What do you think of Tekken? I think its a great game.(better than virtual fighter!) and does anyone know when Tekken 6 is coming out? I don't think gamespot spends a lot of time on it.

I don't like the way Tekken plays.
From the competitive videos I've seen, characters dance around. Then when someone gets close, someone messes up and gets into a juggle. Then the juggle ends, they space out and repeat.
I don't like the emphasis on combos.
I'd rather play Soul Calibur and CvS2 or third strike.
Tekken didn't really become big until my local arcade scene was dead. A Virtua Fighter player from the moment it hit arcades, I was actually very excited to get my hands on the game that could actually be more popuiar. Then I finally did...
"What the hell is this crap?"
The original Tekken...let's just say it failed to impress me. It had a large character roster, but with an anemic movelist, stiff controls, and mechanics that were "less than fluid" at best, I felt like I was playing Rock-em Sock-em Robots: The Game. My opinion of Tekken 2 was similar when it came out, but at least it had some movelist depth and a little style going for it. Still, I lost a lot of respect for the North American fighting fans. "They're playing this crap over Virtua Fighter?"
Tekken 3 was a good game to me. It had more depth than the previous titles, and a more fluid sense of motion. It also no longer felt like the characters were being pushed toward each other, making it more friendly to my general style of play in the fighting genre. I didn't prefer it to the closely-timed Virtua Fighter 3, which introduced even more depth, varied environments, and a similar evasion mechanic, but I could respect Tekken 3. That's the first Tekken game I could feel any sort of interest in.
Tekken Tag Tournament was a good next step, and one I particularly found interesting because it came along around the same time as the first Marvel vs Capcom, back when that series was actually good. I like the tag mechanic when it isn't too over-the-top, and Tekken Tag Tournament got a lot of my playtime as a result.
I still played VF3 more.
Tekken 4, despite how others felt, was a big surprise to me - the good kind. It felt like Namco made a big push to give the Tekken series a rock-solid identity in terms of gameplay, where the first few games actually felt a little generic (despite Tekken 3/Tag's movement). I also felt, and still feel to this day, that there were elements thrown into Tekken 4 to give it a manufactured (but still beautiful) sense of 2D nostalgia. Specifically, there were parts of it that really brought back feelings of playing Super Street Fighter II Turbo and King of Fighters '99. This was the first Tekken I really took seriously...but again, I still liked Virtua Fighter more.
Tekken 5/Dark Resurrection did almost everything right, but I would have liked to have seen Tekken 4's sidestepping mechanic rather than what they went with (3/Tag's with the slow walk tacked on afterward). I still played it quite seriously, which culminated in a Pacific North divisional title in 2005. Marduk FTW.
And I still preferred Virtua Fighter, even though I was a better Tekken player at this point.
Tekken 6 worries me unless they either ditch item-based attacks, or gimp them into the dirt.

You should watch me play sometime (I'll have to rip the tournament videos I've been sitting on from two years ago). My highest combo is four hits, and my main objective is to basically set up to choke people out. In a game loaded with combo whores, I'm methodical and tactical.

Hell yeah, man, pull those up. I've always felt the same as Rev concerning Tekken. It's not that I don't see how others could enjoy that fighting system, but it just never appealed to me. I'll take SoulCalibur 2 over it any day.And I don't know if you recall, but I got really interested in VF4 Evo as a result of one of these fighting game threads you were very vocal in. Without question, it's the best 3D fighter out there (well... how's 5?), and I wish more people would try to understand it. It's not that hard.

