What are some of the best original Game Boy/GBC games that still hold-up to this day?

I was never a big handheld gamer back in the day since home console were so ahead of handheld devices back then. But now with the GBA-SP at my disposal as well as the Gameboy Player on Gamecube at home, it's become a lot more appealing to me. Both the GBA-SP and Gameboy Player make the games look 10x better than they ever did on the original Game Boy and even much better than they looked on the Gameboy Color. Plus I have a lot of time to kill at work lately so I need some good games.

My picks:

  • Bionic Commando: Elite Force
  • Dr. Mario
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
  • The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages
  • The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons
  • Mega Man Xtreme
  • Operation C
  • Super Mario Bros. Deluxe
  • Super Mario Land 1 & 2
  • Tetris

What else is out there that is "great" that I missed?

TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan Castlevania: the adventure 1+2 Metal Gear: Solid Megaman series The other ones I was going to list are already on your list. Watch out for Bionic Commando, though- I've bought three different copies of the game and they all froze at the same point(about 2 levels in).

Seiken Densetsu is the japanese name for the Mana series(Secret of Mana, Sword of Mana, Legend of Mana), not Final Fantasy.

Seiken Densetsu is the japanese name for the Mana series(Secret of Mana, Sword of Mana, Legend of Mana), not Final Fantasy.

First rule of thumb donot correct some one when they are already correct. It seems you donot know what your talking about, and I suggest next time you correct me you actually do research. Let me educate you. First and foremost, Seiken Densetsu:Fainaru Fantaji Gaiden the original was released here as Final Fantasy Adventure. This was the original Seiken Densetsu which is the first in the Mana Series. We got it here as Final Fantasy Adventure. This was a game boy game, and it was a brought over here under that title. The sequel Seiken Densestu 2 was brought over here as Secret of Mana. We never got Seiken Densetsu 3 obviously. Also Sword of Mana is a remake of the original Seiken Densestu,

Sorry but you have no idea what your talking about. Donot correct me when I was right. You are wrong sir, and it is quite obvious your the one who should do research. Have a nice day! And just for your consideration, if you donot want to take my word for it, enjoy the link. Have a nice day!

So much anger, yet understandable...

I'm surprised no one mentioned the Pokemon games. Gold/Silver/Crystal holds up really well :)

Cool add-on, but I don't think it holds up I guess. The printer portion was cool at the time!

Heirren

I always wanted this game :(

Here's mine:

Avenging Spirit

One of the most solid and best platformers that I've ever played

Kid Dracula

Without this game, we would have never had Castlevania SOTN :)

  • Bionic Commando: Elite Force
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
  • The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages
  • The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons
  • Mega Man Xtreme
  • Operation C
  • Super Mario Bros. Deluxe

Emerald_Warrior

I agree these for sure. I would add Bomberman Max, Metal Gear Solid, and Metroid 2.

My favorite GBC game is a port though, which is Crystalis.

My picks:

  • Super Mario Land 1 & 2

Emerald_Warrior

Super Mario Land may be an adequate platformer for the Game Boy, but you've got to admit it looks seriously screwed up. Mario is huge compared to the blocks, enemies are tiny, the fireballs look nothing like in Super Mario Bros. but rather like soccer balls in shape, the animation is sparse and ugly, etc. Sure, they wanted to squeeze it all into a lower resolution, but the result is that everything looks seriously disproportionate. The game controls slightly worse than Super Mario Bros. too - not that I think that there was anything at all wrong with the controls in SMB. I see little reason to pick it over SMB, SML2, SMBDX or pretty much any other Super Mario game, but maybe it compares favourably to most of the other Game Boy platformers out there, I don't know.

Huh?! I completely disagree! The Super Mario Bros control fomula is about as simplistic as it gets. Me thinks you're just being critical just to be critical. Super Mario Land/Bros....Are you serious?!

Still, it never felt as responsive as Super Mario Bros. to me. And yeah, they clearly didn't do much to distinguish Super Mario Land from SMB. Super Mario Land 2 was better in that regard - and then Wario Land came along.

Is it better to be uncritical not to criticise, by the way? (Not that I think that I am critical for the sake of criticism alone.)

Crystalis is one incredible game. It is seriously one of the best action-RPGs I have ever played, STILL to this day. SNK really did something special when they made that masterpiece. It's too bad they pretty much focused on fighting games only after that and completely abandoned RPGs entirely. I play it on the NES, though.

it was only black & green but Metroid II the Return of Samus is well worth the 25 cents it'll cost you if you can find it, still to this day one of the best handheld games ever made IMO.

I played through Pokemon Red around a year ago and it's held up very well, the only real problem is inventory management.

Dragon Quest I and II and DQ III are classic. I also thought that the Pokemon Trading Card Game was one of the best video game translations of a CCG I've played.

Metroid II is a really fun original Game Boy game that I still play quite often.

Samslayer

I need to replay that sometime. It is still my favorite Game Boy game. Brought a lot of improvements to the table, and set the stage for Super Metroid to improve the formula/ controls/ etc even more. Also worth mentioning in this thread are Solar Striker, Quarth, Link's Awakening, and R-Type DX.
