Aside from the following... which games did you enjoy? I'm looking personally for more obscure games. I rented a lot way back when, but I guess I'm getting old and can't remember. Like today I saw Little Nemo the Dreamcatcher and I had this huge sense of deja vu. So my recommendations are

Little Nemo DreamCatcher

Mickey Mousecepades

Do Not List The Following (as they are well known titles):

TMNT 1-3

Zelda 1 or 2

Mario 1-3

Dr. Mario

Tetris

NO SPORTS GAMES

MegaMan 1-6

Batman

Ok try these:

A Boy and His Blob, Adventure Island series, Adventures of Lolo series, Amagon, Bad Dudes, The Battle of Olympus, Bionic Commando, Blades of Steel (I know you said no sports.... but you gotta have this one), Crystalis, Dragon Fighter, Dungeon Magic, Exodus, Faxanadu, Goal! (and this one... lol), Golgo 13, Gotcha!, Jackal, Kabuki Quantum Fighter, Karnov, The Lone Ranger, Low G Man, Mighty BombJack, Monster in My Pocket, P.O.W., Star Tropics, Super Dodge Ball, T & C Surf Designs, Trojan, Werewolf, Willow, Yo! Noid, Zodas Revenge.

Most of these are obscure enough, and great games as well. Not to many people probably still remember any of these games. I went through my personal list of over 350 NES games, and hand selected these, just for this thread! :) I hope you get some fun out of these titles, seeing as though they are the best games nobody remembers!

There's a pretty good game, which I hardly ever heard of.

A platformer, which kind of reminded me of a mixture between contra and ninja gaiden.

If I recall properly it's title's Shadow Ninja or Shadow of Ninja, probably it was known in other regions, but here it was one of the rarest.

River City Ransom, Superspike V'Ball, GI Joe. All really good, but underrated games.

And technically Superspike V'Ball is a sports game, but trust me its worth a try. I dont like sports games much myself.

slingshot_ylo

awesome im not the only one who remembers powerblade

i hate to say it but ducktales (yes the disney/capcom game) was really fun and even rescue rangers was pretty fun too.

batman return of the joker has probably the best nes graphics out there and was pretty fun, though not too difficult.

Mareczek99

it was shadow of the ninja, i had that. it was 1 or 2 player and you got different weapons like a longer sword, shurikens, bombs, a grappling hook weapon and some other stuff too. i beat that game so many times :P it was an awesome 30 minute or so playthrough

I saw The Lone Ranger listed, but I'm going to give a shout-out to it, because that's an ignored gem that's much better than you'd think for an old license that Konami probably got for cheap. It's pretty lengthy, has some RPG elements, arcade light gun/dungeon crawler segments, and many other gameplay types that somehow manages to do all of them pretty well. Password saving is sort of a pain, but it's a pretty long game in its own right, especially if you've never played it before. Hard to find but very, very worth it.

Adventures of Lolo

King's Knight

Shadowgate

Crystalis

Faxanadu

Bomberman

Dragon Warrior series

Wizards and Warriors

Ultima

Advanced Dungeons and Dragons

Adventure Island

Kid Icarus

Those are just a few of the many games/series that I've not seen too many people mention, outside of this thread.

Yeah, T&C Surf Design's skateboarding is actually what I meant, it is actually quite fun. Now, the surfing on the other hand... well, I don't think anybody understaood that 20 years ago or now... LOL

I forgot to mention (these are off the top of my head, as most enjoyable, without looking at my list)

Journey to Silius, Solar Jetman, Battletoads, Dragon Warrior series, Ultima series, Blaster Master, Cabal, Snakes revenge, Guerilla War, Ikari Warriors series, Contra, Super C.....

ok, I think I gave you a good list to shoot for.

I saw a few that I was going to mention get mentioned already. I would advise taking note of games that get multiple mentions and checking them out. The obscure games that I thought were great (off the top of my head):

Gunsmoke
Defenders of the Crown
Blaster Master
The Guardian Legend
Kid Icarus
Bionic Commando
Wizards & Warriors

And in keeping with the theme of suggesting really good sports games for someone who specified no sports games:

Baseball Stars :P

(Edit: I know how to spell I promise...)

From the collection I had, I'd say:

  • Gun-Nac
  • StarTropics
  • Section Z

These were the best games I had that no one I knew had ever heard of.

Guardian Legend. It was an awesome hybrid of adventure and shooter, and no one ever seems to know it when I mention it. It was really fun, and pretty original for the time.

Come on guys... You are overlooking a game with a decent story called Vice : Project Doom... The music has a catchy or memorable nature to it , not to mention the story line it carries. Remember Pinball Quest? It was one of those games to have separate pinball tables to play, and an RPG mode where you had to build up your flippers and ball defense to progress to the next level. Besides the NES game Pinball made by Nintendo themselves, there is also Pinbot, and the under appreciated Rock N Ball. Rock N Ball was known as Family Pinball in Japan and the main pinball table had a Pac-Man theme to it. It was licensed by Namco-T. When it came to North America, the game was the same, except they removed the Pac-Man theme and redesigned it into another theme. (Flipper and bumper layouts remained the same however.) The game that had my imagination going back in the day I was younger : VideoMation. I would not call this a game, its a drawing program with different color pallet, stamps to choose from etc. Its not Mario Paint by all means, but if you had a Nintendo, this would be an excellent game to see what you can draw through the power of 8 Bit. Another adventure game I truly enjoyed when I was a kid was Battle Of Olympus. I could play it for hours and thought the graphics were really good for an 8 Bit System... I could go on and on about the games that one person sees but never gave it a try. But will leave it at here for now (FYI I am 30 now and greatly miss the old days of classic gaming and arcades :) )

F-1 Built to Win - especially if you look at it now, could be seen as probably the predecessor to racing sims like Gran Turismo, but never got the same amount of attention as Rad Racer did (no doubt due to the fact that Rad Racer ended up on The Wizard while F1 didn't). You started out the game with an original beetle that you could upgrade, and with racing money, you could get better parts in it, race different venues (to earn better licenses), and obviously get to upgrade to a newer and better car, until finally you were granted an F1, at which point you had even more separate courses to race on.

Destiny of an Emperor- good rpg featuring the legends of the Romance of theThree Kingdoms

Swords & Serpents- closest you could get to a multiplayer rpg. It featured a party of four characters that could be controlled by 1, 2, 3, or 4 people (with the Four Score). You even picked the classes of the characters in the party. I remember mapping every level on graph paper so we could go through the early levels faster when we continued.

AH! Arkista's Ring. I've been looking for this game for 2 years until I gave up. Could only ever find a few copies on eBay. Never seen the actual cart. REALLY good game. Think Zelda meets Gauntlet.

Ha! That's one you don't hear a whole lot about! And yes, it is pretty good. It's game play is kind of like Mega Man: Pick the stages in the order you want to complete them and get a weapon from the boss to use in other levels.