Glad I was there to introduce you to the ownage that is Virtua Fighter. :)
VF5...depends entirely on what you're looking for.
If you're playing competitively with other people, it's much better than Evo.
If you're new to the series (obviously not you in that case) or spend most of your time on single-player, you won't get as much out of it. The badass tutorials are gone and the AI is...not weak, just kinda lame. It's more stereotypical as far as fighting game AI goes, it's not based on real players for the most part, although it claims to be (Jonas is even in there, sort of).
Dunno...I'd call VF5 better at the end of the day, but others might disagree. It's the only one that really matters today, that's for sure.
I'll see about getting a VCR set up for those T5 vids. It's not direct feed since I'm not set up for that, and it's not representative of how I was playing when I won that division title, but it'll give you an example of my playstyle.
But I'm sure you'll be refreshed to see an admittedly solid Steve passed out in a puddle of his own drool without even eating any big combos. :)
I think that Tekken has the potential to sweep the 3d fighter competition. Seriously.
I don't say that because I think it looks the coolest or has the best characters. I think that it has the most immersive fighting system out of the current main titles on the market (Fight Night is the only other game which I'm contemplating with besides Tekken). I'm speaking of Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive, and yes, even Soul Calibur (well...Soulcalibur now).
Almost every move is done by pressing the button that moves a certain limb (two buttons for two arms and two for the legs, specials are more complicated, etc.).
Besides the "pop-up" mechanic that I hope is fixed someday (5-7 hit air combos that aren't part of the moves list. They know.)..I don't have any problem with the system and I see it as very balanced.
Out of any fighting game's battle system besides Fight Night and Soul Calibur-...*sigh*...Soulcalibur, I see Tekken's being integrated into fluid motion sensing technology.

Combos always exist outside the movelist. That's why they're combos and not strings. It's not going to be "fixed" because it's not something they didn't intend.
Tekken will never take the step into motion-sensing because it's a traditional arcade-style fighting game. It'll never do anything that isn't tied to the arcade stick and buttons. Motion sensing isn't precise enough to fit with high-level Tekken play.
As for being the top 3D fighter, it first has to develop a greater depth and level of expertise than Virtua Fighter, and it seems the team at Namco isn't even interested in doing that (nor is the general playerbase).
Ya I think that its not just the fighting but the story which makes it a great game. I wouldn't spend 650 dollars just to get it either, but I still think its a great game. It can be for either the arcade-buttin mashing type or people who like to perfom various moves.I also enjoy the different ways of fighting they have in the game. Although I do agree with some people on the fact that the older ones were better. Its like there at a pont where they can't get anything else out of kazuya, jin, or heichi(however you spell it) so now they hae to add new evil people like jinpachi or just repeat itslef and have jin go on a devil rampage and beat up kazuya or whoever and then fly off.
Overall its a great game. Not worth all that money. But great.
And did sony actually decide to drop the price on the ps3

I dont think those will be used much (if at all) in high level play. Or maybe just as juggle enders.
Even though it's not as balanced and deep as VF, I like Tekken because of the clear, anime-style impact powerful hits have. Plus, it features a good variety of fighting styles and it can get deep enough for a hardcore fan. I agree with Dark Catalyst about Tekken 4. It seemed like a step in the right direction, but the fans kept it from becoming something more. Tekken 5 was a return to traditional, controlled fighting, with an attrocious emphasis on juggles. It's still lots of fun though.
My favourite series in the 3d arena is still Soul Calibur, though.
Namco has crafted a very solid fighting game with Tekken. It is fast, easy to play, has good characters, and the series features Tag-Team play. Overall, it is one of my favorite fighting games. Tekken 3 in particular really dominated my playing hours for some time... it is a classic.
I really wish they would make a Tekken Tag Tournament 2 game though.Archangel3371I think TTT2 will be made eventually. Perhaps it will be the next Tekken game after T6.
does anyone know when Tekken 6 is coming out?
thrasher1234
Arcades this year. PS3...maybe this year or 2008.
As for the game, I'm really skeptical of it. I don't like the idea of item moves and the new characters don't excite me all too much (except for Prince...I mean Miguel). However, I'm liking they're improve the customization aspect, adding online play and pretty much including every popular Tekken character ever. That being said, I'm looking forward to it extensively (long-term Tekken player, though I've been branching into VF...so good). Also, I've been wanting to try the DR characters (excluding Armor King).
Just reading your comments about your history with Tekken, DC. I'm surprised you consider Tekken 4 to be good. I always considered it to be a low point of the series (far too slow, but then again, you're a VF player, so you're used to that). Can't wait to see your Tekken 5 vids, I've always wanted to see what gave you that tournament win...
