I, too, love the older gen more. There was so much more originality, game designers weren't afraid to wander and explore new, unique and sometimes bizarre genres and styles, games weren't entirely looked at as moneymakers. I think just about everything was better for games back then. People didn't really care as much about the graphics, there was so much more storyline and depth, more replayability and just overall more fun. And one of the best parts about old games? There was no such thing as online play. Sure, I like online play as much as the next guy, but it seems the industry doesn't think that people have offline local friends anymore, removing splitscreen from just about every game you can think of. I'd rather sit side-by-side with my fiance of a buddy and kick some Foot ass on TMNT 3: The Manhattan Project. Or perhaps take turns getting owned by bullet swarms in Life Force. Maybe even work together to take down Jobe in The Lawnmower Man. Possibly just to goof around on GoldenEye and turn on invincibility and cover eachother in blood then running around like bloody meatsacks. I'd rather do all of that so much more than to keep killing my opposite color all day on a cramped map with a bunch of little kids screaming into my ear.

I agree. I miss the days when games were more about fun and not as mainstream. There are still some games I have a lot of fun with, but I still miss the days of playing video games as a kid.

Modern games are a lot more polished but they lack the enthusiasm that went into game development once. Just my two cents :)

Were there 'older gen' and 'newer gen' games or systems you specifically had in mind?

I'm thinking that times change, gaming tastes change and experiences that once might have "wowed" gamers may have just increased expectations to the level that when something is good but doesn't "wow" then it seems like a waste of time.

This gen, just like the last does have quite a few games that put the focus on graphics because game graphics tend to be the first thing people comment on, but there's only so much innovation developers can do before they simply can't come up with new ideas.

This. There are elements of past generations that I liked, but then there are elements I didn't like. Same goes for this generation. Times change, trends change, and game generations will reflect that. It's the same with film and music, there are always trends and changes. You just have to roll with it or ignore it I guess.

Asking this question in the Legacy Forum is a bit of a loaded question, as we all come here because we love older systems...

... I tend to agree that it's apples & oranges, but with that said, I think I personally tend to enjoy older systems and games because they weren't developed with online gaming as a focal point, and DLC as a revenue generator. Content was included on the disc and you either were given all of it or unlocked it as reward instead of a Pavlovian system of trophies or achievements and getting nothing but a bell ring to motivate replay value. It's a hollow reward; The Emperor wears no clothes! Pass it on!

Fighting, FPS, all MP content had to be done in the same room on the same screen (or LAN Parties) which I found to be infinitely more social than listening to someone hiding behind a screen name shouting racial slurs or other personal attacks. If you called me a N***** back in the day, I could smack the white off your teeth because you're sitting on my couch.

Wow, how could I forget this point? That was something I completely forgot to include. Back then, you got what you paid for and you didn't have to dish out another 20 bucks to "complete" your game or get the full experience. You HAD the full experience right in front of you. If you wanted more out of it, you could just cross your fingers for a sequel which usually came and it generally improved the game in every way. I hate that we have to spend more and more money just to unlock the last half or content that should be included but isn't. It makes me sick.

I don't agree at all. I've been playing games since the Atari 2600, and all systems have had their good and their crap games. If anything the Atari 2600 was the first console to sufer from shovel-ware crap (just like the Wii today, and the PS2 before it).

To me the old games or I call the the classics,Had more playability and interesting to play, I love games these days but it just seems it the same old thing like gaining XP,slow motion replays, stream after stream of un-original FPS games,Also on average 5-6 hours to finish a game,Which isnt long for a £40-$60 game.

games were smalller back then though. sure you got all the tracks in a racing game, but for the most part there were only a small selection of tracks. DLC is not anything new on the PC either.

Yes, but it also used to cost over $70 to buy cartridges which except for RPGs they were mostly short games.

What is older and newer gen? N64,PS1 was the best... PS2 era is second best... The older generations than the n64 era just suck (lol seriously simple 2d games? No way that crap is better).

I like current-gen games, but it's mostly been a disappointment so far. So many series I used to love have taken a huge step back this gen: Burnout, Race Driver (GRID), Resident Evil and GTA, just to name a few. And even though I've always liked online games, I hate how barely any games have split-screen these days...

There have been some great games this gen, but recently I've been playing older games a lot more.

I feel the same exact way man. I just cant help from being bored of black ops and playing mario 64. I feel like its mostly nostalgia, though; young gamers will probably miss this gen in 10-20 years

Well focuse has moved more to multiplayer, which is nice in some ways, but also kind of obnoxious if you just want to be alone and seems to have limited creativity and diversity in genres. I'm also kind of sad by how little developers have used modern hardware to really improve games. I was hoping to see games like bfield 3 with lots of destruction and physics all over the place this gen, or games with insanely massive worlds. Maybe the hardware just hasn't quite reached that point yet, but I think it's gotten pretty close.

My first home console was a PlayStation 2, my first console at all a Game Boy Advance. And Idefinately like the older gen more. You can feel the thought and imagination put into the game spilling out. That only happens every once in a while these days, in games like Elder Scrolls or Fallout, maybe Halo or something like that if you can really get into the story. But in older games, the art styles alone can sell the game in some cases. Games were truly a hard art to master, and you could appreciate iteven more. And they weren't so easy, either. Nowadays, your average game treats you like you have a mental disorder. Even the Elder Scrolls as I mentioned above, a game truly bent on exploration, puts a map marker on nearly everything you need to get to. Before, the way you got there was determined by who you talked to or who you didn't. Sometimes a game could be frustrating, but the game seemed to treat you as an intelligent being, in thatthe people who made it figured the player would be able to figure out a puzzle or find the right person.

Maybe I got a little carried away, but I think my point still stands. The older games tend to be way more imaginitive and rightfully difficult than today's average game.
