I noticed that the other guys discontinued the GameCube and the original Xbox ages ago. New consoles seem to go for about $300, and no retailers carry them anymore.

On the other hand, you can still get a brand new PlayStation 2 from a number of retailers, including Amazon, for $99.99.

How long until the PS2 also meets its inevitable end and productionof itshuts down?

I want to know because in case Sony never brings back PS2 backwards-compatibility in the future, then I'd better stock up on new PS2 consoles before they are discontinued.

NEVER! LONG LIVE PS2!

Ps2 has an excellent library, which unfortunately ps3 hasn't got. I think if ps3 had as a good as a library as ps2 does, sony would have stopped it a long time ago.

ps2 is a console that people still love. i would look at that as a good thing that sony was able to keep ps2 alive and kicking this long.

I know that many big retailers are severely downsizing, if not completely removing their PS2 sections; I know Target has stopped carrying all PS2 merchandise, and places like Gamestop and Best Buy usually have a fraction of a shelf or a little bin designated for PS2 games. If I had to make a rough prediction as to when you wont be able to find new PS2 consoles and games readily, I'd say within a 10-months you'll have to buy a PS2 online or at an Indi-game store if you want. It is very sad, I feel like a grew up with this system and to see it go eventually will be a hard pill to swallow. Long Live PS2!!!

Probably for another couple of years. Wouldn't hurt to grab one now, though. Not sure if that BC peripheral device will ever come to fruition, so better safe than sorry. $100 is small potatoes for all the awesomeness has to offer.:)

If it drops the $50 new I will buy it in a heartbeat. Both of my ps2's (both fat) are pieces of junk. It's partially my fault because I should have taken better care of them.

Soon Probably. They projected a ten year lifespan for the system and it came out when? 99, 00 ? I would say soon.

The PS2 sold over 150 million units so you do don't ever need to worry about not finding one. 30 years from now there still be more of them than people will know what to do with.

I disagree with that immensely.

The PlayStation 3 started off slow, but in the last 3.5 years has made TREMENDOUS headway. The PS3 library has already surpassed where the PS2 library was 4.5 years into its life. By the time the PS3 makes it exit, its library will have far surpassed its predecessors.

I mean, the PS3 has retained almost all of the great franchises that the PS2 had, while adding a bunch of new ones. And we certainly didn't have breakout gems like Street Fighter IV or Batman: Arkham Asylum in the last generation. The PS3 has the strongest library of any system in this current generation, and as much as I love the PS2, not even it can compete. Three years ago the PS3 was dead last, and in the last fewyears the improvements it has made have been simply incredible.

Sony Computer Entertainment alone now has a franchise for practically every single genre of games, more than the other guys combined. Add to that all of the great third-party titles on the console, and it's no wonder that the PlayStation 3 has quickly become my favorite system of all time.

the end (for the ps2) is soon. it is soon. It's far from an "expiration date" though. You'll still find them used at Gamestop for a while longer. Finding an OLDER model (not slim) might be harder to find at Gamestop though. but retail stores like Target and Walmart will stop carrying the Ps2 a little while after sony stops production. it is kinda shocking to see them STILL on the shelves. My ps2 still works, so i dont see a reason to spend $100 on a new one as a backup.

It is 2011 and the PS2 is still going strong. Sony will kill it off when PS4 is realeased. Since there is No more PS2 backwards Compatibility in PS3. Sony can continue to sell this system at least till Playstation 4.

Oh, come on. That's ridiculous. The PS2 library beats it in size, variety, and uniqueness.

The PS3's library is comparable to the 360's as they share most of the same games (with a handful of exclusives), not the PS2's.

Untill people will keep buying it. The Xbox and GC weren't really a match for the PS2 in terms of sales and MS and Nintendo probably want people to buy the 360 and Wii instead.

I think new stock is beginning to dwindle as we speak. Most resale chains like GameStop here in the US have begun to phase out old stock games, even (I've gone into the storage room of a few stores recently in order to see what games they have left), and the hardware is becoming quite scarce if you're looking for a new-in-box system. I just scored one a few months ago, but again, the clerk had to go into the back room to dig it out.

