So, I was pulled into a Goodwill store the other day. Saw SNES cartridges laying on the VHS tape shelf. One was Xmen vs. Spiderman Arcade Game, and the other wrestlemania. Thought to myself: Wouldn't it be nice if I had a SNES....wish they had the system....and as I was walking out, I saw their "cart" where they bring out new stuff to be put on the shelves. Low and behold, a sad and neglected SNES with 2 controllers, one TV cable, 1 power cable(thing is a brick, man), and 1 lonely game of Super Mario Cart stuck in the cartidge slot was sitting on the top of the cart. Next to it, a copy of F-Zero. I looked over the console and it looked like it was in excellent condition. Then I saw the price. Some idiot had crudely written "$8" on it. So I walked out of there with everything for $10.(games are 1 buck each) Left the other two games on the VHS shelf. I was happy. Brought it home, hooked it up, and it works. The Snes talked to me, said it was very sad and lonely. Said it had been sitting in a box for a long time and that some old wicked woman had driven it to that strange store that smelled of mothballs. Said it didn't like the 12 inch TVs, the broken toys, the dirty stuffed animals, and the printers that were out of ink that it had to sit next to. Said it never wanted to be put away again. Said it wanted to be my friend, as it had been for some little boy, 20 years ago. Said that me and it would get along, since we were the same age. So far, I love my new friend, and I'll never turn my back on it. 3 questions. 1: Did I get a good deal? 2: Where should I get games for it(not amazon or Ebay)? 3: Which games are essential to play?

1. Awesome deal there.

2. best place, is fleamarkets, goodwill like stores or pawn shops. You're often be able to get stuff pretty cheap. I've gottten all of mine at fleamarkets.

3. Nintendo developed games tend to always be high on the suggestion list, but I would also look into the ones made by Capcom. They made a lot of excellent titles for the Snes console.

Remember to always clean your carts before you use them. It'll prolong the life of your console. :)

to answer #3 is hard, it'd be easier to list off bad snes games

here is syd lexia's top 100, i'd pretty much agree with it

Good job. A Super Nintendo for $8 is a steal.

If there's just 1 game you need to play, it's Chrono Trigger. Others that you shouldn't miss are the Mortal Kombat series, the Donkey Kong Countries, Killer Instinct, Street Fighter II and the mario games.

Yeah, those games are some of the best! Zelda: A Link to the Past is one of my favorite games. Also, FF3 on the SNES (FF6) is the best jRPG ever made.. And Gradius 3 is great, if you like games like that...

Wow, thanks for all the positive comments and links, guys! There's A LOT to dig into here. Okay, hope y'all don't mind some more questions. For Chrono Trigger, I'm thinking I'll just get it for my DS, since looking on Ebay, all I can see are 30 dollars + for a used game and the new DS copy is only 35. Same things for final fantasy 3, and 4. I have all variations of Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter, some on the computer, and some on my old Genesis. But killer instinct I don't have a good version of, so I'm thinking about that. I wanted to ask how accessible is it without using an arcade stick? Like some moves in Street Fighter are impossible to do consistenly without a stick, and I'm wondering if Killer Instinct is the same way. The Mario games I'm down for, also Donkey Kong Country, Metroid, TLoZ, Pilot Wings, and Star Fox.(loved his N64 title, so its a no brainer). Also want to ask about this one RPG that ISN'T available for a current gen handheld....Earthbound. Anybody here know which is best to get(since they range from 60-100): Earthbound, Mother, 1, 2, or 3? Which is THE one to get. And finally, are they worth the price they command on Ebay? I hear so much hype surrounding them, but I'm just not sure if they're worth it.

FF3 on the DS and SNES are different. FF3 on the SNES is actually FF6. Trust me, FF3 on the SNES is a must have... And Earthbound was good as well, but it's no FF6. I would still recommend buying it!

I would almost say that SNES titles rival Playstation 2 in terms of greatness, historic signifigance, and fun factor. God Bless you for saving the little guy and hope it works out for you. If you can find Flea Markets around there is usually someone selling a crap load of games that their son used to own. I came across one ladies table and she had about 50 SNES games (alot of great ones..Zelda, Super Metroid, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy games), 75-100 NES games, 40-50 PS2 games. Her son must have been pretty spoiled or had one hell of a part time job to accumulate that many games back in the day.

Found super mario world and FFII today at a thrift store for 99c each. Comes with a plain plastic case, a dust cover, AND original instruction booklets. FF even has the little guide that tells you about the different cities. Another question, if FF3 for SNES is actually 6, then what is FF 2?

FF2 on the SNES is actually FF4. It's old school, but old school at it's best. You should pick up EarthBound, AKA Mother 2. EarthBound's a truly unique game, kind of an experience in itself, but it's one of my top favorites ever. Also check out Yoshi's Island (one of the best and most creative platformers to this date, and the graphics are still beautiful).

The SNES is an RPG beast. I think you already mentioned Chrono Trigger, but also look at FF3 (AKA FF6), Secret of Mana, and Mario RPG. If you want some action games, check out Super Castlevania 4, Contra 3, Actraiser (1, NOT 2), and Super Mario All-Stars.

So Final Fantasy 2 on Snes=Final Fantasy 4 on DS? Is that right? But DS has better graphics.

That's right. The DS version is a remake. The story and basic gameplay remains intact, but they completely redid the graphics, re-arranged the music, and added voiceovers. It's an improved version, but very different.
