What are the 5 best games you played this year. They can be new releases or classics or whatever. Hell one of them can even be aTigerhand held. What are the 5 best games you played this year that where new for you.

5. Call of Duty 4/ Halo 3 (Tie) - Both these games rock for there online multiplayer. They have good campaigns, but multiplayer is where these games are at. They are not revolutionary, just more of the same intensified with a little something new, but since they weren't broken, they didn't really need anyfixing. Great familiar multiplayer games. I really don't know which one I like more (right now I'm playing more COD4 but it is newer).

4. Starcraft - I really never played an RTS before so when the hype over the reveal of Starcraft 2 came along earlier this year, I wanted to see what the whole fuss over Starcraft was about. I bought the battlechest on sale for ten bucks (good deal) and found that the game really was something special. The play mechanics and balancing where a lot of fun. I like RTS'. Who knew?

3. Super Mario Galaxy - Man this game rocks. Loving Super Mario 64 I knew this game wouldn't dissapoint, and it didn't. This is one of the best platformers of all time. To me this in conjunction with Wii Sports makes the Wii worth purchasing.

2. Bioshock - Incredible atmosphere and the best story line in a video game ever, make for an arresting good time.

1. Half-Life 2 - Damn, when I picked up The Orange Box I wasn't expecting the original Half-Life 2 to be my favorite game of the bunch. I feel this and Goldeneye 007 are the best single player FPS experiences I have had the chance to participate in.

5. Fable. It's old school but i still managed to play it on Xbox 360, the graphics are actually pretty good, I can't wait for Fable 2.

4. Kung Foo Chaos. The single player is not so great but I almost pissed myself laughing in the multiplayer with some mates.

3. Mass Effect. I love my RPGs and this one does not dissapoint.

2. Halo 3. Need I say more

1. I hate to say this but I World of Warcraft is still up there. Grinding gets old but I just love the social interaction. It's like an old school chatroom while you play.

I'd say Half Life Orange Box, SMG, COD4, RE4 Wii Edition and Blue Dragon are probably 5 that stick out most.

Yeah Fable is high on my list of games I still need to play. I'll probably end up downloading it for the 360. I still need to play Resident Evil 4 if you can still believe it.

I am still dragging my feet on getting XBox 360, PS3, and an upgraded PC, so I haven't played more than a couple 2007 releases. But here's mine in no order:

-Metroid Prime 3: Great artwork, cool boss fights, awesome use of the Wii controller (grapple beam)... Retro is so talented.

-Okami: I had this game sitting around basically unplayed sinceit's release date.I'm now kicking myself for waiting so long to play it. What a beautiful, stunning game.

-Persona 3: I almost didn't buy it out of fear it would add to my stack of unplayed JRPGs but I'm glad I did. Was a bit repetitive but the story sucked me in once it got going and I liked this cast of characters as much as any game I've played in years.

-Psychonauts: I slept on this game for a couple years but finally got around to hunting down acopy. What can you say about this game? There's nothing else like it.It's easily the most bizarre game I've ever played, but that's part of what makes it awesome. So many ideas and so much originality here. Italmost gets too weird for its own good at times, but if you haven't played it yet, you need to.

-Super Mario Galaxy: I'mstill playing it and haven't decided if it tops64 orSMB3, but I wouldn't be surprised if this is the game of the year. At first I thought it might be too "kiddie," but now it just makes me feel like a kid again. And that's never a bad thing.

Also hard not to leave out Devil May Cry 3 and God Hand. WoW would be on my list but the early state of Burning Crusade left a bad taste in my mouth, so I left the game.

In no particular order.

Mass Effect - KOTOR system, with shooter elements, I love it.

Uncharted - Dude raider indeed, and there's nothing wrong with that

Virtua Fighter 5 - The best 3D fighter around got better with online

Call of Duty 4 - The deepest MP experience I've ever had

Bioshock - Very Atmospheric shooter, there's nothing else like it

For me suprisingly the games that I`m enjoying are on my PSP which I haven`t played until now.

