Which were some of the best racing games of the old generation consoles?
I will have to pick NFS Hot Pursuit 2 as first choice one of the best games for the PS2.
The second one is Gran Turismo 3 .

Some of my favourites (I'm not your hardcore racing game fan but I do love a few of them) some that are great are: Burnout 3: Takedown Burnout Legends (it's on the PSP and I know it's still going, but it was one of the first PSP games I believe and I think of PSP more along the lines of PS2 than PS3) Gran Turismo 2 (haven't played it for a very long time though, must be about 10 years now as I no longer own it) I can't think of any more at the moment... my other favourites are on the Xbox 360 so I'm not going to mention them.

Yea Burnout 3 is one of the best burnouts out there. For PSP surprisingly good was Ridge Racer, a hell of a fast game.

Ooh, yes of course Ridge Racer on the PSP! pretty good game too :D. I haven't played my PSP in a long time... I really should as there are some games I want. Everything about Burnout 3 was just epic... the graphics were cool as it was an arcade game, it was A LOT of fun, it was faaaast (gotta love fast cars), the tracks were awesome, the soundtrack was amazing! I loved most of the songs on there but sadly I was never able to play online as I never was able to hook up my PS2 to the internet... was it any good/better than Revenge's Xbox Live multiplayer? When Revenge first came out I was unsure about it... I mean I liked it, but there was no exhibition/free race option which I hated. But after a while I grown used to it as I never was able to 100% it (just yet, anyway... :P). The soundtrack was pretty sweet on there too, especially MxPx - Heard That Sound... epic song, fit the game perfectly. The only thing I have ALWAYS (even in Burnout 3) disliked about those games is Crash mode... I find it tedious, annoying and boring... but that's just me :P. My favourites are a tie between normal Race and Takedown mode... possibly Takedown mode.

Burnout 2 Point of Impact was the first burnout I ever played. I must say that it was one of the fastest games you will ever get to see. Well there were limited cars and tracks but the fun was beating the track records. As for soundtracks Burnout 3 was awesome but nothing beats NFS Hot Pursuit 2 soundtrack or NFS Underground. :D

I know that is a current gen game, but I must say that S/S is an awesome game! not quite as good as Burnout but very good!

Unfortunately, my copy of Burnout 2: Point Of Impact crashed every 5 minutes so I never really had a chance to play it... and so I can't remember much about it. Is it much different to Burnout 3? also what is Burnout 1 like? I was thinking about buying it recently.

Well you must get Burnout 1 if you like the burnout series. As for Burnout 2 there is a lot more to it than it looks. First of all it is a lot harder than any other Burnout game. I see GT2 was the Icon of racing in the PS era. Blur, Forza 3, mario cart wii are new gen games.

I played racing games- Turbo, Night Driver, Pole Position 1-2, Hard Drivin', Crusin' n USA, and many driving games that I couldn't remember. Favorites? tough ones, I enjoyed Cruis' n USA arcade, Gran Turismo, Sega Rally, and Test Drive. I planned to play Inital D arcade.

Awesome! will have to look in to buying it/them sometime soon then :D. I feel as though I should mention it actually... I haven't played Dirt 2 yet, but Dirt 1 is one of my favourite racing games ever, besides Burnout. It was just so fun... As for more classic games, I don't think you would really call it a racing game, probably more of a racing-action game... not many people liked it, but I loved WWE Crush Hour.

well when I read "old school" i thought back to NES and Genesis racers. PS2 is technically legacy, but not old school IMO. For me some of the best old school racers would be R.C. Pro-AM, Rad Racer, and Super Offroad for NES. and games like Outrun, Virtua Racing Deluxe (32x), and Road Rash II (sort racing, more like fighting on motorcycles though) on the Genesis.

Also Road Rash for the Sega Mega Drive... and I didn't play it too much as it was hard (but it was similar to WWE Crush Hour) it was a game where you go around destroying things... I believe it was in a city and you could do big jumps and stuff... it was a racing/action game I believe... it was on the PS1. Can anybody remember what it was called?

It's for PC but Fatal Racing (Whiplash) is easily one of my favorites. I loved those crazy courses.

On consoles... Cruis'n USA for N64. I don't know too many racing titles but I liked that one. The tank was awesome. In karts, Mario Kart for the N64 is the first one. The second one is Chocobo Racing. Don't know why the hate for it.

Super Off Road (NES) Super Mario Kart (SNES) OutRun (Sega Mega Drive) Destruction Derby 1+2 (PS1) Burnout 3 (PS2) Those are pretty much my favorites on those systems.
