I´v been checking a lot of profiles in gamespot, and i found out that a lot of people were giving a perfect 10 on many games, now i may be mistaken but isnt the rating "10" supposed to stand for perfection? The game that every other game wants to be but never will becase it is perfect, perfect sound, graphics, gameplay, plot, characters, action, perfect everything, even you searched it with a microscope you would not find the slightest bug, glitch or flaw, be it graphical or otherwise, a few minutes i have even found someone who gave four perfect "10" in a row (all to first party games of the same console) so did this guy met perfection with one game? Then as he searched the game he tought "wow this is one is even more perfect that the other" and the same for the 3rd adn 4th game? Sounds a bit contradictary doesnt it? Perfection is also aplied to uniqueness as in only one and thats it, never again because it cant be surpassed, if it IS surpassed then thats because the other game was not perfect to begin with. Well i feel like im going nowhere fast, all i really want to say is if your going to rate a game 10 then do it only once and thats it. thank you

Peoples taste is different. Me for example think that there are 3 games that simply couldn't get any better. Resident Evil Code Veronica (dc), Final Fantasy 7 (ps1) and Broken Sword shadow of the templars (pc). So when I think that those 3 games couldn't get any better, can I not rate them as perfect games?

But thats just it, isnt perfection suposed to be one of a kind? so how can there be 3? the games may not be able to get better, but does that mean its perfect? it only means that its the best it can be

I love it when I see someone rate every game they like at 10 and every game they don't like at 1--even if they haven't played them. It lets me know right away that I shouldn't waste a single second listening to what they say.

Stika I know exactly what you are talking about, but at the same time it is just to the person's taste. If they feel that the game they just played cannot get any better then I guess that justifies their 10, and that is fine. For me however, the game would literally have to be perfect (which I do not see ever happening) - meaning no major bugs or glitches that are visible/prevalent, etc.

The overall flow and gameplay of the game needs to be right, the music needs to fit - if it is a medeival themed fantasy rpg then it needs to have those aspects and freedoms/restrictions you would expect in a game like that. At the same time though everybody has their favorites and I know I like games that other people find atrocious.

I love games, but I also like to analyze them in a way for everything they offer.

This is why I think 99% of user reviews are worthless. User reviews generally only show if someone did or didn't like the game, it doesn't present the game in a non-partisan way. Might as well just have a "did you like the game or not rating."

lol - Exactly. If you read the user reviews (most I have read) they always say, "This game is awesome! If you like Zelda (example game)you definitely need to pick this one up. How can you go wrong with the newest Zelda?"

That describes absolutely nothing of the game; and the rating would be like a 9.9-10.

I've never rated a game 10, the highest i've rated a game is 9.6 I think.

I don't think there's any game that can be considered perfect, there's always something to nag at.

Rating something a 10 gives nowhere to go. Look at something like MGS. Probably in my top 3 games of all time, I would rate a 10. I think that game is perfect in every single way. I would definatly given it a 10. ANd then MGS 3 comes out and it's better. Where do I have to go from there? Another 10? An 11?

sometimes people are too quick to judge. new games that are fun seem to be the best thing ever in the first 2 hours of gameplay or so, sthen maybe they'll just hop onto GS and give it a 10. but there are times where a game is actually "perfect". unless they have a long detailed review rather than the usual short 1 paragraph of "OMFG THIS GAME IS GREAT", then it's at least a bit convincing

No game is perfect. It doesn't mean that they don't deserve the perfect rating, its just that they aren't perfect. I may have given games 10's, but why bother. There will always be games that'll probably surpass them in every way. Personally, 10 should be changed from perfect to something like Superb or something.