Mega Man X Maverick Hunters. I love this games great graphic overhaul. The 2.5D graphics work great for this classic SNES game. Talk about bright colorful graphics and the anime cut scenes fit nicely too. Oh and the gameplay is spot on perfect also. Great game.

Castlevania Rondo of Blood. This game maybe as hard as nails, but all old Castlevania games are and I love this game. Like Mega Man X, this games remake is fantastic also. I even like the new graphics more then the originals. I`m totally hooked on this game now and I can`t wait to get a PSP Slim so I can play it on my TV.

Virtual Tennis World Tour. I`ve always loved this series and I like this version slightly better then the Xbox 360`s version. Tennis maybe a so-so sport, but it`s damn fun to play as a videogame.

Capcom Collection 2. King of Dragons, Knights of the Round, 1941, Strider, Side Arms, Ghouls n Ghost, Varth...etc. Oldschool Capcom at it`s best.

Ok these two games aren`t on the PSP and it`s a tie between these two.

Okami. I`ve let this game sit after I got halfway through it and I`ve finally started playing it again. This game just about, still kicks every modern games a$$ IMO. If there`s any game that can copy Zelda`s gameplay and doing it so well, this game can and it does it with incredible style.

Zelda Minnish Cap. This is the best Zelda game in 2D since Zelda ALTTP. I love the Zelda WW artstyle in this game and the theme of the game is so refreshing. Two different worlds in the same world. Link`s normal size world and the Minnish`s tiny world around and under Hryule. Plus this is my first Zelda game that I`ve played that doesn`t involve Gannodorf and It feels great not to face the same last boss over and over again.

New or old? Well, I can tell you now that not many new games would make my list. :? (as a note, I only used numbers to quantify the list, this by no means reflects any kind of order of which game is "better" than another, they are all equally grand experiences from this year)

1. Shadow of the Colossus ~ Picked it up in late December 2006 and didn't really start getting into it until this year. Easily the greatest game I have ever played in my life. I could go on and on and on about it but won't, it will save me space. I've delved into the depth of the game so many times I feel it unnecessary to continue.

2. The Metroid Prime series ~ I played the first two back in summer 2006 but really didn't get to fully appreciate them until the third one came out this year. The second entry in the series is easily the best. It combines the best elements of the first with far more epic and challenging boss battles and many more creative items. Now don't get me wrong, the first is a great game and all but the second one completely shatters it in terms of overall quality and difficulty (Prime 2 on hard is stunningly difficult, more so then Prime 3 on Hyper).

Sure, the first one has a better atmosphere but then again, Prime 2 takes risks and tries something new instead of just recycling the old Metroid formula in 3D... and it does it magnificently. The third... well, the third was somewhat of a disappointment, at least when you finish it. The build-up to the ending is spectacular and the controls just completely reset what console shooter controls should be like... but the ending... is so incredibly anti-climactic. The bosses are pushovers and the ending leaves so much to be desired. Even Prime 2 had a great, meaningful ending and Prime 3 was supposed to be the end of a series.

3. Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast ~ When I first played Jedi Academy back last year I found it to be somewhat tedious at points. Many of the missions were nauseatingly boring and the demo gave me a totally wrong impression (they put one of the best levels in the demo). However, after picking up the "Best of Star Wars Combo Pack" (with KotOR, JKIIJO, BF, RepCom and EaW) I took a while to get into playing Jedi Outcast (I had bought it for Republic Commando, which btw, is yet another excellent game).

With Jedi Outcast, I was able to see where Jedi Academy got all of its level and gameplay design from... and I was shocked. Jedi Outcast turned out to be one of the greatest Star Wars games (and best games of the year) that I played. Every level was thoughtfully designed and was not tedious in any way. Everything about the game screamed quality. Not to mention Mr. Katarn and all his awesomeness. The game completely blew me away from what I experienced in Jedi Academy and re-instilled my faith in the Jedi Knight series.

4. Portal~ Wow. That is all that can really be said about the game. It is absolutely spectacular. Really though, the uniqueness of everything in the game just completely sets it apart from the rest of the crowd. It alone is worth the price of admission for the Orange Box. The creative sense of humour, the unique and nauseating (in a good way :3) gameplay and artstyIes just set the bar so high for what "quality" games are.

