt go "holy". the Ninja was a bad ass companion too hahaIronSalamander
For being the only FF who got a DS remake i highly doubt its underappreciated.
Anyway my vote goes to FFV.
FFIX for sure. Although III was pretty neglected and unknown for a long time. I can't believe Square took so long to share it with the rest of the world.

Except for the fact that FFIII got a remake first, I agree, it's definitely a more popular title. Especially since it got a sequel too.
Public Service Announcement: IX is currently the most popular Final Fantasy. It's well appreciated.
Btw, it's VIII thats underappreciated.

Other way round.
8 was overrated, people were still getting over the "OH WOW A 3D FINAL FANTASY!" stage even though it wasn't that great (for a final fantasy obviously). Then it was time for 9's lovely goblet of praise and final fantasy 8 had already necked the entire bottle.

Maybe a long time ago. But not anymore. IX is currently the most popular fantasy among fans. Go on any message board and this instantly becomes clear.
VIII is the most hated Final Fantasy. People consistently mark it as the worst in the series.
