http://videogames.yahoo.com/events/plugged-in/old-nintendo-system-sells-for-13-105/1389101

Taken from the article:

Everyday folk discovering colossally valuable collectors' items amid everyday junk has been the lifeblood of antiques shows for years, but it's not every day you see a real-life gold-in-the-attic tale play out on eBay.

Last week, North Carolina eBay user lace_thongs35 thought she was putting up an everyday, 80s-era Nintendo Entertainment System (together with five games) up on the popular auction site. But less than an hour after the first bid, the price was over $6,000 -- and on Wednesday, when the auction closed, the final selling price topped $13,000.

Why? Not the console itself, but one of the games bundled with it -- a deeply obscure 1987 release called Stadium Events, a highly sought-after collectors' item. But it wasn't even the game itself that was worth the bulk of the money -- it was the original cardboard box, which collectors value at a breathtaking $10,000. Fewer than 10 complete copies of the game are thought to exist, and retro gaming aficionados consider it one of the hardest-to-find NES games ever made.

Bet you're wishing you hadn't let Mom throw out your Nintendo collection now, eh?

-------------------------------------------------------------

Wow, for the original cardboard box of the game lol. Hope someday my ps2 games would be rare too like this one. lol.

Well, makes me glad that I'm holding onto my Nintendo Wii box as well as my X-box 360. Maybe in 20 years it'll be worth $10,000 too!

I've seen that game mentioned in Game Informer or EGM. What a waste of 13 grand. I mean seriously, it's a power pad game, probably not even playable by today's standard. I realize that's not the point, but really it kind of is. Who gives a crap about rarity if it's something that wasn't that good in the first place?

Also love the eBay account name.

Wow. The one time I used a power pad, a situation where my dad borrowed it from a neighbor, was playing that game.

I doubt our games will be worth this kind of money because know they could become collectors items someday. The whole idea is that the item has to be rare, and since a lot more of us probably tend to keep the boxes now there will be a lot more around. Its even worse for anything labeled as a collectors item, you can bet it probably won't be then. Case in point, the gold cart LoZ. I believe its worth the same or less than the grey one. I've seen less grey ones in my life than gold.

Extremely misleading title. That's like saying "I sold my NES for $20,000.", but not mentioning it came with one of those official gold Nintendo tounrament packs that there's only like a few hundred of in existance (the number is probably off, I haven't payed attention to the count in years). The console itself wasn't anymore special than the one any one else here owns.

This makes me want to buy a common system from this generation, and never open it. Then sell it in like 50 years.

Just so it's clear, I's not the NES, or most of the games that made the bids skyrocket it's 1 of the games - Stadium Events - and the fact that it is a complete copy (the cardboard box for Stadium Events - which is even more rare than the game cartridge, the manual, dust sleeve and cartridge all combined) that did it.

It seems less complete copies of this game exist than the cartridges (gold or gray) of the Nintendo World Championships 1990.

Compared to the one from the article, this one is a steal:

I would have to have a lot of money to spend if I am going to pay 13,000 for a NES and game, no matter how rare.

I guess if you have that kind of money just sitting around...sometimes I wish I had that problem.

I saw this earlier today. I'm not all that suprised if that game truly is as rare as they claim it is. I can't imagine what that game will be worth in 10 more years! :o

I don't know if I believe that to be the case. If you look up an N64, Dreamcast, or some of the limited edition Gameboys--like the PH gold one--they go for a pretty penny.

Also, I'm pretty sure that a sealed gold Ocarina cart is worth something, no?

Ugh. The mere thought of what this is going to do to NES sales on Craigslist or whatever other sites makes me go crazy. People who might not know all that much about game systems might see this story and go, "oh hey, I've got one of those in my attic, I should put it up on Craigslist for $1000, somebody will really be getting a steal!" :P

You saw alot of crazy overpriced 2600 auctions when Antique Roadshow placed the value of a 2600 at $100-$200, and people used the show to try and legitimize their price.... so I won't be too surprised when Craigslist goes crazy with NESes using this auction as a justification.

Don't bother, you can buy a Dreamcast for $35 American on ebay or Amazon.com it is not the consoles it is a few of the games that are collector items. Some of the consoles that did not sell well are hard to find and valuable now and most of the hard to find games were disposed of back in the day because they were crappy. I remember some of them because I played a few and I would not give a wooden nickel for them now because just being rare does not make a lousy game any better.

a true collector of crud - the good games are not that rare. The bad games were disposed of fast and there are not many of them left around, that is why they are rare and I would not pay a nickel for them when I had the console I don't think they are worth anything more just because they are older.

well if you read the only reason it sold for 10 thousand is bidding..

people kept bidding until it hit that mark , ,

its just luck of the draw that people have that much money on them especally to spend on such old hardware,

i dont think 360 will be any where as worthy as nes, seriously what makes you think 360s worth much now,

what a ripoff. and the article's title is incorrect. its actually an NES game that sold for $13,100. and they threw in the console for $5. but who would read an article about a crappy nes game that sold for $13k? It's as rediculous as this article about the 1 game that sold for $21k!

Looks like the Gold cart is worth about $35. I have a complete set of all the Zelda games except the the NES ones. Box, cart, manual. Thought my OoT manual is in terrible shape. Myabe it will be worth something somday. But just from a quick look it appears that both the grey OoT and original LoZ are worth slightly more money. I've never seen a grey Majora's Mask Cart (if they even made one) or a grey Zelda II cart. So there's really no telling. I would think the only games that will become worth oodles of money are very low production games that probably suck and didn't sell well.

I see now you said sealed. I think any sealed game will be worth a lot of money if its out of production.

True. Any regular person with no knowledge of gaming would probably turn their nose up at it if they spotted it for a few bucks at a garage sale. Then again, the true value of anything is determined only by how much somebody else is willing to pay for it.