We need more developers with creative ideas like the team that did Portal, among all the "dross" (to quote Yahtzee) that is coming out this year, Portal shines as a bright light saving the industry from the dark pit that it is digging for itself with the reissuing of all the tired game cliches we've already seen. If you haven't played the game yet, you deserve giving yourself a treat. Sure, its short but the ride is so amazing.

5. DJ MAX Portable and DJ MAX Portable 2 ~ Music games on the PSP. When I first thought of the idea I just passed it off as senseless. I said: "you need a console or computer to play a music game" (even though I did have much fun playing Elite Beat Agents on my DS). Boy, how I was wrong. Aside from Beatmania (which I have yet to get into) DJMAX, a very suspiciously exact clone of Beatmania (made in Korea), is easily one of the greatest games I have played this year and easily the best music game I've played in my life.

My friend introduced me into the games back in late August or early September. Since then, I have purchased a PSP (for DJAMX alone, but the music playing features were somewhat of a aspect) and played so many hours of both games I have completely lost track. The games feature such a broad variety of great music it just trumps games like Guitar Hero that limit you to one genre. Not only that but the difficulty is quite varied which is great for every level of player. I started playing on four-button on very easy songs and having difficulty to being able to beat them and am now beatne all but one of the hardest songs on six button.

There is so much more I want to say about the game but am already taking up a significant amount of space so I will leave it at this: You own a PSP and enjoy music games, it is YOUR DUTY to buy DJMAX or DJMAX 2. Seriously, go to playasia.com and order one of them up, right now! Do it! Easily the best music game ever created for a potable device, no way it could get any better unless Konami actually releases Beatmania on the PSP.

Honourable Mention: ICO ~ Made by the same developers as Shadow of the Colossus and as nearly as epic of adventure. I finally found a copy several weeks ago and have only played it once. That is all that I needed to play in order to fully understand the true genius of Fumito Ueda. A stupendous game that gets over-shadowed (hehe) by Shadow of the Colossus far too often. Not enough people understand that the two games are wholly different from each other and by no means should be compared. They are both extraordinarily epic and should be owned by everyone who owns a PS2.

I would love to name more but would probably kill Gamespot's bandwidth with all my text. And kudos to those who read this post.

Wow. Great post. I still need to play Ico and Shadow of the Collossus but I sold my PS2. The day I get a PS3 (not anytime soon) is the day I partake in those great games.

1. Shadow of the Colossus (PS2) - When video games become art. Epic. Amazing. Emotional. Words can't begin to describe the experience. Don't let "teh jaggies" put you off, BUY THIS GAME!

2. RE:4 (PS2) - Damn regenerators creep me out.

3. Gears of War (Xbox 360) - BOOM HEADSHOT!

4. WoW / Burning Crusade (PC) - Thank god I managed to quit. Addiction? That's an understatement, more like obbsession.

5. Warcraft III (RoC + TFT) (PC) - Had to get my Warcraft Universe fix after quitting WoW. My first RTS. I sucked hard, but who knew getting your @ss kicked could be this much fun?

since i sold my ps2 (worst mistake of my gaming life) and my pc is **** i depended on my DS for my entertainment needs so, the top 5 best games i played the past 11 months are:

1)hotel dusk: i love this game to death, that is all

2)pokemon diamond: it's been awhile since i played a pokemon game (kinda dozed off after ruby). too bad i didn't get the chance to take advantage of its online gameplay mechanics

3)the sims 2 series: i bought the whole collection of expansion packs till seasons. had tons of fun, too bad my gaming PC's dead

4)zelda phatom hourglass: i don't play a lot of zeldas simply cos i don't have the systems, so i was excited when i knew it's coming to the DS. awesome game, but somehow i couldn't care for it enough to finish it. maybe later when i buy my DS lite

5)metroid prime: easily the highlight of the year for me. borrowed a friend's gamecube and after a full week of prime goodness this game just so happens to be one of my favorite games of all time.

