Doesn't anyone enjoy walking through a REAL STORE and looking for neat stuff like PC games anymore? Besides who wants to download every freaking thing you play on PC? I'm not saying I mind a game update to go with, just have most of the content on DVD mostly, then update if necessary.

Nope

Besides collector´s edition which now mostly comes with a key for steam or some other DD i have not bought any physical game since i got my org. ps3 and it came with a few games.

And thank god for that. i can now buy games when i want and not wait until some store is open.

Yeah I definitely prefer having physical versions of my games with all the nice box artwork etc. I don't even mind paying more for it if necessary. This is one reason why I don't game on the PC anymore.

I only buy physical copies of games/series I really like, am highly anticipating, or for collector's editions. But even then, it's through Amazon or something. I hate retail stores with a passion. Mostly because I worked at one for 3 years when I was younger, but still.

Besides, ordering online is just too convenient. And digital download prices are sometimes too good to pass up vs their physical counterparts. Plus online you can check out screenshots, reviews, gameplay videos, etc. of a game you are interested in buying before getting it preventing buyer's remorse.

@The_Stand_In: Yes i have gotten games much cheaper from digital download sources I agree! The problem with having to download a full game copy, is if you share the same internet connection with other family members in your home. It just takes to darn long, and they will most likely not be able to use their PC while that huge download is in progress for so long . That's why I mentioned buying it on a physical disc first somewhere, then the updates would not big so large. Most games will install from game disc first, and then will update the as necessary..Not everyone has the option to just download with wide open speed whenever they want. I still love shopping for games in stores and always will!! I do buy digital game downloads when possible, but just DON'T WANT THAT TO BE THE ONLY OPTION LEFT, which sadly looks like is heading that way! hAPPY gAMING!

on pc physical copies are pointless. there's no resell value. plus you can get them for next to nothing on steam and download speeds are super fast.

on the ps4 i'll pick up physical copies because they have resell value. plus ps store speeds are hit and miss. it can sometimes take an hour or two to download a couple of gb (and i've got 200mbps+ internet). but even after buying hard copies i still have to download gigantic patches before i can play (dishonored 2 for e.g. had a 9gb day one patch)

Heh. Outside of collectors editions, physical copies are useless. This goes for all platforms. There are better stores to walk through, and there is no price advantage.

....I can see it being useful for people who don't have a capable internet connection. So in that way I guess the fate of physical copies is tied to internet speeds, however soon enough I think they will phase them out as they are an unnecessary waste of resources.

....and the point about reselling games.... well I regret selling most of my PS3 games so I don't usually consider that anymore.

The term 'DVD' gives me serious turn-of-the-century vibes.

Most gamers are introvert and doesn't like going outside their room that much but I'd love to actually buy a game on a game store packed with a box. It's a lot fun like that plus you can display it in your room and make it like a collection.

@gamerez: I got a physical copy of Dragons Dogma Online for P.C. but considering it's an online game anyway, getting a physical copy was kinda worthless.

I do prefer physical though, and given the option I'd always take it, always. However you won't get that much on the P.C. platform. For the travelling type like me, it's pretty sad but I understand why they've taken this route.

When you download a game you don't technically own your purchase, it's merely rented. And in a decades time you're no guaranteed to be able to play it again. With a physical version you do, so long as it's well kept.

That is not true.

According to the EU court , you do own any purchase online and you can do with it what you want, which is also the reason why Steam had to change their policies.

So yes you do technically own any online purchase. (well at least in the eu)

@Jacanuk: I'm not sure what EU stands for, so excuse my ignorance.

I know Steam has a very good policy that if a game is removed, and you already made the purchase, you can re-download it. For how long however is debatable. I'm not sure how reliable GoG is for re-downloading but assume they follow the same policy.

However, on stated-issue PSN games are very problematic. My personal experiences are P.T., Turtles in Time Remake, and CastleVania: Devil's Castle. All these games you can't re-download. They are removed permanently.

I stand with my belief that you never know when your downloaded game is removed, it's a little more reassuring on the P.C. platform, but on consoles is still a mess. Physical is far more reliable.

EU = European Union.

But that court case which is from the EU Grand Court , pretty much stated that once you buy any software it´s yours and the same rights as with brick and mortars apply. Meaning that you own and have the right to resell the item. Which pretty much made Steam shit their pants and quickly change their user policies because it was not clear enough that steam was only a middleman.

Not sure about the PSN and Xbox One marketplace, but the same rules should apply and in the EU The DEveloper/Publisher would have to provide you with a different download source or a physical copy if they suddenly removed the title.

@The_Stand_In: Yes indeed! I don't want to see every thing going to downloads that you buy. I don't mind huge updates either, but at least put most of the content on the freaking disc! Yes steam is awesome and i use it everyday, but don't want to see the store shelf games generation go away. Sometimes when u have a short weekend and really want a new pc game that u want to play, then buying it on DVD is the best way in my opinion. Then it can update and just maybe you will have time to play the darn thing b4 work week starts again. I'm a weekend gamer mostly. So not enough time for huge game downloads + the updates as well, b4 the weekend is almost over lol

@Jacanuk: Didn't know Europeans had it so good. With that stated I know little outside of Scotland and Italy, being the only two places in your continent I've visited.

@Jacanuk: Really?

I remember an EU decision about software back in 2012, but it was never definitively applied to videogames, and I don't remember Valve ever doing much in response to the decision.

Has the EU now decided that people can resell online games, or is it still just conjecture at this point?

It was a judgment in regards to software and the ability to resell. So yes it did apply to games, software is software whether it´s programs or games.

But the case made it clear that same rights as with "bricks and mortar" applies to online software. So analog it can be transferred to games.
