New or old? Well, I can tell you now that not many new games would make my list. :? (as a note, I only used numbers to quantify the list, this by no means reflects any kind of order of which game is "better" than another, they are all equally grand experiences from this year)
1. Shadow of the Colossus ~ Picked it up in late December 2006 and didn't really start getting into it until this year. Easily the greatest game I have ever played in my life. I could go on and on and on about it but won't, it will save me space. I've delved into the depth of the game so many times I feel it unnecessary to continue.
2. The Metroid Prime series ~ I played the first two back in summer 2006 but really didn't get to fully appreciate them until the third one came out this year. The second entry in the series is easily the best. It combines the best elements of the first with far more epic and challenging boss battles and many more creative items. Now don't get me wrong, the first is a great game and all but the second one completely shatters it in terms of overall quality and difficulty (Prime 2 on hard is stunningly difficult, more so then Prime 3 on Hyper).
Sure, the first one has a better atmosphere but then again, Prime 2 takes risks and tries something new instead of just recycling the old Metroid formula in 3D... and it does it magnificently. The third... well, the third was somewhat of a disappointment, at least when you finish it. The build-up to the ending is spectacular and the controls just completely reset what console shooter controls should be like... but the ending... is so incredibly anti-climactic. The bosses are pushovers and the ending leaves so much to be desired. Even Prime 2 had a great, meaningful ending and Prime 3 was supposed to be the end of a series.
3. Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast ~ When I first played Jedi Academy back last year I found it to be somewhat tedious at points. Many of the missions were nauseatingly boring and the demo gave me a totally wrong impression (they put one of the best levels in the demo). However, after picking up the "Best of Star Wars Combo Pack" (with KotOR, JKIIJO, BF, RepCom and EaW) I took a while to get into playing Jedi Outcast (I had bought it for Republic Commando, which btw, is yet another excellent game).
With Jedi Outcast, I was able to see where Jedi Academy got all of its level and gameplay design from... and I was shocked. Jedi Outcast turned out to be one of the greatest Star Wars games (and best games of the year) that I played. Every level was thoughtfully designed and was not tedious in any way. Everything about the game screamed quality. Not to mention Mr. Katarn and all his awesomeness. The game completely blew me away from what I experienced in Jedi Academy and re-instilled my faith in the Jedi Knight series.
4. Portal~ Wow. That is all that can really be said about the game. It is absolutely spectacular. Really though, the uniqueness of everything in the game just completely sets it apart from the rest of the crowd. It alone is worth the price of admission for the Orange Box. The creative sense of humour, the unique and nauseating (in a good way :3) gameplay and artstyIes just set the bar so high for what "quality" games are.
We need more developers with creative ideas like the team that did Portal, among all the "dross" (to quote Yahtzee) that is coming out this year, Portal shines as a bright light saving the industry from the dark pit that it is digging for itself with the reissuing of all the tired game cliches we've already seen. If you haven't played the game yet, you deserve giving yourself a treat. Sure, its short but the ride is so amazing.
5. DJ MAX Portable and DJ MAX Portable 2 ~ Music games on the PSP. When I first thought of the idea I just passed it off as senseless. I said: "you need a console or computer to play a music game" (even though I did have much fun playing Elite Beat Agents on my DS). Boy, how I was wrong. Aside from Beatmania (which I have yet to get into) DJMAX, a very suspiciously exact clone of Beatmania (made in Korea), is easily one of the greatest games I have played this year and easily the best music game I've played in my life.
My friend introduced me into the games back in late August or early September. Since then, I have purchased a PSP (for DJAMX alone, but the music playing features were somewhat of a aspect) and played so many hours of both games I have completely lost track. The games feature such a broad variety of great music it just trumps games like Guitar Hero that limit you to one genre. Not only that but the difficulty is quite varied which is great for every level of player. I started playing on four-button on very easy songs and having difficulty to being able to beat them and am now beatne all but one of the hardest songs on six button.
There is so much more I want to say about the game but am already taking up a significant amount of space so I will leave it at this: You own a PSP and enjoy music games, it is YOUR DUTY to buy DJMAX or DJMAX 2. Seriously, go to playasia.com and order one of them up, right now! Do it! Easily the best music game ever created for a potable device, no way it could get any better unless Konami actually releases Beatmania on the PSP.
Honourable Mention: ICO ~ Made by the same developers as Shadow of the Colossus and as nearly as epic of adventure. I finally found a copy several weeks ago and have only played it once. That is all that I needed to play in order to fully understand the true genius of Fumito Ueda. A stupendous game that gets over-shadowed (hehe) by Shadow of the Colossus far too often. Not enough people understand that the two games are wholly different from each other and by no means should be compared. They are both extraordinarily epic and should be owned by everyone who owns a PS2.
I would love to name more but would probably kill Gamespot's bandwidth with all my text. And kudos to those who read this post.
