Well I've never actually played any of the past games, but I'd just about welcome any new jrpg addition to the next gen consoles, because well console gaming lineups could use a little more variety in general. The new Star Ocean looks slightly redundant, but you know its hard to make a true jrpg without being so, and in all honesty I don't mind I just want a shiny new next-gen jrpg with maybe a few slight evolutions and a decent story.

And now to the scans:

LINK 1

LINK 2

And here are some details, remember totake them with a grain of salt:

The game has been confirmed to be in development and new scans have been revealed as well. It has also been confirmed in the scans that, the game will exclusive to one console but not a multiplatform title.

However, the designated console has not been revealed yet and we don't which platform it will be gracing. Here are the first official details from the magazine.

Reports coming in shows that, the engine that , the game is been built on is only possible on the Xbox 360 or the PS3. So this is most definitely not a wii title.

· The game "isn't that far off"

· Specific details on SO4's release will be available by the time people are done playing the SO1 and SO2 remakes

· In its current stage the battles are already playable, but full of placeholder elements

· The story is done, and while he can't talk about its setting yet, there might be some surprises related to that at the TGS. But it won't be so different that characters from other games in the series won't be able to return.

· He concedes that past Star Ocean games have not really felt like they were set in an ocean of stars. In this one you will be able to pilot a ship and travel to different worlds, and while it will retain fantasy elements, it will live up to the series' title more than the previous games in the series have.

· The man and woman in the screenshot are the hero and heroine of the game. As a teaser they placed figures of them in the display at the SE party and he was disappointed that almost no one noticed.

· The heroine's name is Reimi. The hero's name is... (cough) (sputter) EDGE MAVERICK! EDGE FRICKING MAVERICK! Bwahahaha! Seriously!

· There aren't just two or three planets in the galaxy this time. There are more. Sounds like a lot more.

· You can have four companions with you in battle this time. There are a lot of new elements and it doesn't really feel like the battle system of SO3.

-Private Actions will, of course, return.

Confirmed? Wasn't this game already announced? I think I have it on my watchlist.

Ah, so the platform wasn't previously announced. Guess it's not going to be a PS2 game after all. Wouldn't really make much sense if it was.

Oh any suggestions for the title then...Anyway I agree totally that it wouldn't make sense for this game to come out on the PS2, especially not for Sony, who by now is kinda kicking themselves for making such a long living console in the PS2.

Well, if it comes to the Xbox 360, it will be worse for Sony than if it had come to the PS2.

So far the game looks like what SO3 should have been. Not too shabby so far. Oh yeah, I see the series continues its tradition of mindnumbingly idiotic names for its lead characters.

1.) I want it.

2.) Star Ocean 3 sucked BAD, at least in comparison to the awesomeness that was Star Ocean 2 (one of my favorite games of all time and definetely favorite RPGs of all time).

3.) I knew the hero would have some lame name like that. Remember Fayt Linegod? Gag me.

4.) Not to sound System Wars-ish, but I'm EXTREMELY happy this isn't on the Wii.

5.) Please don't tell me it's going to be on the PS2 as Gamespot currently has it listed.

PS3 or Xbox 360. The platform was still unknown when it was listed as a PS2 game. Someone must have made an assumption.

And obviously, if the Wii can't handle the game, the PS2 can't either.

True, as has pretty much every other main character in every Square game in the last 5 or 6 years.

Star Ocean 2 was one of my favorites JRPGS, it was long, involved and incredibly fun. The characters were alright and the game was a blast. SO3 on the other hand.. I got about 6 hours into Star Ocean 3 before the characters drove me to near uncontrollable fits of hatred. The way they looked and especially talked drove me insane and if I dont like the characters in a game, I cant play it at all. I would rather staplegun my testicles to my leg and urinate all over myself than play that game.

You shared a similar experience with me when playing 3.

They took everything good (ESPECIALLY THE CRAFTING SYSTEM  ) and flushed it down the crapper and clogged the toilet on the way down.

As monumentally disappointing as SO3 was, its strength is still its gameplay which pretty much stands head and shoulders above nearly all JRPGs in existence to date (SO as a series, not necessarily just SO3).

The terrible characters, their ridiculous designs, the poor dialogue, the laughably piss poor OST, the amateur hour cutscene direction and overall production values really obscured excellent gameplay. At its core SO3 wasn't a terrible game, but so much of the overall package was just awful.

Oh yeah, and copying the plot of The Matrix wasn't the best move either.
The music that plays in the boss fight after the death of Fayt's father really just beat all, just when I thought I had played through every ridiculous moment in RPG history, oh wait, the theme that played in the final battle against Luther was equally lame.
The crafting system was pretty clumsy and too much was spent worrying if you had the right inventors or not, or how to even recruit them.

Well said, that and it just overall was useless I thought. Whereas in 2 you could make the two most dominating weapons in the game (Which you pretty much needed to beat some of the last bosses. Stun Particles for the win).

oh man this is awesome! Star Ocean was my favorite RPG ever. ( the one for ps1) you could do so much in it. I hope it will be more like that one and less like the one for ps2.

