I would have to say Final Fantasy IV. I like it for its simplicity, yet brilliance. It never gets frustrating and has a great story.

I havent found a game that offers freedom, a great story and great characters yet. So my three favorite RPGs are
Morrowind
VtM: Bloodlines
NWN 2: MotB
I haven't played a ton of RPG's, but I'd have to go with Final Fantasy XII as my favorite. Loved the gambit system, it felt like I was learning how to use it for almost the entire game. The characters were absolutely fantastic, and the sheer size of the game and variety of environments was incredible. And then there was that amazing climax at the end.
Xenogears.
I could probably swap that spot with either one of these if i replay them - Gothic 2: Gold, Planescape Torment, Fallout 2 and Temple of Elemental Evil, all of these are my personal favorite RPGs of all time. But at the moment, it's Xenogears, and is by far the greatest RPG that has appeared on consoles.

this, xenogears was just plain awesome, along with chrono cross/triger and final fantasy vi
After all of the threads based on this question, I still cannot answer with a single game, so here is a list:
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Fallout 3
Dragon Age Origins
Dragon Quest VIII
Dragon Quest IX
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne I would still call the greatest console (J)RPG of all time. The atmosphere, challenge, and gameplay depth is rarely matched even to date.
I'll have to try Fallout 3 and Mass Effect soon however. I'm told they're both quite the gaming experience. That, and I've never played a WRPG before.
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. It has some flaws but it really sets itself apart with great characters and freedom of choice.
Yeah KOTOR is right up there for me for sure... Also Witcher 2. Do the Mass Effect games count?Kotor. I want 3.

They do count, some people will say the ME games aren't RPGs but they have a lvln system, loot system (well ME2 doesn't really have one),a party that lvls and a skill tree.
Fallout 3.
It wasn't just something I played thru, it was like an alternate life.
I didn't use the in-game housing, I found my own in the wasteland, an outdoors place that was my "camp." (Under a bridge not to far from Super Duper mart)
In my off-hours that's where I spent all my time, living at this camp, scavenging, setting mines for intruders, dragging everything back, repairing and selling stuff I didn't need.
My new favorite is probably Skyrim even tho I haven't played it yet. I can already see I will be spending many many months living in Skyrim.
Valkyrie Profile. I'm holding out for a VP3 for this generation of consoles.
King9999
Spoken as a huge VP fan, that game had no fudging business getting a sequel in the first place. Iirc, VP2 debut with less than 40,000 sold. I don't see VP3 coming anytime soon.
So hard to decide since I've played so damn many.
The two that probably always come to mind first when I think of my favourite rpgs would be Morrowind and FFVII. I've spent so many hours playing those games. Probably because I've played them about 10 or so times.
My favorite Western Role-Playing Game is Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
My favorite Japanese Role-Playing Game is Final Fantasy VII.
i was never much of an RPG fan. there are only 3 RPGs ive ever played that i truely enjoyed.
the first was runescape. i cant explain what it is about it that i like, but ive been a regular player on that since 2006, and i still enjoy it to this day. i like the graphics for it because they are retro and a bit cartoony, but not too much of either. i like the massive amount of things to do, and the devs constantly update it with new content so there is always something fresh and new to do when you start to get bored.
the next was fallout: New vegas. i really enjoyed the atmosphere and there was always cool places to explore, and the difficulty was just right on that game where it wasnt a cakewalk, but it wasnt frustrating. i played FO3 before it and didnt like it. i only ended up getting this one because i desperately needed a new game and it was only like 15 dollars new at best buy. ended up loving it. although i can no longer play it sadly as it was my ex's favorite game and it brings back to many memories.
the last is skyrim. its my first elder scrolls game and i enjoyed, and am still enjoying it fully. the world is massive and captivating, the combat is simple, yet fun varied. there is an immense amount of activities, and there are still big questlines i havent completed. its just endless fun.
