I find the whole naming of Collectors' Editions to be kind of a joke. Since few of them have limited runs, you can still buy them years after a game's release, and their value doesn't increase over time as most collectors' items do.
That being said, sometimes they can be worth it. The Assassin's Creed II one doesn't look bad, with the figurine, art book, etc. It's priced $20 above the standard, which is reasonable. The really objectionable ones are like Halo 3, where they sold you the game with an ugly, miniature plastic replica of the Spartan helmet, for something like $120. That's just pulling the old P.T. Barnum - A fool and his money are soon parted.
I've only bought the Oblivion one, because BestBuy was trying to get rid of it, and were selling it at the same price as the regular one. I'm going to get MW2 Hardened Edition. I needCoD for the 360.
No I don't think so. I don't see any reason why any game can't come out with a Collector's Edition if they want to.
It's not like they're holding a gun to your head telling you to use your hard-earned cash on it
COLLECTOR'S EDITION is considered collectible according to the consumer. Therefore if you don't find it to be quite worth collecting, don't buy it.Iceman8012This...
and This. OP seems butt hurt over the nothing. Don't want it don't buy it. My issue with Collector's Editions is that they are worthless. A special edition of a CD comes with more music, cuz you listen to music. Special editions of movies come with more movie content, because you watch movies. Special editions of games don't come with more stuff to play. The only worthwhile Special/Limited/Collectors edition was Jade Empire. It came with another character class that you couldn't get otherwise. Even with that, nothing about them annoys me. I just buy the regular version. It's not like they're holding a gun to your head telling you to use your hard-earned cash on it

Well i cant really agree with you if you want to buy it buy it as not every game appeals to you like for instance i ordered the bat man collectors edition and my freinds cudnt understand why vice versa with cod mw2 i dont see the attraction however i have cancelled my order as the collectable batarang that was supposed to be made of matal as advertised has now been changed to plastic as i learned earlier today making it pointless spending £60 on it.
Its completely up to the publisher to create games with a CE version or not. I'd imagine that in a decade or two, that mint condition of Halo 3 with the helmet and in original packaging is going to be worth quite a lot.
The idea here is that the object is targeted directly at hardcore fans of a series or new IP. But anybody can get it for at least a short period of time. And once again, if you don't feel its worth it, then don't buy it. Nobodies forcing you.
Unless they offer something truly compelling and unique (see: Biohazard 5th anniversary collection) "Collector's Editions"/"Limited Editions" are rip-offs. They're nothing more than a tactic companies use to part gullible consumers away from even more of their money. All you get with most of them are a "behind the scenes" DVD (and if you've seen one of those you've seen them all), different box art, maybe a different box altogether, and half the time a small, cheap artbook. Yep, totally worth $10-20 more. I especially love the irony in the "Limited Edition" games when I find them still being sold new three years later.
Something else to point out is that it is not collectors who are buying these special editions. Since they very rarely have limited runs there's nothing that makes them more valuable other than the fact that they cost $10 more at release. In fact, sometimes it's the standard edition that's the more valuable of the two (excellent example would be Viva Pinata. The special edition could be found everywhere. The normal edition was a rarity).
So yeah, maybe no one is forcing people to buy this crap but that doesn't mean it isn't all still crap. Worse is that people's habits of blindly buying special editions does have a negative impact on the rest of us. Last gen publishers used special editions to test the market in order to see if consumers were willing to pay $10 extra for games. The sales said "yes" and here we are today with $60 games. Considering special edition sales don't appear to be slowing down we could very well be looking at $70 games next gen.
