Looking for other RPGs with something similar to the sped up automated battles of Bravely default, or another mechanic which removes the labour of grinding.

Used to play loads of jRPGs but now I simply don't have the time for the random encounters

JRPG and no grinding ? I don't think that exist ... even in Bravely Default you have to grind and the combat is so slow they had to put the thing to make it faster.

as auto battle all Square RPG have them

Any RPG has some sort of grind. The only one I can really think of where you don't absolutely need to grind is Chrono Trigger.

xenoblade X has little grinding. you are generally out to do something and levelling up is somehting that just happens along the way.

although the game is massive (135 hours and counting) it also doesnt take an age to do something. the missions are generally short and even if you just pop out to explore mira you will generally tick something off the list in a short stint.

@osan0: I disagree with that (although I'd still recommend XCX).

While Xenoblade X doesn't really need grinding for levels, half of the missions involve "kill x enemies" or "gather x rare drops from enemies", which basically amounts to the same thing.

Oh, and then there are missions where you literally have to wait around for things to happen - like waiting for it to randonly rain over one specific area, or waiting for your mining network to gather particular things.

Ya i agree with Chrono Trigger, practically no need to grind in that game, same goes with Chrono Cross.

@Planeforger: if you are just picking a kill X enemies type mission and going out to do that then its not very efficent. usually i pick a load of those types of quests then have a different type of mission as my focus. if i just so happen to come accross the enemy i need to kill then great...dead enemy (or dead me...mostly dead me :P). i will come accross them eventually anyway.

same with the gathering quests. i dont think i ever went out with the sole purpose of gathering X number of an item. i just collect all the shiny things i come accross on my way to my destination and can knock off a few of those quests (i also just sometimes check the quest board. by collecting shinies i come accross i may already have other missions done too).

usually im out completing an affinity quest or mission or im looking to get another data probe or 3 planted and these are all things that can be done pretty quickly and with a small bit of itme investment. i think the longest quest i ever focused on was 2 hours (it was one hell of a trek accross oblivia) but most of those quests can be done in 30 to 45 min stints.

Shin Megami Tensei IV is fairly light on grinding, and has battles go VERY fast thanks to hyper aggressive mechanics, but is difficult enough that you may have to try more than one to defeat certain bosses, most notably the early ones (minotaur/medusa).

One of the hallmarks of JRPGs is to waste your time, so good luch with that. I've been playing Blue Dragon on 360 lately and while there are no random battles and you can beat the game without doing a portion of the game, the game takes your time in other ways, like backtracking and so many lootable objects that you'll be shocked how much time you spend looting (it's insane).
