In their Crystal Ball section of the latest OXM there are rumors that Zenimax (ID, Bethesda, Arkane parent) may purchase Obsidian.

On one hand the studio would have a solid backing and on the other hand the studio won't be able to float around taking projects from the likes of Squaresoft, Sega, Atari anymore.

Would not surprise me. Zenimax has been on a shopping spree lately, but the idea of a collaborative project of Bethesda Softworks (Overall RPG idea, open-world concept), ID Software (a new open-world engine) and Obsidian (mainly RPG elements and writing/scripting) seems mouthwatering for fans.

What would Happen to Dungeon Siege III that is coming out. I don`t think that Zenimax will not purchase Obsidian but Square Enix will because they need a western studio that know their stuff when it comes to rpg`s.

I would think Obsidian would finish DSIII, SquareEnix would retain the rights to DS and that would be the last time Obsidian would work with Square. Still waiting to see what games come out of Zenimax now that these purchases have been made.

I think it would be a good acquisition. Obsidian are a bunch of tortured geniuses that just need a fair bit of management, guidance and proper backing. Merely having Avellone as some sort of advisor wouldnt hurt either for Bethesda as Obsidian has what Bethesda lacks, plus the fact that Bethesda allowed Obsidian to handle the Fallout franchise shows their support, appreciation and trust for the studio and its members--who worked on the early Fallout games.

Though, once Raven Software gets dropped or closed by Activision, I expect Zenimax to purchase that team as well.
