So, between the PS1 and N64, which was the best system for platformers?

Exclusives

Nintendo 64:

Super Mario 64

Yoshi's Story

Banjo Kazooie and Tooie (XBLA releases do not count here)

Donkey Kong 64

Conker's Bad Fur Day

Mischief Makers

Rocket: Robot on Wheels

Sony PlayStation:

Crash Bandicoot series

Spyro the Dragon series

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (the Wii release doesn't count here)

Lomax

Tomba! series

Multiplatform:

Rayman (PlayStation, Jaguar, Saturn, and PC)

Rayman 2 (PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast and PC. PlayStation 2 had an "added on" version of the game as well)

Toy Story 2 (PlayStation, Nintendo 64, and PC)

Pandemonium! (PlayStation, Saturn and PC)

Pandemonium! 2 (PlayStation and PC)

Gex series (PlayStation, Nintendo 64)

Oddworld series (PlayStation and PC)

Mega Man X3 (SNES, PlayStation, Saturn, and PC in Japan)

Mega Man X4 (PlayStation, PC, Saturn)

Mega Man X5 (PlayStation and PC)

Mega Man X6 (PlayStation and PC in South Korea)

Let me know if I'm missing anything, but still, what console did you think was the best for platformers between these two systems?

This is a tough one, but I think with Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64, Banjo, and Yoshi's Story the N64 takes the cake.

Rayman is one of my favorite playformers of all time, but DK64 and SM64 are two of my favorites.

The PS1 has other strengths though that the N64 can't touch.

I really dislike PS1's famous platformers like Crash and Spyro. Klonoa is awesome though. The PS1 version of Toy Story 2 is better than the N64 version imo. For platformers, I'd say N64 wins (although I don't really like the platformers on either of the consoles)

well Im not a big fan of 3D platformers in general , but if I had to choose, probably N64 since it has Conker, that alone makes it a winner in my book

PS1 was the better system. You have... - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus - Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee - Tomba! - Tomba! 2 - SkullMonkeys - Mega Man X games. - Ape Escape

I'd have to go with the 64 for Banjo and DK64. Although, the PS1 was no slouch either in this department.

n64 of course! Mario64 FTW! PS1 games almost always had way better music (since it had a lot more storage space on discs). The ps1 never really did 3D platformers very well, but Crash Bandicoot was still pretty good.

Switch the wording to 'best RPG' and the PS1 could hold its own with any system out there.

I went w/ N64. Honestly, I really only just started to like 3D platformers and never played any on PS1 so probably I shouldn't have voted.

You said the PS1 was no slouch in this department; almost every successful system has a few games from every genre that are good.

The N64 has nothing compared to the PS1 as far as RPG's go. I guess I was just saying that PS1 isn't really a slouch in any department which can't be said for most systems.

For platformers, the N64 obviously had more games. So N64 wins this one. But PS1 had more RPGs, more fighting games, and more action games. And personally, I'd say Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on PS1 & Saturn is a better than any platformers on N64, if we're comparing individual games.

Because it's N64 vs PS1, and a Wii isn't any of those.

That, and I didn't even add the Wii version of Klonoa (or XBLA versions of Banjo) because they aren't Legacy Systems... yet.

Are you kidding?! Some of the hardest platforming elements in a game come from the Castlevania series. A platformer is not defined by lovable characters an collecting quests, it's defined by PLATFORMING, running and jumping from platform to platform. I think a good way to cIassify this, would be action-platformer, in the same way there are action-RPGs. Action-RPGS are still RPGs.

Probably the psx. Most of the games people are calling 3D platformers for the N64 are more adventure-type games.

I try not to get into the 'what genre is x game' discussions because genres have always overlapped. When I think platformers I don't think of Castlevania, that's all.

I had both and I liked the N64 a lot more than the PS1. I love Ape Escape and Crash Bandicoot, but I enjoyed Banjo Kazooie and Mario 64 a lot more.

My biggest gripe with N64 though, was the controller. It's such an awkward design. What were they thinking when they made it? Sony nailed it with the dual analog controller.

Not big on Spyro myself. But I am on Crash Bandicoot. And I could tell you exactly why: Well designed-levels, and great (true) platforming-based gameplay. The controls were nice, tight, and responsive; as they should be in a good platformer. And the game became challenging in later levels. A lot of N64 "platformers" weren't about platforming at all, but rather item collection, which is great for some people but it's not my cup of tea.

This is a bit hard for me. PS1 has Castlevania, Crash, Klonoa, Mega Man/X, and Spyro. N64 has Banjo, Conker, Donkey Kong, Goemon, and Mario. Overall I have to go with with N64.

I'll have to say Playstation since I enjoyed quite a few platformers for the system like-

  • Crash Bandicoot 2 and 3
  • Spyro the Dragon
  • Ape Escape
  • Croc Legend of Gobbos (Multi-platform)
  • Rayman 2 (Multi-platform)

The Nintendo 64 had better platformers. The Playstation is geared towards RPGs. I did like Crash, Spyro, and Klonoa a lot better than the N64's games though.

Definitely N64. I can't think of any PS1 platformer I played to death besides the Crash Bandicoot series. But I did play Mario 64, DK64, and Goemon 64 to death. Also, N64 games seem to have aged way better than PS1 games for some reason. PS1 games look horrendous on my TV, while the N64 games look beautiful.

Not really, the playstation has a lot of good platformers moreso in 2d than 3d though.

While the N64 only has like four RPGs, only two of which were well received.

I never understood Spyro--I actually think it is THE most overrated game of that gen. I felt it was solely made to compete with Mario64. Crash, on the other hand, is one of the defining games of that generation. I still play that thing on my psp. Naughty Dog definitely mated Sonic w/Mario, but he certainly came out great.

*I thought Banjo was a little overrated as well...and DK stunk imo because of performance.

Nintendo 64 is the better system for platformers, That is one of the genres that help save this system. Playstation has been clearly bested here when it comes to platformers.

There's a lot of nostalgia running amuck in threads like this. I want to go with PS1 mainly due to Klonoa, but I have yet to beat any of the N64 platformers...I've partially completed DK64, Mario 64, Conker and Banjo but I haven't been able to stick it out to the end of any. Maybe some day...
