http://www.1up.com/news/nintendo-shareholders-unusual-question-iwata-responded

This is absolutely laughable: Nintendo was holding a conference with stock holders and one of them expressed concern about the drop in Nintendo's stocks price (now down to $23), he then went on to say he thinks video games are a waste of time and finally asked an incredulous Satoru Iwata why Nintendo did not distribute free copies of Wii Fit and Wii Balance Boards to the people struck by the 2011 Japan earthquake.

The best I can say is: Can't tell if trolling... or just really stupid. We all share concern and solidariety for what happened in Japan, but... Why would Nintendo pack up a million balance boards and send them to the victims of an earthquake? What use could those people possibly find for a glorified bathroom scale? Even if they did find it, how would they use them, considering the electricity shortage of those months? What was this guy thinking?

But most importantly: why does this man own Nintendo stocks if he hates videogames? His answer: "Because the name sounds nice"

The best thing about this is that Iwata actually answered his question seriously and politely... I would have laughed in the guy's face. Oh and turns out Nintendo did send real basic necessity material during the emergency, but didn't declare it to the press, so this guy fails twice

Because.... they'd probably keep falling off them? I dunno. That's a ridiculous thing to ask someone. Why not say, "Why didn't you donate more money to earthquake relief fund so victims could be given food and clothing and stuff they actually NEED instead of being electronics that won't help them in anyway." I'm blinking my eyes in reaction to this. :|

I heard through the grapevine that Nintendo is going to get the blame for the riots in Greece, and the wildfires and floods in the United States.

I am all for helping people out, supporting community, but that is not a reason for any company to just give out free product/services.

Actually giving out free products and services is what helping is all about and I could understand criticism towards a company that makes food for not sending goods to the victims... but Wii Fit...?

Why would earthquake victims want copies of Wii Fit in the first place?

I'm absolutely speechless, that's the most random stupid idiotic fail I've ever heard anyone say in regards to a natural disaster, or even anything. just lol.

It's a bit understandable that shareholders are stupid enough to know nout about the products, but only the profit

Surely the priority for the the people affected by the quake is getting a roof over their heads, medicine, and food, and making sure they are relatively safe given the scaleof the disaster. I do not see how giving free consoles etc would help them, althoughif they wanted to contribute anything then surely a few million yen would help make sure there was sufficient food, clean water, etc to tide them over untill they can start sorting things out for them. I guess the stock holder in a sense had a good sentiment to help out, however, maybe he didn't think it through (may have been one of those situations where your trying to impress someone, and say the most stupid idea because for a second it actually seems like a good idea, then you realise as soon as you have said it how stupid a plan it actually is).

I understand that as a stockholder of a company, an individual has the right to suggest the way the company operates. This shareholder of Nintendo, saying that games are a waste of time, is a little odd. I mean, is it a waste of time? Isn't his share of the company giving him profits? More importantly, Nintendo did help, but in a useful way.

I can't believe those kind of guys are allowed to own stock. No wonder the stock market is in bad shape if these kind of guys are running it.

Maybe Nintendo overstated how versatile a Balance Board is. Perhaps this guy thought it could be used as such things as:

  • A Flotation Device!
  • A Shield against Radiation!
  • Instant Domicile!
  • The Ultimate Camping Stove!

I mean, it IS the swiss army knife of gaming!

I only have one question.

How exactly is a Wiit Fit supposed to comfort millions of Japanese people who have lost friends and family to the tragic earthquakes?

Simple: By giving the joy of being in tip-top shape! They'll forget all about the tragic events in no time!

Seriously, though, I've no idea. Dude's got some weird logic in that head of his to think distributing Wii Fit would be beneficial.

I don't know why they didn't, Sony meanwhile gave millions and millions. I guess Nintendo just doesn't care about people in need or something. I thought with all that money they might be able to spare some, guess not....

Actually seems like it would be a waste of funds that could possibly supply something USEFUL to the victims...
