Hi My name is Kilablaze and today i woke up and realized something looking at my console ps3 and My 360 how much next Gen Games SUCK real hard (you'll get my point ) its seem that for every pretty good game meaning 8.5 and more by any review website and such there at least 10 to 12 games that are really bad or just 3 days rental quality .

On Ps3 there about 7 Must have game and after a while they really become lame (mgs4,soul calibur 4 , gta4(( everything is 4 now Lol))cod4,maybe little big planet haven't played that yet as well as far cry 2, dead space (maybe i forgot some games but you get the point)

On 360 Halo 3 (fable 2 must be like the first one with much more content and longer )Gears,gta4,elders scroll(on ps3 also )orange box(ps3)Forza (but lets be honest on a sports game just give us better graphics and everybady will buy it ) the guitars hero and the rock bands bioshock which is cross platform and that about it .

i mean its time the shed the freaking and dumb hype that hamper the quality of the game.Every place you go now got a game advertising, ok it has become a mass media more than ever, but is it just me i felt that i had way more fun playing halo 2 than 3 (even if halo 2 had a crappy story and the 3 made up for it ) the other metal gear even if the 4 is just outstanding , and san andreas was just plain addictive fun as compare gta4

its not that i would trade in my console and all but i feel like the game in this gen don't have the fun factor like previous gen games

well tell me what do you feel about it because before having my next gen console and watching other play it seem better but now for me it fell regular

I disagree with your summary of the current generation, but more importantly can we stop calling the current generation "next generation" and call it either the 7th Generation or the "current generation"?

i cant say i totally agree but in a degree, i agree.

sadly this gen is just all about graphics... when i first thought next gen after i heard ps3 will have BD while we were still playing ps2, i thought bigger, more destructable, more interactive worlds, longer games... ofcourse graphics should be better but i think its the only thing got better... most of games are now like all flash no substance but still there are fun games...

i enjoyed MGS4 alot because it improved gameplay alot and its gameplay more fun than before... I got Uncharted by thinking it was an adventure game like Tomb Raider but found out it was more a tps and i dont like shooters much...but the game was so much fun thanks to its AI and its visuals, environments, characters. the game world was something i expected, big and beautiful so i enjoyed it alot even it was just 10 hours game ( i took my time exploring ) so with quality over quantity i enjoyed it...

i had more disappointments than enjoyment but still i think new games will be better. i still look forward to some games so i'm hopeful

I'd disagree. From the very begining I've been having a total blast with this generation of games. From Dead or Alive 4 to Oblivion to Dead Rising to Lost Planet to Gears of War to Halo 3 to Mass Effect to Ninja Gaiden 2 and most recently Dead Space I've been having a fantastic gaming experience. This doesn't seem to be letting up anytime soon either with Fable 2 and Farcry 2 already out and Gears of War 2 just around the corner. Then you have Resident Evil 5 and Star Ocean 4 coming out soon next year. This generation is going along at a fantastic pace.

I'll disagree, I say the last 2 gens have been horrible. This is coming from a pc gamer who in the late 90's bought about 10-12 new games a year but now is lucky to get 3. The quality has been going down since about 2001 and its sad because games have always been my favorite hobby.

Hopefully the gap in visuals between this gen and the next one wont be as pronounced as it was from last gen to the current one. Any large increase in visual quality such as the one from last gen to this one garners a certain amount of lazyness from developer and publisher houses. They know as long as a game is marginally playable and looks really good at least some people will buy it off wow factor alone.

The trend of flash over substance is grinding on my last nerve. Im to the point where i dont even buy games unless they are part of a franchise that i know doesnt suck.

This is the casuals' generation of gaming. Everything about the games of today screams mainstream and casual. The only areas of import to mainstream gamers [of today] is graphics and hype. Hype a game enough, give it nice enough visuals and you're virtually guaranteed to move units. And compounding this, with the solidifying of the on-line infrastructure, games are being made more and more half-baked and content devoid than ever before.

This is the vertitable 'McDonalds era' of video gaming. >_>

I have always been a Nintendo Fan. I know any Mario or Zelda game will be a great game - it has been that way since the NES. Nintendo has always done that, they make games that they know are going to be good without concentrating on the graphics, but the game play. But the WII was such a disappoint to me. I don't like the controller at all, I hate how you can't be a lazy gamer to play Nintendo anymore. It is a shame that Nintendo took the path they did, by targeting young kids and much older people. I refused to buy Zelda for the Wii, I instead bought it on the Gamecube and enjoyed it greatly.

