Ok. Now I want to buy one. Which one do you guys think is better to have! Which one has the best games.
This topic is locked from further discussion.
That's a really tough decision. I don't know. They're both great. They both have great exclusive titles and third-party support. The NES has more problems than the SNES (the blinking issue that nearly all NES's have). SNES doesn't have that issue. The SNES is also gonna have better graphics, obviously, as well as better controls (more buttons to use).
So basically, from a techinical standpoint SNES is better. But gamewise, they're about equal, IMO.
Go with the SNES unless you are getting a toploading NES.
SNES does have superior 16 bit graphics and sound.
But... a lot of the games on SNES were based off the legendary carts the NES had.
That's really a personal decision. You'd do fine either way.

I do agree with this both consoles have superb console line ups. He is right though the older models though tend to have issues, and like Terragon says above me you might want to go with a top loader. Though While I do agree with Emerald, the SNES imo may do better in temrs of RPgs, being one reason that the rpgs on the NES did not age as well as the SNES rpgs....but aside from that for the most part their libraries are superb.
Depends what you want. If you want old-school 8-bit graphics and sound and some tough, yet simplistic classics with their original graphics, get the NES. And if you want 16-bit graphics and sound with some a bit more advanced, yet also classic games, get the SNES. I'd personally go with SNES, but NES also has some nice games (like Mario Bros. 3, Zelda 1, Contra, ect.).
A comparison of what I think are some of the best games for each system. Hope it helps:
NES:
SNES:
You think Wolfenstein 3D on the SNES is a good game? :P
I'd add Yoshi's Island, F-Zero, Kirby Superstar, Super Mario RPG and Pilotwings to your SNES list.

If he does, than thats fine, its all subjective really. Again I donot agree with some of Emeralds list, but its his opinions and his motivation is to help the guy, so there is nothing wrong with it, and because I donot agree with some of it, does not he is wrong or right in any way shape or form. And to be honest it may not be the best port of Wolfenstein, but its not a bad one imo.

I don't say he isn't allowed to like it, but I find it funny he's counting it as one of the best SNES games considering it's a very butchered down version with no blood, giant rats instead dogs, very pixelated graphics, ect.

Perhaps, but sometimes liking a game goes for reasons beyond of what it is. We often forget that games are just like movies or books, they can sometimes effect us, and for some reason perhaps Wolfenstein 3D is one of his favorites and if so thats it. The list he put are his favorite games, and thats fine...like I said games can go beyond what they are and made an impression on us. So things like that in some instances donot matter....So no need for you to question why he has the game on the list.
When it all comes down to it, it's about eight bits more or less. Both were excellent systems.
But IF you decide to get an NES, get a toploader. Sideloading NES's are hit and miss. For me, for miss than hit. I like the SNES a lot better because of the standalone sound chip. The SNES made some really great music/effects on its sound chip. So did the NES, and it was integrated.
Both controllers are fine and very rarely give you fits. I think the NES controls can be a bit more jerky and demanding than the SNES's though. Depends on the input of the game you are playing.

We couldn't afford a PC in the early 90s. SNES was the only way for and most of my friends to play the game. I was in grade school.

Thats understandable. Hey you got to play the game and one that you enjoy so thats all that matters....
If you can find a clean, functional NES from someone you trust, then you have my answer. It is sooooo close though. Both have phenomenal libraries.
Personally I would say ignore the other comments all together if you are looking for the consoles to just play games on and not for collector reasons, then I can make your decision a LOT easier. For about the same price as a used SNES you can get a brand new, FC Twin (or similar product) that plays both NES, and SNES games. Do some research and pick the one that seems right. I mean my FC Twin is hooked up although I do have a top loading NES, old school NES, andtwo models of the SNES. Instead of having 2 consoles hooked up at once, it saves space and a mess of unnecesary cords. Right now I have 7th Saga in the SNES slot, and Monsters in my Pocket in the NES slot. If you have to have the original consoles though, I would suggest the SNES for the superior save functionality, and game library.

Well, man... so much for substantiated arguments; I don't think that's something that anyone wants to hear who's checking up on a game or a system, pondering whether or not to get it. If that attitude was to be adopted seriously, it'd kill the purpose of this thread, it'd kill the purpose of game reviews entirely, and pretty much the point of forums altogether. I don't think that anyone could adopt such an attitude seriously, and I think you're pretty aware of that and that you're just sticking your neck out for Emerald_Warrior - but what's there to defend?

Yeah, well... there's nothing wrong with providing reasons either, it makes it a simpler matter to understand each other; it isn't at all a question of not being allowed to like or dislike something, but a matter of communicating to others what you think, like or don't like and learning from and exchanging opinions with others. Everything should be taken with a grain of salt, ultimately everyone is their own judge.
Emerald_Warrior has provided a reason, if it's adequate or not is for anyone to decide for him- or herself obviously. I haven't played the SNES-version of Wolfenstein 3D, so I couldn't comment on it myself. Maybe it did the trick as a substitute, maybe it didn't. One day I might be bothered to find out, probably not. That's because unlike many others (it seems) I did not like Wolfenstein 3D, and the reason for that is probably not completely unrelated to the fact that the first FPS I played was Doom, but that's no argument in itself.
On a personal sidenote, I find myself playing Minecraft alot both on singleplayer and online. I wouldn't want to tell myself and everyone else over and over again that it's the best thing that's ever happened to mankind or whatever... to enjoy it - no such thing exists anyway, that would be a delusion. I'm precisely more concerned with the aspects of it that make me return to it time after time, because that makes it easier for me to know what I I'm looking for, what I want out of a game. And that's... a great thing, IMO. But I want the experience, the game; I play rather than talk about it. I talk about it from time to time, sure, and I think about it... but I'm in it for playing it. So far anyway. Well, I'm rambling on...
Edit: Fixed quotes referring to the wrong person.

