I am 18 years old and turn 19 in about 3 months. I am graduating high school this May. I own a PS4 that I bought with my own money, and also bought the TV that I play it on. I make $13.58 (median b/w added night + weekend bonus) an hour right now and work 22 hours a week. I will be pushing 40 hours during the summer before I start college next Fall.

I am not allowed to hook up my PlayStation to the internet

I can easily afford PSPlus but the main argument that my parents use is that I need to save up for my own car. I use my dads truck to get to and from work as well. They also say that hooking up my PS4 to the internet will be too expensive. They tell me if I want internet on my PS4 I will have to pay for my own internet, but they won't allow me to pay for my own internet because they say I need to save up for a car. Moving out isn't an option until I next Fall. Has anyone else ever had a similar problem? Is there anything I can do in this situation? Would I be able pay for my own internet with the money I make right now? I currently pay insurance on my dads truck each month -250$. If you have any questions I will answer them. I also don't know if they are lying about the console being connected to WiFi racking up internet costs. Can someone tell me how much playing online game has afffected how much they pay for internet each month?

Sorry for the rant, if you want any information on my situation just ask. I really need some advice.

Sorry, bro. As long as you live under their roof, you have to live by their rules.

Enjoy your remaining high school time in other ways and save the online gaming for when you’re on your own.

Another kid complain about their parents... Like the one above me said, as long you live in their house, it is their law. You could potentially make your own rules- By living yourself. Your parents want that you'll save money for your future, and they correct 100%.

@yammireckorrdsan: How much will online gaming rack up on an internet bill? I know it depends on your service provider, but generally speaking? @Ross_the_Boss6

Try talking to the openly, their justification doesn't make any sense so either they are completely clueless or they have some misconceptions.

It depends on their internet plan. I use on average 1tb a month sometimes over 1.5tb however I'm the father of the house hold with 3 kids and everything is streamed of downloaded. My PS4 uses about 500gb a month (including games and streaming at 1080p almost 24/7). So find out their internet plan and if unlimited, explain simply why it won't affect anything. Then try to explain how it's good for your mental health and won't cost much for you or them (find a paper on google that shows it's good for mental health to show them proof). My parents were sometimes like this and I'd pretty much prepare a presentation for my argument. It would usally work if I had any sort of case

@phbz: I tried to talk to them about me paying up any loose ends on the internet bill caused by playing online, but they aren't open to that idea. I just can't find the middle ground.

As a parent myself, it's kind of shady but you do live with them. I allow my teenagers to play online but they must buy their own gold memberships. You just gotta deal with it until you move out and live on your own man.

Hard to say. I know the internet in America is pretty poor and a lot of providers still suffer from usage limits so your parents might not be entirely incorrect when they mention costs. However, if you're willing to pay your share of the bills then there should not be any issues. If they continue being unreasonable then I can only recommend getting your own place, even if it means rooming with someone else. At your age you should be looking and working towards becoming independent from your parents and only you can figure out the way to achieve this that is suitable for you, even if your parents don't agree with it. It does not sound like your parents trust you with the responsibility of taking care of yourself and the longer you allow them to control you like they are doing, the less likely they are to every respect you as an adult.

I guess once you're out of the house it'll be a great feeling when you finally get the chance to play online. Sometimes it's for the best for now though. A lot of bullies in online gaming especially FPS.

@wingedscapula: I would just straight ask them to cut the crap and tell me openly what's the real issue. Not that it would change their minds but it appears to me that they might have other reasons. Maybe their afraid you get addicted, or some other stuff they were told. They have absolute power in this case but sometimes an open conversation makes miracles.

If it’s that important to you - move out. You’re of age. But yea, their house, their rules.

Better do it soon though - sony doesn’t keep their games online that long.

dude your 18, they can't tell you what to do with your own earned money, even if you live under their roof, they have NO RIGHT to tell you how to spend your money, they can ask you to help with some of the house bills and stuff, but any spare money is not their fucking business. seriously. My best advice is not asking them at all, just buy the online membership, you'r internet fee wont come any higher.
