Although Nintendo's official statement is that the Wii U discontinuation at GameStop is a stock 'rebalancing', I think it's PR BS. Here's a video analysing the current Wii U crisis as it stands today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOuPxkqQTkY Thoughts?

Considering most of my digital games on it would be VC, 64 GB would be a good starting point until I get an external. But if they repackage it at the same price, no deal. I'm sick of that practice. I want a REAL price drop.

They were being arrogant. They thought the casuals who helped them with the Wii would flock to it, and that they would also start winning back the core gamers. The casuals are playing games on their phones, and the core gamers are playing hard to get. VERY hard to get.

I actually really like the Wii U, and the tablet controller is quite comfortable and I like the two-screen and off-tv play.

It just really, really.... really needs some games. And at least a $50 price drop couldnt hurt it either.

Cause if the PS4 or FailOne release anywhere near $400 that $350 Wii U box will get passed up by anyone close to 'hardcore gamer'.

$349 is a non starter for the Wii U regardless of what games they have out by the end of the year. They have to yield on that, they really have no choice.

They need to do a price drop, increase hdd space, release a cheap bundle with a couple games and announce a heap of upcoming hits that people actually want. They seem too lazy to do any of that.. they just sit back and wonder why no one is buying their system.

Pure speculation and conjecture.  Gamestop had those things sitting around their stores forever and nobody bought them, so they sent them back.  Nintendo will now cross their fingers and hope they can get some other retailer to take them off their hands.

It may be a hypothesis, but 8 GB is nothing, especially when you weigh the usable space then add the 5 GB firmware update they introduced. The last thing they want is to have their product fail before the other 8th gen consoles hit the market. 64 GB at the price point mentioned with the estimated date makes the most sense, no?

Needs more, tablets can rock that much storage. Regardless, they need to do something much more drastic. Like better value for the consumer, and some titles wouldn't hurt, either.

Well, the Wii U is comparable to the PS3/360 so...makes sense from their point of view. Just wait until 2015, and get the 250GB version.

128GB would be a better deal.

Nintendo needs a lot of help with the Wii-U. I have one and enjoy it, but I see its issues. 64GBs is not enough. They would need, at the very least:

a 120GB HDD

a $299 price point for the premium, and only, console. This multiple sku thing needs to stop.

a firmware update to allow you to bypass the gamepad altogether. The eShop should be "browse-able" with a controller or wimote.

Speaking of eShop, your purchases should be playable on the Wii-u AND the 3DS, where applicable, like the Virtual Console.

Nintendo needs to enforce developers making the gamepad optional in games. (They're probably doing the opposite now and making it mandatory). Asynchronous gaming is not always fun and even single player games are not always better with the gamepad.

They need to include a pro controller, and a wiimote, in the box along the gamepad.

Nintendo should price all first-party games $49.99, seeing that they're using old tech

I think these suggestions would make the Wii-U much more attractive, give players all the tools they need to play, and keep the Wii-U in line with pricing and expectations of the 360 and PS3. Nintendo cannot compete with the new consoles at this time. Not even just because of the power, but services and connectivity as well.

Although everything you mentioned would be an greatly beneficial, realistically, it'll never happen. The touchpad is not mandatory for developers to code for however; they can code for the Pro controller if they'd like. SONY got overconfident with the PS3 after the massive success of the PS2. Nintendo got overconfident with the Wii U after the massive success of the Wii. How interesting that Nintendo didn't learn from the very competitor they beat out.

I can see it having a four year lifespan similar to the Gamecube. Which means it may have a year and a half at best of actual decent support, and will die a slow and hideous death in the last year while Nintendo shifts every resource it has to it's next portable.

Aye, the main difference being that by 2002 the gamecube had a plethora of fantastic exclusives and later petered out into limbo, while the Wii U has been dead on arrival.

I have to say the Wii U is looking a lot better after this next gen news regarding the X1 and probably the PS4.

Smash Bros. and a new Metroid Prime and I'm in.

Seriously. Still sad though that the only way Nintendo is attracting me is through the screwup of one (2?) of its competitors.
