Wow how the times have changed - I remember being a kid in the early 90s lusting after a Neo Geo while playing my Sega Genesis thinking at $600 for the console, and a couple hundred per game, nobody but the wealthy would ever have a chance to play the thing.

Now SNK is releasing a handheld running Linux for $130 with its top 20 Neo Geo titles preinstalled. Here's the full specs:

  • Linux OS
  • 480 x 272 resolution
  • 128MB DDR2 RAM
  • SD card support (1GB to 8GB)
  • Six-hour battery life

Anyone considering one of these for nostalgia's sake?

I actually own a Neo Geo Pocket, so it'd be kind of pointless for me. This is still really cool, but at this point in time it's pretty expensive for how dated everything on it is.

Odd screen resolution. Are there l/r buttons? It must be built like a tank at $130.

I dunno. Lots of similar titles but the NGPC versions are way different.

This thing is cool in that it kind of seems like you could use it as a Dingoo or something as well since it runs Linux. It looks like it does have shoulder buttons so it would work well for this purpose. There is also a more expensive version that can plug into a TV and comes w/ an oldschool Neo Geo controller you can use. That's pretty sweet but too expensive for my blood.

You think it has a decent processor? I wonder how the directional pad feels. I doubt any retail shops will have this on display either, and at the same time I bet it will sell out very quickly. There's likely a short supply.

I am hoping the little d-pad/fake analog stick is like the weird clicky stick on an NGPC, which is what it looks like. Couldn't say for sure though. I also haven't seen anywhere that actually says it has shoulder buttons, just looks like it has them in the pictures. I think an original Neo Geo only has four buttons but I could be wrong as I've never set eyes on one of those in my whole life. 1 GHz processor and 128 MB ram which is more juice than a lot of Linux-based handhelds.

That seems very underpowered to me, or does Linux factor into that somehow? Also... What I like about it, and this is an assumption, is that it is SNK. I'm assuming that this being the case, and being sold at $130, that the device will be very rugged. What I don't care for is the screen resolution. It seems awfully low, or is that the native neogeo res? Do we know what type of screen it is? I sort of want one because it looks like an actual handheld--very pocketable. The wiiu is what is stopping a sure bet purchase. Edit: I should add that the reason I think it will be available in limited quantities is because it is pricey and a niche device--also why I think it will be of a good build quality.

Well, this thing is sort of a Linux device that runs an emulator that runs the Neo Geo games so it's got enough juice for that sort of thing... I am making a pretty big assumption that you will be able to ultimately use the thing like a Dingoo or GP2X though.

Edit: the article I got the tech specs form links to this Japanese article that looks like it's been corrected to say it has 256 MB RAM.

It doesn't look like any official NeoGeo site mentions this though.

I really want one, although it costs much more than I'm willing to pay for it.

You guys could just get the SNK Arcade Collection for PS2. It would be much cheaper. Most of the games pre-programmed onto this handheld Neo-Geo are basically the same games. And it's not gonna be able to play the actual MVS or AES cartridges or anything. You could also pick up the Metal Slug Anthology, Samurai Shodown Anthology, and King of Fighters Collection and would probably end up with a much broader Neo Geo library than what comes pre-packed on that handheld.

$130 is far too much.

its 199,99 on gamestop.com lol with wii u around the corner i dont see this thing doing that good it will probably be for those mean parents who give their children bad christmas gifts in comparision , ,

also ya , if there was a real neo geo next gen then ya but for a system like an atari flashback i dont think 130 is a smart price