All reviews and ratings should be time specific to whenever a game was released. A game may be considered perfect for the time, but would obviously be not considered as great in subsequent releases. If you only bestow the rating of 10 on only that will always be considered perfect, then the rating will never be used, hence why even have that rating in the first place?

personaly i have yet to give a 10, but like i said i think we are all alowed to give "10" once in our lives and thats it, the closest i ever go to giving 10 was pac-man, but then the game had that level 256 bug (it was level 256 right)

@ gary: If a game is considered perfect or not it doesnt matter if the sequels build up on that, if the original was considered perfect for its time, then it is perfect, and can be considered superior to its sequels simply because "it was here first", at least thats how i see it

On my user review I give out one 10 per console.

Super NES - Super Mario World

N64 - Perfect Dark

PS2 - GTA San Andreas

I wait til there are basically no more games coming out for a console, and pick the one that I think was the absolute top game for that system.

Even my favorite games aren't "perfect". But some people don't differentiate between enjoyment and objective scoring. That is their right of course, but it doesn't work for me.

My favorite game of the last year has been Dead Rising. But I'll be the first to tell someone that it isn't for everyone and that it's got it's flaws. Same with my all time favorites and such. I've been gaming since PONG was it's own console and there are very few titles I'd call perfect. Like Gamespot I consider the first Soul Calibur to have earned the title. And I can't remember any glaring flaws from the SNES classic Super Mario World. But yeah, that's about it.

Look, my Melee review is my least favorite that I've written. But the game is perfect, I have to give it that. No, wait, it could've been better. How? Online.

If you refuse to give 10/10 to a game, then your scale just becomes out of the next highest score you'll give it. It stands for the highest score you'll give a game, not perfection. It only stands for perfection if you go to a scale of infinite decimals.

Well of course there are a bunch of tools who rate every game they have as a 10 for no reason, like some little kid who loves his pokemon games, but some games deserve a 10 out of 10. The problem here lies with the word "perfect". I believe Gamespot changed the word from perfect to Superb or something since I imagine we will be seeing a 10 out of 10 game soon due to the 0.5 increments. But you're right, people who just spam 10 out of 10 on every game dilute those who take time to rate it realistically or heaven forbid... Write an actual review.

"if your going to rate a game 10 then do it only once and thats it" lol there can be only one ^_^

First of all 10 (at least to me) doesn't mean perfection, because nothing is perfect. It just means that it is a truely excellent game.

Secondly, all ratings, reviews, etc. are all opinions which may or may not agree with. Just because I think a game is a 10 doesn't mean that everyone will think so too.

And lastly, not all games age well. A game that you thought was just the best thing ever back when it first came out may not hold up as well all these years later.

Basically a 10 is simply amazing, an 11 is perfect ^_^

There are a few (very few) games I choose to give a 10 on MY rating list. Because it's MINE. Otherwise it would be everybody elses views, which it isn't. If you want a universal rating for the game, look on the overall rating, not the personal ones.

Why the hell would there be a 10 rating if no-one ever used it?

OMG THIS GAME ROX OMG THIS GAME ROX OMG THIS GAME ROX OMG THIS GAME ROX OMG THIS GAME ROX OMG THIS GAME ROX OMG THIS GAME ROX OMG THIS GAME ROX OMG THIS GAME ROX OMG THIS GAME ROX OMG THIS GAME ROX OMG THIS GAME ROX OMG THIS GAME ROX ...

really don't help at all, even if you fully agree. That's just irritating. Similar for the word "sux". I can't tell you how many "reviews" I've seen like that here.

Thanks to GameSpot, (who took a perfectly good review system and butchered it to peices) I kinda have to rate some games 10, but ifwe still usedthe old system I would really rate these games 9.8, 9.9, etc

You do know that the new scoring system only applies to GS itself right? Not user reviews.

I don't really ever bother reading user reviews. I look at the aggregate score since that tends to be pretty reliable, and then browse through some user reviews to look for trends (such as "controls suck" or "great plot", things of that nature).

User reviews are mainly useless to me. People mostly give a perfect ten or a lousy two. It just tells, if they liked the game or not (like other people said).

