Is when you can't decide what new game to buy.

This could be argued that this doesn't need to be in Legacy Platforms, but really, I feel that it does (I will get to that).

The reason being, it seems with retro games I have an harder time deciding what to buy with my money than newer games. I can sometimes spend days looking at the same few auctions on eBay, only to later see that the auctions that I keep going back to have eventually been ended because somebody brought them... then I kind of get angry with myself! LOL does anybody else go through this? :P

Take something right now for instance. I have my eye on a game, a few games in fact, and every other hour I will notice that the view count has gone up by a few... and if it ends up getting brought I will regret it (it's buy it now).

I don't know why I do this... well I do, but you know what I mean. it's either I buy what I want now, or I buy some other games. I am feeling all retro-ey at the minute. Take yesterday for instance, I REALLY regret not bidding on something. It was Medal of Honor and Underground Twin Pack for the PS1 in MINT condition and it was REALLY cheap... but I just didn't get it.

Does anybody else have this problem, or is it just me? :P

An example is you want a new game and you have about 10 different retro games in mind, yet you just let all these cheap auctions etc. slip you buy, no matter how rare they are and then eventually regret it :(.

That frustrates me alot too. But one thing that frustrates me even more, is HAVING money, and BUYING tons of games and ending up with a huge backlog of games you own but haven't touched, I have too many of those.

Be happy you still have that feeling. When you get older, priorities change, and frustration in regards to gaming is an ancient past time.

I am very indecisive when it comes to buying video games whether they're still at their release price or price drop. I try to do as much research as possible on each title I'm interested (reading reviews, watching gameplay clips, etc....), but the hard part is TWO great games and I have to decide on which one to get:( still, there are those games I know I'll definitely get which makes it easier.

For me the backlog of games is by far the bigger problem. I usually wait for games to decrease in price, and then when they do I go out and buy a few of them.

To be honest (not to brag) my collection for C64, NES, Amiga 500/1200 (what I consider legacy) is pretty much complete. All software and hardware were bought in its own time and my collection pretty much built itself. The attic is "mine"; it's stuffed to the brim with computers, software, odds... everything I´ve found in the past 30 years.

I hate people that overcharge for retro games (Super Mario Bros for $15, TMTA for $30, Sonic the Hedgehog for $15, you get the idea)

just got my first job a month or two ago (i'm 19, been job searching since 15 so cut me some slack) and directly across the street from my work is a gamestop. i've already picked up like fifteen games, but i still have at least a dozen half-completed games from before. backlogging sucks, but i still browse the hell out of amazon/ebay. The overpriced situation is also pretty lame, i know a store thats loaded with NES games but its 10+ a cartridge.

There are many times when I could have bought some great Retro Stuff. Hesitated and miss the chance. I could have bought a NES 2 original Top loader. But I waited and didn't buy it. when I went back to the store the next day. The top loader was gone.

Plus this has happened with games, Irugara, Tengen Tetris, Parasol Stars, Sometimes if you hesitate you miss out.

Mostly I snap games and other things I'm looking for right away.

I'm in a new renaissance of aquisition at the moment, but really only games that are below $10... That way I can walk out with a few cases in my hands for the money spent. I've made some amazing scores lately, and I look at it as a marathon instead of a sprint.

:)

There are a BUNCH of games I've been eyeing, and I know the feeling Ashley. But at the same time, I know I'm watching a bunch of titles that not a lot of people are probably eyeing, being as they are usually older or more obscure... And it's kind of like gambling. How long can you let something sit on a shelf without it being poached?

I usually don't get frustrated when buying retro games, as they're usually pretty cheap and I mostly buy them on a whim. If something is cheap and looks interesting, I'll probably get it. I do have a much harder time when deciding to buy games for my PS3 though.

Condition is important and certainly the better, more complete the condition, the greater the price. However, we're talking people asking twice what a game is worth because they assume that it is ultra rare just because it's old. There's this old crone at a flea market I go to who thinks NES games are filled with diamonds or something because she tries getting $30 for Super Mario 3, $20 for Batman, and I think she wanted like $15 for Tetris. She irritates the crap out of me, as do other people who substantially overcharge for video games.

A word of advice if you see something at a good price get it. Because if you don't you may never see it at that price again. I passed up on a few good deals only to kick myself in the ass later. I had a chance to get Pikmin 2 for $10 and Zelda TP on Gamecube for $5. I passed on both and I still regret it.

No, no, the problem is the backlog for me. I already know what I want to purchase before the games are released.

I know exactly what you mean. I collect NES games and I usually buy them by the lot. Thing is, I try to control how much I am willing to spend per game. I've seen a lot of great boxes of NES games go for only a buck or two over what I was willing to pay. Missed out on some great rares that way. The up-side is that retro games are going to stay relatively cheap for awhile (with the exception of the rares). So even though you didn't get the best deal doesn't necessarily have to count you out of the purchase all together. Hang in there. *fistbump*

My backlog is definitely the bigger problem, but I have run into this as well.

Recently for example, I saw UMK3 for Genesis at a game store, in the case for like $10. Passed on it at the time because I had a stack of games in hand. Went back to that store later, gone. Found it at only one other store in the city. No case, no manual, $30. Begrudgingly, I bought it because I didn't want to wait to track it down again.

I just buy the newly released games I have in mind and keep them ordered in a pre-set "To Play" list. For example, I now have Tales of Legendia and the 3 Xenosaga games. Along with Ace Combat on the 3DS. None of them are really temptive enough to prioritize beating first so I came up with the following order:

Legendia >>> Xenosaga I,II,III >>> Ace Combat

The only game that's in demand in the used market is Ace Combat, so I'll sell that once I beat the main campaign. I also have no games on my anticipation list until August (Kingdom Hearts 3D), so there's not much pressure to beat those games. I may take "breaks" between Xenosaga's episodes though. The main factor that could prolong my playtime on a game is the fact that I only invest time on them during weekends.

So yeah, once you adopt a systematic approach to the process, it's simple and not frustrating much. I don't spend a substancial amount of income on games though (I borrowed Legendia).

Be happy you still have that feeling. When you get older, priorities change, and frustration in regards to gaming is an ancient past time.

Heirren

The biggest problem with me as I grow older is not which games to buy necessarily, but which games I will even have the time to play. I play a ton of sports games lately because I don't have the time to invest in any other kind.

Handheld gaming is where it's at for us job-having, home-owning senior citizens of the gaming community. Nothing like being able to snap the clamshell shut on a DS or flip the switch on a PSP at any moment and then pick up at that exact moment where you left off later that day or in a few days. I don't often find a chance to sit and game for two hours straight but I can get in twenty minute bursts in a few times per day.

i couldnt agree with you more.

cuz when a full time job, wife&kids, and bills come into play, gaming slowely becomes non excistent :(
