Hey everyone, I'm a community member for FreeOrion, and an avid Gamespot fan,
Since the release of Master of Orion 3, some people haven't felt that it wasn't the direction the game should have gone, and an open-family mass community of fans have been working on making a new one called FreeOrion.
FreeOrion itself is a multiplayer, turn-based strategy computer game, inspired by the Master of Orion series. It is free software using the GNU General Public License v2, and also Creative Commons Attribution - Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license.
It is a 4X game (explore, expand, exploit, exterminate), incorporates the nation-building elements of games such as Europa Universalis 2, and also provides a tactical combat engine along the lines of Homeworld and the Total War series.
It is currently up to 0.3.9, and has taken it's time, but is turning out to be a great game so far. The title is currently up to the 3D combat stage, and will be having a hybrid Turn-based / Real time ****to it, all contributions are welcome for show, and the community is very friendly to newcomers.
I'm not going to state what the SDK they're using is, because that is not in my best knowledge as I help with different areas of the project (such as art, and ideas), but what I can tell you is that its modular, open-source design allows for a significant degree of customization of the game engine (Most likely MoO3) and the story elements by the community. The FreeOrion team itself is dedicated to the construction of a living, breathing universe in a 'grand campaign' model, and handles this as a professional project.
If you liked any of the Master of Orion titles, or similar 4X Space strategies, please stop by the official FreeOrion forums, and put in some ideas, or input your skills and help finish creating this project.

Advertising is not allowed in the forums. You can talk about this in your blog and keep a link in your sig, but that's it. Also, feel free to start your own UCB or Union dedicated to the project.
