I was reading something about a DS and a wii game that recently came out (Forget the DS game, I think the Wii game was baroque) and apparently they have permadeath, meaning when you die, you lose everything that you have earned throughout the entire game.
It can be cool if implemented properly. In Way of the Samurai, the game deletes your save file every time you load it, so you have to press on to the next save point. If you die, you lose whatever swords you brought with you. It was challenging, but it really put the pressure on in a fun way. It made the fights feel much more substantial since you knew losing wasn't an option.
Well implemented permadeath is a nice addition to a game, adding a whole new level of difficulty, to show off your achievements or e-peen. For example hardcore mode in Diablo 2.
Ah, Baroque. That's a roguelike dungeon crawler. That's the way they work. They're not very common on consoles, possibly because people don't understand them.
You should look up Rogue, NetHack, and Fushigi no Dungeon (Mystery Dungeon).