As for Xbox 360 and PS3, they concentrated on graphics... There has been SO many games that came out that were hyped so much, but ended up being horrible because publishers wanted the game to look great, whether then have great game play. Now don't get me wrong, there have been MANY great games this generation - Oblivion being one of my favorite games, as well as Gears of War, Fable 2, Far Cry 2, and many more. But yes, I do believe PS3 and 360 are more about graphics - which leads me to saying you can't go wrong with Nintendo - decent graphics, awesome game play - if you can get over the damn remote...

All in all, I believe every generation is hit or miss with their games. And now a days, critics are so harsh on games, it is hard to choose a game to play, unless of course you have the money to buy every game that comes out, or rent every game that comes out. I buy games that I know will be good - for instance Gears of War 2 should be great as the first one was - Far Cry 2 is great, because the first one was. Fable 2 is still a toss up for me because I didn't like the first one. And Fallout 3 should be good because Bethesda did a great job doing Oblivion and I believe they won't let us down with this game.

In my opinion, your best bet is to buy a game that you know is going to be good - if you are unsure, read the reviews of some one you trust or rent the game - It is hard to drop $60 on a game that may not be good.

I'd say that there's a huge lack of research on your part if you can only think of 3 PC games a year to buy. Either that, or you only play some very specific genres. I'm uber picky and I'm buying between 13 and 20 PC games from 08. While console gaming has been very underwhelming this gen, PC gaming has been as strong as ever.

Games are getting better, but companies have got a lot better at promoting their games.

The result is that we have much higher expectations of what games should deliver, and get disappointed when they don't. If you can avoid the hype and constant bombarding of advertising, and just play the game you will enjoy it a lot more.

Personally I have found some brilliant games this generation such as Mass Effect, Crackdown and DiRT. This is the first generation of consoles that has been strong enough to make me want to switch from being a PC gamer to a console gamer.

I kinda agree, because I can see your point.

But I think that the reason for why the new games don't feel so enthralling is the fact that the biggest change have happened and there can't be anything like that anymore. The change from 2D to 3D was a great one, just like the change from Playstation to Playstation 2.

Now that they can play with the graphics all the way they want, nobody seems to remember the story part. "what does it matter? look at the real looking people!"

I truly hope that Final Fantasy XIII still has a good story and haven't ended up to that same way of thinking like everybody else have seemed to go.

I don't know, I've found games like Mass Effect, Metal Gear Solid4, Gears of War, Dead Rising, Saints Row 1 and 2, and Halo 3 to be pretty powerful games that I would consider classics that will remain with me for all time.

So, let me pose it this way. If this generation sucks so bad, how would YOU fix it? Explain it to us.

I am enjoying this generation more than last gen, a lot more. Just out of curiosity how old are you? I find a lot of the gamers complaining this gen is "lame" are at the latter end of their teens, to put it simply at that age the problem is you are over glorifying the games you grew up with.

First of all i said it totally suck to get people attention and i used next gen (name because compared to any leap in this industry this one i by far the biggest ever)I appreciate a number of game but i feel its more a hit or miss gen

The thing i would do to change them is put less focus on graphics hell if the game look par by the standard of the industry rigth now but has the best gameplay ever andinnovationyou have a champ and a award winner

Again i would put less focus on advertising campaign that cost more that the game overall productionbudgetand focus way more on the online community which on a lot games are pretty much left alone

my Points is just to remind video game are video games not movies or intereactive movies i want a game before everything so gameplay and fun factor are the must have

look a gear metal gear halo and such they know how to capture the essence of this but what happening but the mass of game with huge ad campaign and 6.0andunder rating

Look at my favorite lists. Ps1-2 had thousands of games but I only have 40+ games from each. NES had 400+ games and I only have 30+. The majority of games ARE crap and have been since the beginning of time. I think the cost of developing games has gone up so much its killing off smaller developers. We see BIG publishers merger left and right, thats not because they are doing well. That economic impact on gaming has just changed the face of gaming. Now we only get a handfull of killer titles for each console.

Add to that the fact that making sequals(and extremely quickly)is far cheaper than taking your time on a sequal or working on a new game then that further dilutes the variety and qaulity.

So part of it is the same ol same ol but the other part is just the affect of inflation. What also doesnt help AT ALL is the outragious price of consoles. Shrinking how many people actually own a playstation or xbox is totally stupid both for the console makers and especially for the game makers.

