(If you want to skip past my intro and just get to my idea start reading from where it says MY IDEA)
While going over many of my old Nintendo64 games, I couldn't help but be hit by a wave on nostalgia when looking at my Pokémon Snap and Pokémon Stadium boxes. I remember all the time I spent either going through the courses in Pokémon Snap on my own to get the best pictures, or the countless hours my friends and I spent either battling each other or playing the simple minigames in Pokémon Stadium. And I can't help but feel a little disappointed that there's nothing that really matches up to that today.

My friend said it's because nothing you played when you were a kid will ever match up to the feeling you had the first time you played. To quote him better 'Pokémon Black and White are still very good games, but they'll never be as good as Pokémon Blue and Red'. And he was right. The reason the newer reiteration, Pokémon Battle Revolution, of Pokémon Stadium felt bland and average is because it's lost the dusty shine the original had. Here we are 3 generations later (Pokémon Battle Revolution is set in Diamond and Pearl so at that stage it's 3 generations later) and we're still standing opposite each other and just attacking. Then it hit me:

MY IDEA
I'm going to use the Wii for explanation purposes as it's just what I've been working with so far. I also put a lot of thought into this so please give it a read.

1. Pokémon can move. And when I say move, I don't mean a sprite animation, I mean you can charge towards your opponent, strafe, dodge, jump, pretty much everything you see in the show. Moving is done with the analogue stick on the Nunchuck. Your target will auto lock once they're within a certain view. To charge would be a quick double tap up with the analogue stick. To jump left or right, a quick double tap either way. To jump press C. Pokémon that can fly can hold down the jump button to gain further height and stay there. Pokémon in water can likewise hold the C button to dive under water.

2. Pokémon have more than 4 attacks and an improved combat system. Pokémon can have up to 6-8 moves (haven't quite decided. I'm going to work with 8 ) that they would learn normally. However, in order to avoid everyone just picking all the most powerful attacks, moves now have ranks. You can have 3 low rank moves, 3 mid rank moves and 2 high rank moves. The more powerful the attack, the more you have to do to pull it off. Low rank moves would be A, A-B, A-B-A. Mid rank moves would be A-A, B-B-A, A-B-Z-A. High rank moves would require you to shake the Wiimote to charge up an attack while holding down a combination of A+Z or B+Z. While charging an attack you can't move. There is also a set period of time between how often you can use high rank moves.
Moves can be changed around outside of battle so you can customise your Pokémon to your preferred way of fighting. Moves taught by TMs would have to be bought at some sort of store.
Moves can also be cancelled out. If a low rank move hits another low rank move, nothing happens. However if a low rank move hits a mid rank move, the mid rank move wins out and beat's it. I high rank move can be stopped if the opponent is hit while they are charging their attack, but can only be blocked by another high rank attack if fired at the same time (eg. Fireblast and Thunder hit at the same time)

3. Arenas actually make a difference in battles. In the show there have been so many instances where a particular arena type has been key in the victory or lose. Things like hiding under water, dodging behind rocks, sliding on ice. All of these will have effects in battle, for example when playing in an ice arena your Pokémon will slide after moving, and also things such as effecting elemental type eg. a Pokémon in water will take more damage from electric moves.

4. You can assign items to yourself in battle. Prior to going into battle, players can pick 3 items to take in before a fight, such as potions, full restores, antidote ect. These are assigned to the left, up, and right key on the D-Pad so they can be activated with a quick tap. In order to reduce spamming, a player may only take in a limited amount of a set item.

5. Multi-fights are still an option. When going into a 2-on-2 or 3-on-3 battle, your other Pokémon will be controlled by the computer, and their battle stance can be changed. You can choose to have each Pokémon target an opponent it has a better chance of beating, or you can tell them to all gang up on the opponent you're targeting, or a general 'go nuts' kind of mode where they just attack any opponent. This is cycled through by tapping the down button on the D-Pad. When you or one of your opponents Pokémon is knocked out, the battle will pause and bring up a menu where either you or your opponent select the next Pokémon they are sending out so that the player is aware of a change in the battle.

6. MINIGAMES! When I think of some good ones I'll let you know.

So yeh that's my game idea. What do you guys think? Too complicated? Would you play it?

I like the idea of the combat system. I'd try it if you can play it with a controller as opposed to a wii remote or something.

Yeah I'd prefer it on a controller too. It's just because Nintendo own the rights to Pokemon that I made it on the Wii.

So, you want to take your average semi-tactical action game and slap pokémon faces on it? Well, each to their own.
