http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/obsidian/project-eternity

The countdown to Obsidian's announcement has expired and what was revealed is an M rated, fan funded RPG written by Tim Cain, Chris Avellone and Josh Sawyer who have previously worked on RPG classics such as Planescape Torment, Fallout I and II, Temple of Elemental Evil... Some of the highlights of the reveal are:

  • Project Eternity is based on an original game universe by Obsidian Entertainment's Chris Avellone, Josh Sawyer, Tim Cain, and Adam Brennecke.
  • The game is a top-down party-based RPG heavily inspired by Infinity Engine-style games like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale.
  • Instead of 3D graphics, Project Eternity uses 2D pre-rendered and hand-painted backdrops, just like old Infinity Engine titles, but improved by modern technology.
  • Project Eternity uses its own rule set built from the ground-up by Obsidian, and features party-based, real-time-with-pause tactical combat.
  • The character system will feature not just extensive combat abilities, but non-combat ones as well, from diplomacy to deception.
  • The game features adult subject matter and will explore social and political issues that some other RPGs shy away from.
  • Project Eternity features voice acting as "flavor", while allowing for extensive, reactive conversation trees in the style of Planescape: Torment.
  • Players take on the role of a single fixed character and are accompanied by companions throughout the game, similar to Baldur's Gate.
  • The game will be funded on Kickstarter in a manner similar to Wasteland 2 and Shadowrun Returns.
  • Project Eternity is PC-exclusive, and will be later ported to Mac and Linux.

[QUOTE="dvader654"]Pay for a buggy game to get made. :P I am no fan of kickstarter but more power to them if they can make this happen.

their last game wasn't buggy thanks to using the engine they built and will be using on this and South Park.

Kudos to Obsidian. New Vegas was an excellent game! Actually scratch that. My all time favorite game!

how do kickstarters work? do the investors ever get a percentage of the game's profits?

The developers start a project and they set a goal. Along with the goal they set a bunch of tiers. These tiers offer awards but i'm not sure of any that offer a cut of the profits. With most of the projects I've funded you at least get a copy of the game at the $15-20 tier. These games have $10,000 tiers in which the company people will usually hang out with you for a day along with let you assist in them designing a character/story/quest. For $60 these projects usually offer more than a regular retail game would but of course some of these titles are low budget/downloadable only game. There's usually forums and faqs set up where you can ask the developer questions directly and to me, it's a terrific way to develop games because you're taking out the corporate big wigs that only want to see profit and don't care how generic the game is. And if a game doesn't reach its goal ten no money is charged. On the downside, once a game does receive it's goal, there's no recourse to where your money went. Any of these developers could be partying with underage hookers in Thailand on our dimes. It's a gamble, especially with lesser known/unknown developers but like any investment it's ultimately up to you to decide if it's worth your money.

Kickstarter is basically a donation service. So you aren't an investor of the project. You donate to a project you want to see happen, if it gains enough money then the project gets its funding. In return for donating money to the project, many offer gifts in return for you donating, sometimes that means a copy of a game or other goods such as a t-shirt or poster.

What the ****. I can't believe the amount of people that have thrown away their cash like this. 46 people have donated 1000 dollar??? 5 people have given 3000... 3 have given 5000 and a whole two persons have given 10000. What the hell is up with the gaming community? I understand if you want to give away like 50, or 100 at most, but 1000+ ???

Most of the people whom give away that much money are people inside the gaming industry supporting their colleagues.

$10000 is to some people what $100 is to you. If anything, I'm super happy that there are some super rich gamers out there that want to support quality project s like this

The coolest thing i've seen about Kickstarter is some people with like minded interests pool their money together and get a larger tier. RPGcodex.com did this and i think they raised $5 or 10k, Gamebanshee.com is doing it for this game too.

Kickstarter won't give me a break.

Backed for $250.

What the hell is up with the gaming community?

Really. The other project I'm backing has over $400,000 but less than 4,000 backers. This has almost 30,000 backers and only $1,100,000, greedy people hoarding their money.

1.4 million, New Playable Race, Class, and Companion! Expands your options for character creation and adds a companion of the new class. 1.6 million, a Mac Version of Project Eternity and The Story Grows! We've listened and well make a Mac version of the game at this tier. We're also going to add a new major storyline along with new quests, locations, NPCs, and unique loot (special histories everyone?). 1.8 million, New Playable Race, Class, and Companion! The options grow for your main character and the roster of your motley crew expands with the addition of a new companion from the selected class. 2.0 million, Player House! Get your own house in the game that you can customize, store equipment in, and where your companions hang out, or, as the elves say, "chillax". 2.2 million, a new Region, a new Faction and another new Companion! And, dare we say it... ? LINUX! Great news, everyone! For the Tarball Knights of Gzippia out there, we'll be adding Linux support! Also, the world of Project Eternity grows in a major way with the inclusion of a whole new faction and the territory it holds. This adds new NPCs, quests, magic items, and hours of gameplay. And yes, you got it, another companion. 2.4 million and beyond! Coming Soon! We've been listening to your feedback, and have the following announcements: DRM Free: We are looking into it! Please check back for updates. Digital Only Tiers are coming! PayPal is coming asap. Please be patient! New $5k Tier. We are looking into a new $5k tier since it sold out so quickly! We are looking into equivalent alternatives.

im glad that this is the kind of game obsidian decided to make. it works more with what theyre good at and there arent a lot of rpg's unrestricted by voice acting and cinematics getting made made now anyway. i only hope that there budget wasnt planned using the same kind of stifling production schedule that has gotten them into trouble before.

You guys think they can make it to 3 million? I think they'll get close but not past that point. Then again, there could be a massive surge of funders during the last few hours of the project that could push it well past 3 million. Was only able to put in $20 though :(