And kudos to those who read this post.

foxhound_fox

I definitely agree with you on SOTC. I felt an emotional connection with that game that I've never felt before - the excitement upon discovering a colossus, the adrenaline rush during the fight, the vast, almost overwhelming feeling of victory that accompanies each colossus death. And then.. the somehow touching return to the girl after it was all done with. All of this, without hardly any dialogue. Stunning. Easily one of the best ever.

Metroid - They're great now, too bad you waited so long to play them. Imagine how amazing Prime was 5 years ago. That's right, it's been that long. Trust me... the series is still solid and hasn't really changed at all . So imagine that half a decade ago. It was mind-blowing, to say the least. Nintendo is capable of making the best games with the appropriate resources. Period.

1. Super Mario Galaxy - One of the best games ever made.

2. Bioshock - The most atmospheric videogame ever created.

3. Call Of Duty 4 - A marvel of technical merit and super-polished, intense gunplay, online and off.

4. Ratchet And Clank Future - Rediculously fun platforming pinnacle. Some of the best graphics seen on a console, ever. Not to mention a really funny game - genuinely LAUGH OUT LOUD funny. A treasure.

5. Halo 3 -Nothing really original, butstill a blast. But I did play CoD4 much more.

Ok these are in no particular order because they are so different that they would all be number one in their perspective cateogory.

1. Halo 3- I mean the campaign was fun and I had a whole lot of fun playing through it on Legendary with a friend. It made it far more enjoyable than when I played through it by myself. The multiplayer is a lot of fun and there is a lot of variety in my opinion, but for the most part I really only enjoy playing it with one of my friends.

2. Assassin's Creed - While some of the parts of the game may be repetitive I feel as though I can't stop playing this game. I think about it during work, I think about it before I go to sleep. I even had a dream last night where I was Altair. Just down right fun.

3. Command and Conquer 3 - I have always been a big fan of C&C and this one did not let me down in the least. The missions are different enough to keep me playing through each side without feeling too repetitive and it was just about right difficulty on all levels.

4. Geometry Wars- This game has me so addicted to it that I just want to play it more than any other live game that I have gotten. So addicting.

5. Gears of War - I thought that playing through the campaign on Insane was so crazy and addicting, but it sure did frustrate me. The multiplayer was a ton of fun, but unfortunately I just moved on to other games. Would have liked to have gotten that seriously achievement but I didn't play the mulitplayer from the beginning so I got started late and never caught up before other games came out.

(5) - (Wii) WarioWare: Smooth Moves - Crazy fun use of wiimote, good sense of humor and great pacing.
(My Review)

(4) - (PS2) Burnout Revenge - The sense of speed in this game is just insanely awesome. (I never played Takedown)

(3) - (Wii) Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition - It would be in 2nd place if I hadn't beat the GC version before.
(My Review)

(2) - (Wii) The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - not as awesome as Wind Waker, but still superb.
(My Review)

(1) - (Wii) Super Mario Galaxy - I've only started playing it and I already know it's the best game I will play this year.

Man, you guys are late on SotC. ;) Very awesome game; it'd be on my list if I hadn't played last year.

Here's mine-

1. Final Fantasy XII: Not sure if I can count this one as I started it in late '06 but didn't end until February of '07. While I'm still not the biggest fan of the story, it got a LOT better at the end, and the game as a whole is possibly the best FF ever. It's hardly my favorite in the series, but there's a damn good reason I put 130 hours into this one. It's fun, engaging, and it has some of the best voice acting I've ever heard. I just had to beat Yiazmat and everything else, so it took a while. Heh.

2. God of War II: Not sure why I'm not seeing this on more people's lists, but it's in the running for Game of the Year, IMO. Yeah, I know about Mass Effect and Halo 3 and all that, but I don't care. GoWII was about as close as you can get to action perfection, even if it was on a last-gen platform. I think it's tied with the original and FFX as being my favorite game on the PS2, and considering that console's library, that's saying a lot. Can't wait for GoWIII on the PS3!