I've never played the Star Ocean games, but based on my experience with the Valkyrie Profiles Tri-Ace is a quality developer, so I figure I'll make SO4 my entry point into the series.

Ummm battle wise they play alike, you know the free roaming battle system after you get inside the battle arena but star ocean's story is piece of random crap. At least you know the drill in valkyripe profile games...

I'll certainly be looking forward to hearing more about SO4. Like most in this thread, I wasn't too thrilled about SO3 (although I did enjoy it), but I consider SO2 to be one of the best RPGs ever. Some will say it was Square's influence that caused SO3 to be inferior to SO2, but I don't buy that for a second and I'm firmly convinced S-E can produce an awesome installment in this series.

And I guess I don't really care which platform it's on, although I also don't want it on the Wii. Not just because it's the only console I don't own, but also because...well, I have my reasons. No need to get all negative.

I may give it another try someday as I can pick it up for cheap and thats exactyl what im doing with all the last gen titles I want... but I remember really hating it at the time in comparison to the second game. JRPGS have already had their golden years, the PS1 era. The PS2 era just dosent really compare. I played Dragonquest 8 and Suikoden 5 and both I rate a 9 but everything else...eh. The PS1 era had SOOO many good JRPGS its mind boggling. After taking such a long break from them im finally fumbling my way back into the genre again this gen seeing what titles like FF13 and SO4 have to offer.

I love Star Ocean, and I'm happy that tri-Ace didn't decide to end the series at #3. This is what I hope to see: 1. Something similar to Battle Trophies, but expanded in some way. Get rid of the ridiculous ones and keep in fun stuff (like beating the final boss at level 1). 2. More flexible combo system. Allow the player to get creative, just like in Valkyrie Profile 2. 3. Varied battlefields. SO3's battlefields had various shapes, but they could have been much better. More obstacles would be great, as well as elevated ground. Terrain should play a factor in some way, especially if you mix in battle formations. 4. Colosseum battles will probably return, but I hope they come in a variety like how they were in SO2. 5. I liked SO3's multiplayer mode, but it should've been a mode that you could've chosen from the main menu instead of visiting Welch in-game. 6. Item creation...in some ways SO3's item creation was better than SO2's system, and other ways it was worse. I assume that there will be a new item creation system, so I'm not sure what to say about it, except make it less random?

I don't know, I was never impressed or got into the Star Ocean series. Especially Star Ocean 3: Till the End of Time. This game convinced me that Tri-Ace really needs to hire some pro-writers because the story was borderline insanity + anime-plagued cliche. Talk about not knowing how to tell a story, sheesh. And what was up with the crazy twists that really had no relevance to the characters or story? It was a mess, I thought. This game takes the cake.

Maybe Star Ocean 4 will be better. But I will say this, not even pretty graphics will make me want to play this game if the story is stupid. And I hope they fix the battle-system. I think the Radiata Stories' battle-system was what Star Ocean 3 should've been like.

Sorry for the slight rant, but Star Ocean 3 was the biggest disappointing last-gen RPG I played.

Although the first Valkaryie Profile is a clas-sic, Tri-Ace games, in my opinion, really haven't had great story tellingnor characters since then. They're above average, kind of like the guys behind the Tales` series butmore tech-junkied.

I say they're a good size behind Level-5...compared to them, Tri-Ace is a "level-3," if you know what I mean.

A good, another exclusive that further justifies having both the 360 and PS3.

In Valkyrie Profile 2 the story was nothing to write home about, but it didn't get in the way (VP2 didn't spend much time telling its story) so I didn't mind. Both VP1 and 2 play really well, and for kickbutt battles, I can forgive much.

Whoever said Fayt is a walking, talking hardcore JRPG cliche deserves my personal gratification and praise. Man, I can't stand that stuff. I was a fan of SO2, but as soon as I saw the main players for SO3, I didn't even play it. I'm sorry, but we all have our own biases - this is mine.

Judging solely by the scan, it seems the same might happen again. I will keep an eye on it though for updated information. Maybe it's my bad, but I'm tired of that whole cliche now. I want someone older, grittier, less "innocent" - if I wanted otherwise, I'd just watch an anime or something.

Down with the innocent kid that finds his path inexorably altered when some large force(s) threatens his world and his loved ones, such that he contends with it using some unfathomable power begotten at some young age. Or he's just super strong and all the adults are complete arrogant buffoons that underwent mandatory IQ downgrades at age 21 (kinda similiar-ish toThe Odyssey if anyone ever watched that).

And then maybe some amazingly available heroine will join such innocent kid, and perhaps they will have a history together, their affection for one another only strengthened by their comrades that seemingly onlymake thingsmore awkward, yet that much more intimate for the pair. But hey, I guess that was SO2 as well.

See, whoever said that quote initially got me onto this whole diatribe...! Sorry guys.