Critics are so harsh? BWHAHAHA , wow, critics are biased and pressdured to give good reviews, notice the number of games getting 9.5 and above is wauy out of whack? Any game with a bit of hype gets amazing reviews without barely any mention of flaws. Critics are too soft and un-trustworthy now. Games are to casual, easy and mainstream now,

KilaBlaze

big graphics and technical excellence is what the PS3 and the XBOX360 were built for. it's the reason for the big hardware price tags as well. developers weren't going to make games that didn't utilize the hardware. when you buy one of the consoles mentioned you should know what you're buying into; what you're investing in. little big planet uses the power differently, while most developers are either focusing on trying to get closer to films in the way they feel and tell stories, or making the most technically 'great' computer/video games they can.

i seem to remember a 360 ad that had a tagline something like 'play for the experience' or 'experience' the next generation. they also have taglines such as 'jump in', refering to the focus on immersion and believability. and as i've mentioned in other posts, experiences are fleeting things and don't imply 'solidity' or something that is long-lasting. some people love this, and others don't - it's kind of a split.

i don't think wii or nintendo is necessarily 'the answer' either.

i'm begining to think that video games, on a mass-market commercial level, can't offer anything better than hyper-masculine power fantasies. if we're lucky we might get a hyper-masculine power fantasy with a good story or one with some new technological innovation that spans a generation of 'improved' masculine power fantasy games that incrementally innovate, but only under the aesthetic and theme of destruction and blowing things up.

they'll probably be more games like bioshock and more games that are influenced to comment on (american) political issues, but i can only see maybe one game a year that might do that, maybe one ever couple of years.

and i don't think fun is a necessary excuse anymore. gamers always say, 'oh i'm playing just because its fun', or 'it's all about the fun', and i think its kind of a dogmatic thing to say. developers probably say that too when they are modelling the 100th super-solider of the future, 'well, it's all about the fun' (i.e. nothing else matters), so if it's all about the fun we'll keep making these themeatically dumb games. take out all the serious bits and just make killing things fun. that should do it. so people continue to buy because shooting things is fun, and developers continue to make those kind of games without thinking. and it will go on forever until people question the conventions.

if you're sick of 'next gen', you don't have to play games. read some books or watch a film. they're are plenty of better games on the downloadable networks (world of goo, braid, artstyle etc.).

next gen? LOl, mS and Sony have so many brainwashed, consoles haven't been next gen for ages, never really were, a good PC is really the only real next gen gaming platform.

I think reduced quality has a lot to do with production cost.

Game-play might be still solid, and presentation improved, but level design took a hit due to cost production. Many games are trying to reduce their production cost, and that often means back-tracking, linear gameplay, etc.

Also, other damage current gen took is significantly reduced quantity of games.

But good thing is that developers seems to be more used to current gen, and games are starting to come out now. This holiday season is painful to my wallet. It took a while, but it looks like things are settling down.

Most of the good stuff usually comes out at mid console life to the end. How good was PS2 during first few years? It was bad enough to make me play The Bouncer for almost a month.

Just give it some time.

I'd have to disagree with that sentiment. This generation is as good as any before in terms of quality games, and no rose tinted glasses of nostalgia can change that, for me.

Disagree there are more good games than ever, and many of them simply not possible with previous generations technology. Not only that but PC gaming has also been the best its ever been in my opinion.

I am going to have to totally disagree. I think the games coming out this generation are right on par to where they should be. There is a lot to be excited about right now and if someone thinks this gen is not that great then I think they are being lazy. Yes... lazy. There seems to be a growing trend of people wanting to declare how the industry sucks and the games coming out this gen are just not very good. My only response, and it is one that I give with an incredulous face, is... "Are you not getting out, sir?"

I'm not sure about everyone else but I can look into this generation of gaming and see that I can control the amount of fun I will have. I define my involvement with how much entertainment I get out of this medium. There is so much out there and if there are people that are just not allowing themselves to have a good experience with this hobby then perhaps it is time they found another one.

As for me, I find it is a fantastic time to be a video game enthusiast.

do people here agree that this current generation includes:

PS3

360

Wii

DS

PSP

and all games on these consoles

or do people here use 'next gen' to refer to PS3 and 360 titles only?

Disagree there are more good games than ever, and many of them simply not possible with previous generations technology. Not only that but PC gaming has also been the best its ever been in my opinion.GodModeEnabled

I tell you what I have a high end gaming rig, i have so many great games to play, plus with mods I want to play them again adn again, I don't know where to get the time. The PC platform was so good, I sold my 360 on ebay.

No matter what gen you speak of, there has NEVER been a console that's had more good games than bad. Why do you think we hold those so few AAA titles so dearly in our hearts? I don't you can objectively define the merits of a particular generation of gaming by the number of bunk games it gave us. If you want to go that route, then ALL generations sucked. Instead consider the great titles each gen gave birth to, and use that as your measuring stick. And there have been quite a few excellent games this CURRENT GEN. But it's up to you to find them.

