Eh, I don't think that GSC was a direct step forward as much as it was a step to the side and a trip to the grocery store. Yes, it's bigger. Yes, it...looks better, I guess. Larger Pokédex and everything.
Yet, it did also feel somewhat different. Smoother, yes, but also somewhat drawn out at parts. And revisiting Kanto wasn't nearly as well done as the Johto region was, so that isn't quite the end-all-be-all definer of the game for me. The music was somewhat compositionally advanced in comparison to RBY and the graphics were smoother, so that's some points for GSC.
But at the same time, a lot of the stuff it did just felt unnecessary and/or just different. And when there's difference, some will prefer one over the other. Objective quality be damned when I say that I just like the amazing contrast between the simplistic graphics, music, overworld and mechanics and the deeper-than-it-seems battle system that drives batles stronger than many in the rpg world. That simple-yet-complex feel is something that inexplicably draws me in, more so than GSC and the way it full-heartedly embraced the complexity in all other areas, taking away from the charm I felt in RBY.
But even so, GSC was a rather logical evolution of RBY, there's no denying that, and I understand completely why people'd prefer them over the originals. RSE, however, feel like they took the original formula, added the overworld mechanics of GSC and threw in some pointless gimmicks to play around with. REALLY disappointing of an evolution.
And in regards to FRLG, I just feel that it took the originals' gameplay and took away all the charm from it, replacing it with the same graphics and sound quality we got in RSE, not really a tradeoff I was very happy with :{
Oh and hi guys, I'm new. Was there some welcome topic I missed somewhere...?

Hmmm....I think I can see what you're saying about the charm of RBY, but, even disregarding FRLG, I still think GSC is simply a more fine tuned version of RBY. I feel like the first pokemon games were something of an expirement, and even though it's great, there are still a few areas that needed some work. For a lot of fights, all I needed was a powered up Alakazam with pyschic/recover combo! There really wasn't anything to beat that.
GSC filled in those holes while adding some new features that are interesting, if not necessary. A night clock, happiness evolutions, all that stuff. It, to me, always ends up being the better of the two. Even without missingno.(I loved that guy)
Hey, if you're new, and want to find an interesting place to talk about games, why not join the union I'm a part of! We like to talk about a lot of ideas about games that you don't normally see on the forums. You can click the link on union, or the Beatles song in my sig to get there.
In any case, welcome!
