Ya I now its the parents decision and they know there son/daughter better then any one else, but to be honest it is really stupid to buy a M rated game to anyone that is like 8 or 10(except for Halo). Now by like age 13 and above the child has matured some more, and can handle most M rated games, and pretty much at age 15 they can handle all M rated games. Once again it is all up to the parents and they have the final decision on which games to buy.

i think parents should know how responsible their kids are. if a ten year old kid wants to play an M-rated and is very mature. there is no objection.

and sometimes a brother/sister has an M-rated game that a little kid plays or watches.

overall kids should play what they want (with parent permission)

but that will never happen

People need to figure out that games aren't reality. Unless your kid has a distorted perception of reality, then there is no need to worry. Obviously buying a 5 year old GTA isn't smart, but really a ten year old understands things to a good enough extent to be good with most movies and games. The only thing I'd be worried about a ten year getting into is porno in the entertainment department.

I agree. Pre-teens are in the top 3 of worst people to encounter online.

Although I think it depends on who the kid is. Personally, I was playing Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct, and the old GTAs when they were out on SNES and PS1 respectively. And my parents let me play them because I was really smart and mature for my age. Other kids however aren't.

That was a different era of gaming as well. Now they all have headsets and go online and start singing and screaming and shouting out insults that they don't know the meaning of. Even if I'd wanted to do that, I wouldn't have been able to back when I was little.

Ifparents play the game with them, and talk through how it is for fun and not real its ok. I played Doom when I was very small my mom and dad would play with me and sometimes deathmatch. Now im grown up I only go on a murderous killing spree every few months :P . I think the problems develop when the parents just sit children in front of games without supervision to get them out of the way.

No. If my parents only ever bought me games within the age rating it says on the box then I'd have missed out on oh so many awesome games. Miss out on Grand Theft Auto? STFU!

I disagree. I think it's the parents job to be able to determine how responsible, and intelligient their kids are before buying any game for them. I can tell you right now my first PC games were Freddi Fish, and Half Life, and I was 9 years old I believe :P I continued on with getting M rated games for birthdays, and when I could buy them, and I turned out ok. I hardly use swear words, I don't insult people, I don't find the idea of shooting, or breaking things to be entertaining. I graduated high school, passed with high honors on major tests, and whatnot, and am going to college to pursue a major in Geology. I don't think my parents would ever say that the games I played had a negative affect on my childhood. That's not to say there are kids that should NOT be allowed to have those games out there, but it's all about responsibility. If your 10 year old son loves to backtalk, argue, break stuff, and throw tantrums you should not find yourself giving him a copy of GTA for him birthday.

I can't say anything much different from what's been posted above, but it really depends on the child's maturity. Plus, many kids are getting exposed to it earlier anyway, so it won't exactly scar them for life.

Why i was playing dnd since i was like 7..Ive not killed or killed myself yet..Kids have been doing this since the days of superman was wrote..That one kid back than jumped off a mountain thought he can fly..Killed himself..Parrents back that flipped out...Saying superman was to blame yada yada..Dnd had dice rolls an such to kill monsters before video games released...It was imagination of killing..Some kids took it seriously an took a axe to his friend or some thing back than..Parrents yet again blamed dnd..Nuts as it sounds..Why should one problem mature into all kids..Only because one kid flips out an does things..Perhaps me think its the parrents themselves who are to blame..Think about it..

No. Parents really need to get off their ass and start being informed about what their kids are and are not mature enough to look at. Using a broad sweeping ratings systems on a target audience/age group that has probably the largest maturity delta of any demographic is irresponsible.

My entertainment was NEVER governed when i was growing up regardless of my age and there is absolutely nothing wrong with me as a result.

I disagree it's all about the maturity of the kid in general, age hasn't nothing to do with this, how the kid was raised does though.

Let me take my friends little brother as an example here. He usually borrow my friend's Xbox to play games, and is CONSTANTLY(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) asking for help to do ANYTHING! He's not that good at english yet, and he's basically too young to understand anything that's going on. That's why I agree with TC.

CONTEXT! Nuff said. No really, this modern day thought that anything will corrupt their children is pretty much bull. I played street fighter,Mortal Kombat and other 'inaproppriate' games when they came out and I was about 8 and as long as you have some education, you'll know it's just a game. Raise/educate your damn kids, or at least teach them to think for themselves. no problems will come of it.

That goes for any online game. I could go ruin the innocence of hundreds of children on "Webkinz" if I wanted to.

DO IT! But some games are more prone to it than others. I don't see many trolls on the Hello Kitty Party community.

Its still rated M and just because its a popular game doesn't change that fact.

I disagree. I was playing Mortal Kombat, Primal Rage, Killer Instinct, Goldeneye, Clayfighters, etc. at around that age. I was born in '87 so around '95-96 I was about 8, and kicking ass at games. That's not too different from many of the gamers who grew up in the late 80's with games and whatnot. If the parent feels like their child is old enough to play the game I have no objection to it. If the kid gets annoying online I just mute him. Problem solved.

Same. I played Wolfenstein 3D when I was three and Duke Nukem at five (2D games and 3D). Played Mortal Kombat as well, hated it for the poor gameplay but I could have played it.

Doesn't matter. That has nothing to do with M rated games that is something else entirely.

It all depends on the kid, some can and some can't. It is up to the parent to make informed choices...and you know generally parent their children. Unfortunately in most cases this does not happen in the slightest bit...

Parents need to be given back the freedom to raise their children. If they want to let an 8 yr old see some pixel gore, fine. If not, fine. I'm also an advocate for beatings, parents need to bring that back, too.

I didn't play a lot of violent games as a kid. Well, at 8 yrs old, there really weren't any, not by today's standard s- only Nintendo was making anything and their most violent game back then was like Ninja Gaiden or Double Dragon or whatever. At the time, the worst stuff was only in movies.

Yeah, I do think 8 years old is a biiiiit young to be playing M rated games. I notice that, at Gamestop, the associates there advise a parent who has an underage kid that the M rated game has blood, violence, etc.

I guess this is why the kids at my old school are so dimwitted and perverted...

But then, game companies themselves are not to blame-it is the parents themselves. I see like 8 year olds buying M rated games at my local Gamestop, yet their parents are willing to buy it for them. GTA is a good game but kids playing it and believing it is a real life simulator just makes it all go over the edge.

Dude, Look around. Look at MTV which is public and has no ratings, or look at the Young and the Restless or *insert hot teen show here*(it was 90210 and saved by the bell in my day), or look at predator, terminator, and all of the other movies that FX shows on a regular basis. That stuff is much heavier than M rated games and far more accessible. If there is one thing that is expected for our kids nowadays its access. It's the responsibility of the parents to tell children about what they see and play. Believe me when I say parents can't stop kids from playing or doing what they want, but they can teach kids how to live responsibly.

Well I played gory games from my early teens and am thoroughly corrupted as you can tell from my screen name. I go to rotten.com for amusement. It's the parents' duty to know what their kids are playing. If they want the kids to grow up to be jaded and confrontational, let them play GTA from age 8. If they want them to grow up to be control freaks, put them on a steady diet of Sims. But don't blame the games for affecting your kids' development if you didn't even care about what they were playing while raising them.

I think that it is up to the parent to decide how they should treat their child in this area.

Otherwise, a golden rule should be to never allow your child online with voice chat enabled until they have emerged from the "squeaky whistle" phase.
