Pistols, although normally weaker than most weapons, are always my weapon of choice in FPS's (at least the campaign). There's nothing more satisfying than a headshot with a pistol, best pistols evar imo are the one's from Half Life 2 and Halo: CE.
MG's & co lack a lot of the downsides in FPS that they have in reallife. Normally You can't carry that many weapons or ammo, can't hide them that well, they make it hard to maneuver, to hit with in close combat, to fabricate etc. And usually because the other weapons are so plentiful and mighty that the pistol gets an unrealistic upgrade too, to at least give it some purpose. A shame in my opinion. They use realistic weapons too often, yet even the realistic ones that are used everywhere they all use the same way.

this is a great point. in reality all other weapons are really a burden to carry around, while a pistol user would enjoy ease of use, movement, and speed that other weapons do not offer.
Pistols suck relative to other weapons, unless you are talking Halo. My friend and I always play 1 on 1 sniping matches and pistols rule when you run out of sniper ammo or at close range for a quick kill.
Pistols are awesome. I specialized in Pistol in Deus Ex, and it didn't get much better than that. You max it out and you can do so much damage with a headshot.. no point in using the assault. I felt like a badass secret agent :P lol.

Pistols in Halo CE and Halo Reach. And do the pistols in BFBC2 count? Sometimes I just like running around taking people out with a pistol. Especially in short-range (not point blank). :)

Anyway on topic: I really like using pistols in games, I don't really know why, but it feels more fun shooting a pistol than an SMG or rifle.
They are common in most (if not all) FPS games, and are usually used as a primary weapon in the opening level of the game before you pick some more beefy guns up. I don't mind them, but I tend to not use them once I acquire new weapons.