3. Gears of War: I didn't play it until finishing FFXII, so it definitely counts. The best game on the 360, IMO, and one I enjoyed playing from start to finish. I didn't think I'd like this third-person ****as much as FPS, but I was dead flat wrong. Epic did such an amazing job, I wanted to play it again immediately after finishing it. It's one of those games that everyone just has to play, regardless of personal gaming preferences.

4. Assassin's Creed: I know it's repetitive and I know it's a touch too easy, but I don't care. I could scale View Points, save citizens, pickpocket, eavesdrop, and interrogate all damn day long and never get tired of it. I love flying across rooftops like a fleet-footed God, easily dispatching guards with my hidden blade and just being a bad-ass in general. The game does a lot of things we haven't really seen before, and while Ubisoft didn't get the entire formula correct, it's still a giant step in the right direction for this new generation.

5. Warhawk: Maybe a strange choice, but I love this game. It did have some technical problems at the beginning, but those are all ironed out now, and it's basically the only game I play online on a frequent basis. It's just SO much fun and SO intense. The best part is that it's accessible without being easy, which means just about anyone can get into this one. I normally despise any flying games, but I find myself in the air 90% of the time in Warhawk, and while it can be frustrating, I've gotten pretty damn good at it. Entertaining as hell.

Yeah, I don't try and think about how it would have been to play Prime in 2002. Even today the Prime's hold up as some of the best games made. I'd would tend to agree with the last statement as well. Aside from the fact of their horrible stubbornness to bring new ideas in with the old and not make Samus TALK! *grumble* She talked in Fusion, why not in one of the first full voice-overed games Ninty's made? For shame Nintendo.

Uncharted- Probably the most fun I had with a game all year. I want a sequel now dammit. I loved the pacing, combat, shooting, graphics, sound, graphics...

COD4- Almost the complete package, if only the single player wasnt short and the AI isn't the worst AI evarrr. Multi player is a blast, complete opposite of run and gun, and I will be playing it for a while I hope.

PGR4- I haven't played it in a while with so many other games that came out but its really refined and a blast.

Warhawk- I only have one friend who plays this but we have an absolute blast playing together. Lots of strategy involved, no whiny kids, lots of replay value.

NHL 08- EA has done an amazing job with the skill stick, skating engine, graphics, multiplayer, you name it. Its the most fun I had with 4 players in a long time.

Some disappointments are

Assassins Creed- Im struggling to get through. Im on the 7th Assassination and I just wanna get through it asap so I can return it (overdue) and rent Mass Effect. I hate the matrix aspect and it pretty much guarantees to return in a sequel, otherwise the story would have to be completely different. Im hoping the next one takes place in modern day New York or something, still having the whole climbing aspect, ofcourse with much larger buildings, and snipers and guards with snipers on roof tops. Maybe something like Bourne. I know it seems weird to say that but you can transfer many of the gameplay elements over and it could be really sweet.

Bioshock- The death penalty (lack of) pretty much ruined the game for me but thats not all. I went in thinking it would be my GOTY but i couldnt connect with the story, hated the enemies, combat wasnt fun...I was just really disappointed with the design choices.

Halo 3- The single player is a blast minus the last few missions but multiplayer is what disappointed me. I got really tired of it. Ya I sucked really bad, but I find that its less about strategy and more about knowing how to take advantage of glitchs like shotgun->melee or using the sword to lock on. I would lunge at the enemy and fly right over them at times or just completely miss while enemies will lunge at me and never miss even when on lower ground. I could never figure out how people do things like this. In cod4 for example, if you are in position and shoot the guy, he goes down, thats it. None of this, throw 10 nades, waste two clips and get killed in .2 seconds.

since i sold my ps2 (worst mistake of my gaming life) and my pc is **** i depended on my DS for my entertainment needs so, the top 5 best games i played the past 11 months are:

5)metroid prime: easily the highlight of the year for me. borrowed a friend's gamecube and after a full week of prime goodness this game just so happens to be one of my favorite games of all time.

azfar_gila

Could Hotel Dusk be the most overlooked game of the year?
