Haze, blue dragon, Lair... such games. I'm not going to name any of those blockbusters (Halo 3, GTA 4 for example) because those games deserve a lot of hype. Also, they deliver. They're all undeniably great games, and come on,
"GTA 4(nothing special just remake of Gta 3 with nice visuals and effects)"
Have you played the game? I have, and I know that pretty much every game mechanic from GTA 3 was changed and improved. That's why half of the reviewers gave it a ten.
You can almost take every game with a average rating above 9.0,because most didn´t earn it and been just a result of the big hype around them. The real quality of a game shows around 1-2 Months of the release.
For me it´s
Half-Life 2 nice made but unbeliveable boring.I don´t see any storyline after driving a boat, going through a Zombie/Alien-infected town and theres still not any exitement coming up.Not a bit.I never played a FPS that felt so aimless.
Halo 2 : Taking full price for a game that not only short,it´s missing the parts they promised...simply unfinished and no replay value.
The Zelda-3D-parts : Starting with the acceptable OoT,the game continued to be pretty simple...in the 2D-parts it worked out,OoT bored me quicker then any other part.WW was a nice Idea and well made, they just forgot that only making the beginning of a game interesting fools people first but not for long.TP looked awesome...as long as you don´t look at the terrible villager-design.In par with the fact that gaming evolved since OoT,but the game didn´t.Too bad, could have been really good.
Mario 64/SM Sunshine : Mario 64 wasn´t bad but I think the game disappointed me from day one.It felt like they forced something that they couldn´t accomplish, the graphics had been far from stunning but the basic gameplay worked. That´s something SM Sunshine can´t say.It really tries to be Mario 64,but if Mario whouldn´t be the main character nobody whould care about this one.If the camera whouldn´t be so unbeliveable horrible,it whould be at least much less frustrating.
Shadow of the Colossus : After skipping this gae for a long time, because the first impression was horrible,I came to play and finish it.Not totally bad,but if the game-design is good but the graphics are flimmering so much that it destroys every single beatiful moment, the Storyline doesn´t tell you anything (and no the enviroments don´t do,too) and you only ride 5 Minutes from Boss to Boss...honestly,this game is overhyped for stuff that it simply isn´t.The Bossfights are great (exept the camera and the faults in the colision detection..stuff liek that) but that´s simply all about the game and I don´t think the game gives you anything else just because the commercial says so.No feel of lonliness (you didn´t care, because the next boss was already there),no outstanding gameplay (the faults had beem frustrating),no great graphics (the tearing and blur-stuff hurts in the eyes, big enviroments aren´t everything).
I could add more games to the list, like Gears of War (simply put: A good game, but the weak MP and the Short SP don´t live up the hype) or Tekken 5 (unbalanced, most unpleasing controls ever) but I thnk it´s already egnough ;)
Wow. A few Shadow of the Colossus mentioners. Am I the only one who thinks it's a masterpiece?
I personally would have to say Halo 3 was a tad over hyped because Call of Duty 4 kicked its butt.
Also, I think GTAIV was over hyped and overrated since it didn't sell 360's or PS3's like everyone thought it would and because I think people said it didn't match the sales of the previous ones like San Andreas.