I looked up the Wikipedia-article on the FC Twin - as I'm unfamiliar with it - and though it is severely lacking in sources, what is to be read there is not nice. According to it several games are unsupported, the controllers are of bad build quality - and irreplacable with standard Nintendo controllers -, and the sound hardware is poor, producing inauthentic sound effects and music on the games, etc. Later models are better? Definately do some proper research first.

First and foremost good sir, I cannot take you seriously at all because while you try to elaborate an argument, you go into an endless babble and overcomplicating the matter for no reason. Than you go on about Minecarft which has nothing to do with the argument. Second you said Ohthemanatee quoted this, but it really was me. Anyway your argument, consisted of nothing but endless ramble, and proved that you absolutley had nothing to say in the argument. Next time quote the correct person, and second....Try not to overcomplicate it and ramble on to make your arguments more sound. Have a nice Day! :D

Hehe, I better rely less on my capabilities of reading several threads, answering to one while reading another and handling the editor at the same time. Sometimes posts get messed up. Apologies to ohthemanatee.
I did say I was rambling. As a personal sidenote, I didn't think it at all completely unrelated to the notion of something "going beyond what it is". It's hardly even a game at this point, but ... I keep sticking with it, and so does many others... some to the point of obsession. There's something there. But I won't bore you with going into any detail about what. I do that already with the people I play it with (although we mostly just play it).

So I also wanted to add that the sound diferance is almost unnoticeable on most games, and if anything the color scheme is just a little bit brighter which actually inhances a lot of games in my opinion. Check out some youtube videos or something, wikipedia is about the most incomplete and untrustworthy site out there when it comes to electronics. It is open source and NOT always factual.
I have MANY SNES games, check my games list, and I have never played one that is not supported, and on top of that yes, the controller it comes with is complete crap, but SNES brand controllers are completely supported. I have been using an oficial SNES controller with it from day one, the same controller works with NES games as well. Trust me, I am an oldschool game player and collector of all gens, and the multi plat consoles are not as bad as they get potrayed as. As you should know by know, the kiddies flame and bash anything they themselves do not own. I would not have suggested it i it wasn't good. Seeing as though over 500 of my games are NES and SNES.
Get both an NES and an SNES. This is when nintendo was at the top of it's game. I know that the wii has sold 77 million consoles. But the first two Nintendo consoles are when Nintendo was at it's best. 60 million and 49 million sold.
The games during the combined NES/SNES era 1983-1997 are outstanding. It is hard to choose between NES and SNES (both systems have tons of classics each)
So get a YoBo Twin console. An NES & SNES hybrid console. Than was you can play both systems games.

OK.
I'm not getting it myself, I just thought that it wouldn't hurt to look it up properly before deciding, as there are - let's call them rumours, that there are issues with at least some models.
In any case, I also think that both systems is the way to go, like you suggested. Part of their appeal is undoubtedly also that they both are pieces of video gaming history, besides whatever qualities there are to the games on them. Add the Mega Drive / Genesis and you have the three most important consoles from the 8/16-bit eras.
Well, there you go :)
If you want any suggestions for some of the more obscure titles that are hidden gems or what not, let me know. Im sure you know most of the mainstream titles that everybody say are the best because that is all they have everplayed.

It doesn't play SNES games unfortunately, but the Generation Nex is the best way to play NES Games. It works even better than the original NES itself. No more blinkies. And the sound and game performance is top notch. However it costs around the same price as an original NES.
I'd go with the SNES. While I love both systems, it was the SNES that reached the perfect peak in console capabilities. The NES has always felt slightly too limited in terms of gameplay length and depth, as well as what was typically available for gameplay storylines. Nostalgia has been the driving factor for going back to many of my NES games, whereas I return to SNES games because I still find them really enjoyable.
When comparing RPGs, SNES games typically had better storylines and more dept to the combat system from those that I can remember.
With platformers, SNES games were longer and more diverse in level design.
I didn't play many other genres, so can't comment on those.
Overall, assuming that you've spent little time playing either system in the past and would thus not experience any nostalgia, the SNES is the better choice. Both systems were great, but if you compare things like:
FFI-FFIII to FFIV-FFVI
SMB1-3 to SMW (although I really missed all of the powerups available in SMB3 while playing SMW)
LoZ to LttP
Kirby's Adventure to Kirby Super Star
Metroid to Super Metroid
Most people will agree that the SNES counterparts were better.
I'd recommend SNES. Both are excellent systems, and I remember NES more fondly. But SNES games are, generally speaking, improvements on their earlier counterparts and hold up better today imo - Super Metroid to Metroid, FF6 to FF 1/2, Zelda LTTP to Zelda 1/2, etc. And in many NES games you cannot save which can be frustrating.Ok. Now I want to buy one. Which one do you guys think is better to have! Which one has the best games.
