Why is there no built-in Wifi? It would seem like such an obvious feature to include, since even handhelds have it nowadays. I suppose the reason it was such a big deal with me, is that I would have to pay $100 for that adapter. I have my 360 connected in my oldest brother's room, and since he works a lot, he sleeps a lot in his room. The problem is that the router is in his room, so having the 360 there is the most comfortable format. Anyway, anyone understand with the wireless thing is so expensive?viewtiful26
The reason is simple... Microsoft wants to make money. What's a good way to make money? 1st-party accessories.
Sell an "online ready" console for $300, then charge you $50/year to actually play games online with it
Sell an "HD ready" console for $300, then charge you $150 for an add-on HD-DVD drive.
Microsoft makes a great deal of money selling its wi-fi adaptor for $100. If you want wireless, I'd recommend that you get your self a cheap wireless router ($40) and set it up as a wireless client. Then connect your 360 and any other devices you want on the network to that wireless client.
I'd speculate it was combination of a number of reasons including:
1. The price of the system would be slighlty higher with a wireless NIC built-in
2. Many of not most gamers (like myself) probably wouldn't even use it. Personally, I would've been unwilling to buy are G Router (and thats assuming a G NIC was built in) for gaming, and I anything slower than that is unacceptable for me. I can see how it could be convenient for LAN parties increased freedom of location, but for online gaming, I don't want the drop off in local data rate.
That's why I never bought a 360. It has cool games, but Microsoft really gets you with the extra stuff you need to buy for the system. They hit you with Xbox live monthly fee, quick charge and play and charge kits for your controllers, the 100$ wi fi adapter, HDMI or Component cables, and then you throw in the system cooling thing people buy to prevent their system from overheating. Considering that the Xbox 360 elite is like 70 bucks more than a PS3, and the PS3 comes with free online, free controller charge, built in WiFi it comes out to a lot more money for the 360. Microsoft is all about getting your hard earned dollars, and they've been doing it for years. Nephasth
In fairness, the cables Sony included with the PS3 were garbage (aka composite) whereas MS included component cables with the X360. Also, overheating doesn't make MS money, it costs them money since A) they don't manufacture any cooling systems and B) they repair the rrod for free.
I read somewhere, that if you cannot a 360 to an Wi-fi laptop, it can share the internet connection from there. I'm not sure if that's true though, I may try it later, since you'll have to change the computer's settings. Anyway, I would wireless connection to be helpful, since I have to have my ethernet cable go across my brother's room to reach the router, so it may be stepped on or hit with the vacuum or whatever. viewtiful26
Yes, you can do that. Its simply a matter of if the computer's OS has the functionality built-in, which Windows XP/Visa does. Not sure about basic Linux distros or Macs. Thats actually how I used to play my PS2 online before I had a router. I had a spare NIC that I installed in computer and used that to relay a wired connection to my PS2 with XP performing the networking. Its call Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)

getting cables for the ps3 is blown way way out of proportion though. HDMI's are six bucks for fantastic cables.
