Other gameplay elements more important than graphics next gen.

I am satisfied with the level graphics are now (PS3 & 360). For next gen I wouldn't really care if there wasn't a big jump in graphics.

Right now what I am looking for is improved physics (very important to me for some reason), improved A.I. ( also important to me), more interactivity with the environment (really important to me), character animation, MMO-like online games and immersive game worlds.

Am I one of the few who feels like this? Are most of you looking for a big jump in graphics or do you feel the same.

I am also hoping for all systems to have quad/ multicores (please Nintendo, at least a quad core) so that devs will be able to have more things going on screen while you are playing.

Graphics are at a good place right now. I want to see the same things you're talking about. Just an overall higher level of polish, less bugs, faster loading times, better framerates...

The things you're talking about remind me of Oblivion or Fallout. The framework is there, but more time on animations and performance would make them perfect.

I'll come right out with it - there is really no need for a next-gen for the forseeable future. Graphics drive hardware increments, and it's hard to imagine a truly meaningful (like $400 meaningful) graphical improvement to the PS3 and 360 at this time. For all intents and purposes, the Kinect and Move have replaced the actual generational shift for Microsoft and Sony. There is room for Nintendo to catch up, but they have little incentive to with the Wii staying as strong as it is. Everything you listed can be done on the current consoles, it just takes a design team ambitious enough and willing enough to go all in for what would be an absolutely MONSTROUS development cycle for a lot of that. No need to replace the PS3 and 360 until they can be replaced by systems that offer actual photorealistic visuals at a reasonable pricepoint. These $400+ price tags aren't going to fly in this economy, so that may be quite awhile.

software>hardware, enough with half finished games coming out of publishers, i want to pop in a game without glitches and major bugs, if i have to sacrifice graphics than so be it, at least it polished gameplay wise

I like controlling/altering my environment on a whim especially the clouds/winds/weather/visibility and time of day/seasons. The only game that does that satisfactorily enough for me is FSX. But other games such as the upcoming GT5 for the PS3 are starting to do the same although not at the same level (yet) as FSX. It's a good start and bodes well for the next-gen. It probably won't be too long before console game options get as detailed.

*Shrugs* With every hardware generation, everything improves across the board, which seems to be what you are asking for (more stuff going on onscreen and better animation falls under the category of graphics). Anyway, I don't think that most console designers are anywhere close to maxing out the current generation of hardware (most seem to stay within the confines of UE 3.0) and the few who do push the hardware claim there is more they can do, so in the near future, I don't see any need for a new generation of systems.

Those of you who are content with current generation console graphics, should reconsider your thoughts on graphics improvements for the next generation. Yes, the leap from the previous generation to the current one is greater than that between any previous leap. However, graphics can certainly benefit from an improvement in video memory and overall graphics processing. Current generation console games tend to have weak textures and extremely poor anti-aliasing. Also, most of them are sub-Full HD. Hence, I disagree. I think that graphics could still use an improvement. For example, a lot of people say Killzone 3 looks really good. I've seen some of the footage and the first thing that I take notice of are the weak/ flat textures.

I feel we need more offline replay value, more control over certain things (heres looking at you, fight cutscenes), better music/sounds, and a bit more "playground" games like GTA.

yes i agree with you 105%. we don't need next gen xbox720, ps4, wii2hd. AND I DON'T WANT/NEED PS4. i am extremely satisfied with the way things are now. they just have to focus at making at better gameplay mechanics, the graphics is already there and it's just easy to polish/improve it. gameplay matters the most improving.

all they have to do is take the gameplay mechanics from ps2 or xbox then combine it with the graphics we have today, then boom!, it's a win win situation.

i don't know if that's possible or it looks very hard for developers to do but if it's possible it's gonna be the most amazing thing ever in gaming history.

I'm also comfortable with the level of graphics quality right now. For next gen consoles, instead of upping the quality of graphics dramatically, I hope to see developers using better hardware to improve things like physics, AI, immersion of game worlds, interaction with environments/characters, ect. It seems like (this gen) when developers spend so much time polishing the visuals they don't have room to polish the other things that were mentioned. Great thread by the way TC :)

Yea i'm with you there. More split screen co-op would be nice. Also more sandbox games should have co-op in them!!! I was really disappointed when i found out Just Cause 2 didn't have any co-op. I mean it's 400 square km's to explore!

Besides that i'd like to see better voice acting and less whiny characters. Just bought Phantasy Star Portable 2 and i have to say that Emilias voice is one of the most annoying i've heard.
