Like, if you pay attention to democracy, basically the thing is that an individual leader has to take care of rival politicans back home, who might sometimes force him into making different decisions.

While every strategy game in existence basically plays like you're a Stalin-esque absolute leader who tells everyone what to do, and kills and destroys everything without anyone second-guessing you.

Wonder how could a game that simulated democracy vs totalitarianism could work out.

The Civilization series does this to a certain extent. Long periods of war causes massive unrest to the point where you may have to end it prematurely just to make people happy. Same thing when you use nuclear weapons - your own people get pretty upset.

You can probably mod a Civ game to try out such an experiment.

Well when it's about military RTS that is easily because even in a democarcy a military system will ALWAYS still stay a totalitarism system and it HAS to be to work. Or could you imagine a situation like this:

General: So, everybody, next week we decide if we rush the enemy supply base or not. I count on all your votes, even on the extreme left and right wing sides of the parliament

It hardly works in real life. Why would it in a game?

Would a realistic game about American politics be interesting enough to be commercially viable? You would probably need an outrageous element like Congress being full of zombies that were threatening the survival of democracy. On the other hand, that might be too realistic.

Tropico? You can make wages higher just before election, and then when you win, you can lower them. Mostly a game about PR.

A game about democracy would just be a bunch of people yakking. Where's the fun in that?