Lolz What do I think? I think your spoiled owning both consoles and playing all of these games. You should go read a book, excercise, or join the Peace Corps (looks good on your resume). Also, if your basing your opinions off games that are surrounded by hype/ reviews, take a step back and look around. There's hundreds of games on the PS3, but how many have you played? Same goes for 360. I'm not trying to be mean, but honest. I own a PS3 and my friend owns 360. Collectively, we've played most of the name-worthy titles out there. But at the end of the day, it's the DS that keeps my attention the most. Open yourself to new things and you may find something you like...

Christ, we live in some pedantic, whiny times.

I've been in this hobby since Atari and all this talk of a golden era is bull ****. It never existed and all the nostalgia-laden drivel in the world won't change that reality.

People tend to only remember the good stuff, placing the emphasis on their warm, fuzzy little memories and forgetting all the crap that flooded the market during EVERY generation.

It's even harder to swallow this self-indulgent bile when we are literally neck deep in AA and AAA games.

I mean, have you people really looked at all the goodness literally falling into our laps just in the last month alone?

By all means, delude yourselves into believing that gaming has already reached its apex and is now in decline.

Hell, go find a porch, buy a rocking chair, and talk about the "good ol' days" while shaking your fist at all these damn fool kids.

Personally, I'd rather enjoy the present and look forward to the future because some of the stuff I'm playing right now is simply stunning.

generally i agree, i am a gamer that doesn't get many titles, i have had the ps3 for half a yeaer and i only have two titles, mgs4, devil may cry 4(which was a mistake to buy this game). i played gta4 the missions are repitive and if there is a way to take an alternate route through the missions it isn't cleaer what they are, mgs4 keeps me on my feet, sometimes its a shooter, a platformer, a puzzler and always a stealth action game.

looking at metacritic, according to critics they show the top 20 ps2 games, and when u look at it u realise that these games came out over a much longer period of time, and the closest thing to a shooter on the list is grand theft auto and metal gear solid. This is why i think this generation seems a little lacking, mainly because the flooding of first and third person shooters on the market, they get okay reviews cause technichally they are good games, but in my opinion, gamers who look for new experiences know that shooters get tired fast, and only get the revolutionary ones like goldeneye. if u want a real shooter experince, only the pc can deliver that, and i still play cod 4 on the pc occasionally even though mgs4 still wows me in the 10th playthrough.

Japanese developers are making a comeback next year, they will deliver with many titles, from old and new franchises. to name a few.

white knight chronicles, valkyra chronichles, final fantsay 13, resident evil 5, bayonetta, and titles that haven't got much coverage or exposure are going to be released and they all can't be crap.

Also japanese devs is the reason i got a ps3 and a wii(mainly for the next gen zelda), yes most titles are multiplat, i know, and for gamer unity its only good, but the xbox360 is the main target from western developers, this might be why you are dissapointed, i am not trying to start a system war its just my opinion that the influx of western titles that generally do well inspire more and more games of the same, but thats just it its just more of the same, only exception i have for western games are sport games and western rpg's everything else is a shooter.

They are only just starting to realise innovation in gaming, mirrors edge is a good example, the only thing i am worried about for that games is a few graphical issues regarding screen tearing and shadows, and the length, this kind of game need the standard singleplay to BE LONG, just because you have the time trial mode for replayability does no justify a short game, and short for me is 12 hours. With a game that is so focused on gameplay it better provide lots of venues to which you can use it, and dowloadable content should be included with the game from the get go, or be free.(hey i'm cheap, what can you do :P)

sorry alot of angry gamers things came up

but yes games this generation as of yet does seem dissapointing but it was like this every year, when i got the ps2, i waited a long while before some killer software came, i remember that when i got it tekken tag was platnium, i got the system that late.

this generation is a long generation, maybe not as long for the 360 or the wii, but its only beginning

Shooters, be they first or third person, are NOT "flooding" the market. That's a myth, and one that fails to mesh with the reality of the overwhelming variety we have at our fingertips this generation. You say the X360 is mostly for the usual western shooting and RPG games, adizorz. Then why do I have JRPGs, 2-D fighters, 3-D fighters, 2-D smhups, puzzlers and more from a variety of Japanese publishers and developers? We have a lot of "shooters" but you could not buy a single one of them and still have a ton of great games to play this generation.

I think that might be one the reasons Nintendo did not focus on graphics this time and implimented a new control scheme because you could only go so far with current controllers. That's just my opinion not saying I don't enjoy some good games on all 3 systems.

Yeah lets all regress back to primitive lighting efffects and crappy low res textures. That'll teach those scumbags that graphics aren't everything.[/sarcasm]

I think the last two years have been some of the best years in gaming that I've had for quite some time. I think nostalgia sometimes sinks its claws too deep into us that might prevent us from enjoying the slew of games coming, but put me in the camp that says "I'm loving it!" Things started out in a cynical manner, but this current generation is a fantastic time to be a video game enthusiast.
