I dunno where you'd find a list. but I bet old Sears catalogs would show NES games at $49 or something
Hmm... Old Sears catalogs. Good call! I'll see if I can't dig up a few copies. For clarification purposes, I've got a specific game in mind that I'm not sure would be in a catalog of any sort... Bee 52. I've got the cart, but it's been a LONG freaking time since it was originally purchased. I see them in "original factory sealed" packaging on auction sites all the time, but none of them have the original price stickers or anything on them. Yeah, I even checked those sites out... Anyway, a full list would be nice, but I'll repost here should I find anything in the mean time. And thanks for the advice! :D
I had to look this up the other day and I believe nes games were between $40 - $65 new at the time. I couldn't believe how hard it was to find those numbers out, had to go to youtube to look up old commericals.
Heh, good luck finding a commercial for Bee 52, but that's not a bad idea either. I remember blowing sixty on some early titles as well, but I kinda figured that the prices might vary by region or something. I'll keep looking.
regular titles were $50 (49.99) A list games were $60 (59.99) games with batteriesgenerally cost an extra $10
i recall these specifics as i remember dragon warrior 4 being 69.99 when it came out as were a couple other A list titles at the time (like star tropics and the original final fantasy)
Alright guys, the 1991 Sears Christmas catalog has prices ranging from $24.95 (page 513 - Adventures in the Magic Kingdom) to $59.95 (page 514 - Ultima). So I'm seeing between $25 and $60 new. Quite a range. However, I've noticed that I'm not seeing retail prices for unlicensed games in these catalogs, and I really don't know where to start with those. Commercials for specific games are difficult to come by, if they can be found at all, and there's next to no literature or print ads anywhere to be found... Thoughts, suggestions, comments welcome at this point.

1991 was around the end of it's lifespan, so I'm not sure that's where you should look. But i'm pretty sure 50-60 dollars was the general price of them.

I remember them as being thirty or forty bucks for the most part. Like any system, the newer releases were more expensive than older ones. To give you an idea on inflation here, thirty dollars in 1985 is worth nearly sixty dollars in 2010--but these things are notoriously hard to calculate. One way or the other, I think it is pretty clear that games are much cheaper today than they were back then.
Yeah prices haven't changed much people still get paid more either minimum wage or pay raises over the years but their going to whine about the price, human nature I guess.