Peripherals like the LogiTech wireless are VERY rare (and with good reason, they were the best controller with or without wire the system has ever seen), so if you find one of those, snap it up! But is the system dead? I would echo the sentiment of "Long Live The PS2!"

I've got one brand-new for when my current consoles die... There will be plenty of PS2 gaming in MY house for years to come!

:D

(Same with GameCube, and O.G. Xbox, for that matter).

I have a killer resale shop near me that still carries GB, GBA, NES, SNES, N64, XB, PSOne, PS2, and current-gen hardware and games - I was amazed at the treasure trove they have on-hand, and they re-finish all the discs so everything is cleaner than skeeter's peter... they have a website so if anyone wants the info I'd be glad to share though I'm tempted to keep it a secret! LoL! The prices are amazing considering the market. Retro will live forever!

(I hope)

Won't be long now b4 the PS2 can't be found new in stores anymore. It has already exceeded the 10 years lifespan planned out for it. Get one now if you want it. I stocked up on Logitech Wireless PS2 controllers b4 they were discontinued.

That's precisely why the PS3 library is superior. Its ratio of good games to total games is far, far greater than the PS2's. The PS2 had a HUGE library, yes, but that's doesn't make it better. Quite the contrary, as it only decreases its percentage of good games. Nowadays, publishers can't afford to take risks and publish anything they want to, considering how much larger the costs of production are for AAA titles.

At this time in its lifespan, the PS2 was practically equal to the PS3 in terms of the NUMBER of "great" games. However, the PS2 has had way, way more crap released on it than the PS3 has.

Other than JRPG's what types of games are missing on PS3? PS3 has got a lot more shooters and WRPG's than the PS2 has. Franchise like Sly Cooper, God of War, and the the Team ICO games are all being established on PS3. Collections of the PS2 games are also being made. There are greater leaps in the sequels that were produced on the PS3. Uncharted to Uncharted 2 was greater leap than Jak 1 to Jak 2. The Ratchet games have had a bigger step up this generation than in the previous one. Clank's gameplay in the old PS2 games was more or less the same in each one. Clank's gameplay from Tools of Destruction to A Crack in Time was a big step up. I do not remember any strategy games like Valkyria Chronicles on PS2. I do not remember any kind of user generated content on PS2. PS2 had a larger quantity of games, but a lot of those games were marginally a step up from their predecessors.

I have no idea. I've had my PS2 slim, since the end of 2004 or start of 2005, and it' hasn't had any issues. The PS2 is a fantastic system. I've been thinking about buying a new one to have as a back up.

Probably a year or so before Sony stops manufacturing the devise, on thing is certain, once that happens I want to see the PS2 Slim drop to $49.99 before I buy a back up one.

You think Ratchet and Clank has taken a big step up on PS3? :? Ratchet and Clank has to be the most static series out there. Tools of Destructions was a shameless rehash of the PS2 formula. A Crack in Time is alot better, but is still the same formula they've been using forever, just executed with more verve.

PS3 may have more WRPGs and shooters, but they are the same ones that the Xbox has. The PS3 doesn't have the tons of exclusives that PS2 had, the games that you couldn't get anywhere else.

There were certain strategy RPGS on the PS2:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tactical_role-playing_game

If there are a greater amount of great games on PS2, it doesn't really matter if there's more crap as well.

So, just out of curiosity, would you also rate the Xbox 360's library better than the PS2's?

October 26th will mark the 10th anniversary of the release of the PS2 in North America, and without new software coming out I'm surprised Sony has kept selling new systems. Perhaps Sony will announce some kind of price drop this year, but as long as there's demand, it seems there will be supply, and as long as they keep the software backward-compatibility out of PS3, people don't have much choice. I don't even remember the PlayStation lasting this long in the market. On a side-note my original "phat" PS2 from launch is still alive and well, as is my slim from 2004.

it did, the PS1 was officially discontinued in 2006, though of course it was dead years beforehand (just like the PS2 really only saw its last big releases in 2008/2009)