Not even can 1 game be a 10. Sure, it can be a good game! It can have good elements, it can even have 1 thing that you think surpasses ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING else in all other video games that you have played. But, thats the thing-that you have played. It is litterally impossible to play every single video game ever. And, even if you did play every single video game ever made, new ones are coming out EVERY DAY. There can be no such thing as perfection in a video game, because something better is coming out every day. 10 is an outrageous number. Now, 100, that's possible.

I gave a 10 to zelda: twilight princess, which was more to bump up the score from all the 1's that dumb purist retro kids were giving it than anything else. If I re-reviewed it, I'd probably give it ~ a 9.5. It was an amazing game.

I've given 9.9's out to both gta: san andreas and battlefield 2 because they were both absolutely amazing games. but yeah, I agree with you, there's only a couple of games in the history of video gaming that have reached near perfection. Though I can see giving a phenomenal game such as ocarina of time a 10/10 even if it has some tiny flaws.

Thanks for trying to tell people how to rate their games. Next, you'll be telling us how to live our lives.

Whatever out of 10 is an opinion. That's what everyone in this thread is missing. I see all this talk about, "Yea so-and-so magazine is not biased" or "Gamespots system is jank" but the problem isn't them. It's YOU. It's like getting mad over someone who prefers rap to rock music. It's THEIR opinion. You are the problem if you have a problem by thinking you control everyone else's opinions.

Whatever out of 10 is an opinion. I don't know how many times I have to say this.

My next example might be a little wacky, but look at the point.

If you go to board game geek, you'll find tons of board games and reviews. If you read a bunch of reviews for a certain game, you'll find out... IT SAYS THE SAME THING!

That's because each review IS THE SAME as in they will all tell you the same information like, "this game has 2 players, this game uses dice", blah, blah, blah. What's different is the words used to say pretty much the SAME EXACT THING, OR what the opinion of the game is.

Similarly, game reviews are like this. THEY SAY THE SAME EXACT FACTS. ZELDA HAS DUNGEONS. ZELDA HAS BOSSES. ZELDA HAS PUZZLES. Duh. But it's the opinion of all these reviews that are different. Maybe someone hated puzzles and reviewed Zelda? Maybe someone loves puzzles and played Zelda? It's taste.

So WHAT IS THE POINT OF REVIEWS? Look at the facts. Decide for yourself WHAT YOU ENJOY. Stop making those annoying, "What game would I like?" threads. That's like asking, "What is my favorite ice cream". Pointless questions really.

Bottom line is that, Whatever out of 10 is an opinion and has NOTHING TO DO WITH A REVIEW. Reviews are factual pieces that can be written by anyone, because they say essentially the same exact thing. People at gamespot, ign, or any other big media sites just happen to have fancier ways and use better vocabulary, to essentially say the same thing.

Reviews are factual pieces. Opinions are bias (I call it BS) coming out of someone's face. What we see as "reviews" here or most anywhere is reviews plagued by this bias, which ultimately warps the reader into favoring the reviewer. We don't like our news twisted by opinions by some popular media, so keep reviews opinion-free. It's time people think for themselves.

Honestly, its peoples opinions. If you don't wanna listen or read their reviews, dont. Simple as that. Not everyone gives detailed reviews on Every game they play. I don't. The only game i gave 100% was Castlevania SOTN. Now, a lot of people might think it isnt wortha 10, but IMO, it's flawless. Sure, there might be several games like it, but this one is perfect IMO.

The only game that I think deserves a ten is the original KOTOR for the PC. It had style, nice graphics (even by todays standards if you crank up the Anti-analysing and Resolution) and most importantly - a immersive and well written story. Other games have been good (Warcraft III rates very high in my opinion), but I don't think any game will be able to match how great that game was.

But I agree: some people rate games ten out of ten too consistantly.

LoZ: OoT is the game that i find closest to perfection out of all of the games that i have ever played. And therefore, because it is the closest that i have seen so far, i gave it a 10.

The games that i really enjoy get less because they might be great but i have yet to see something equal OoT.
