I was only 8 years old when these consoles came out. I decided to ask my mum for a Playstation, after playing on my older brothers console and being blown away by Ridge Racer and Alien Trilogy. That and I remember thinking my mum wouldn't fork out an extra £100 for a Sega Saturn lol.

Definitely the Playstation, it beat the Saturn in every way that one console can beat another. Can't wait for the Sega fanboys to start posting though.

Easily the PlayStation.

I can't think of many good things to say about the Saturn.

Well, if 32 bit means no N64, I'd go with the PSX. The Saturn was great fun, but the PSX had Spyro and Crash and two of my favorite Final Fantasy games(VII and IX).

I never owned a Playstation or Saturn when they were on the market (I had the N64). But I did buy a Saturn recently to see what it was like, and I do like it. Definitely an under-appreciated console.

Correct, they had 32-bit processors. The Jaguar and N64 had 64-bit processors. Technically, 3DO should be in the poll as well if you're going to talk about 5th Generation consoles. :P

If I had to choose one, I would say Playstation, which was my main system at the time. On the other hand, I'd like to add that I bought a really cheap Saturn shortly before the dreamcast came out, and therefore was able to enjoy some great games one that console (panzer dragoon, Daytona, Virtua Fighter 2).

Man, those games were good, it's sad the Saturn didn't have a longer life. But the Playstation just had a larger and more attractive library.

the PS1 had a larger more varied library of games sure. but, that desn't always translate to good quality titles.

loads of games on PS were just awful. it probably had a thousand titles or more. probably only 5 or 10 percent of those games were worth playing, and even fewer were triple A games.

aside from FF, RESI, Suikoden, MGS, soul blade, WipeOut and the sublime Vagrant Story, were there really that many games that were actually good? I'm not sure in retrospect just how many good games the PS1 had.

And on the other hand, i can name loads of games for the saturn that were genuinely good games and have aged suprisingly well.I'm not going to. cos that's not what i wanna do. I'm not a fan boy. far from it. i just know the titles i own for the system are certainly more treasured and are infintly more desireablethan anything on PS.

except, maybe,Vagrant Story...

Well, yeah I guess. If you were really into arcade games. If you were into RPGs (unless you're a Shining Force whore), platformers, action/adventures, 3D fighters (Tekken, Rival School, Soul Blade) and racers, you would easily pick the Playstation over the Saturn. Like I previously said, if you love SHUMPs then you'd love the Saturn. But then again the Playstation also had a good SHUMP library, with titles such as Einhander, Gradius Gaiden, R-Type Delta and Zanac X Zanac.

that I would agree with. though the Saturn does have good RPGs (Panzer Saga, Shining the holy ark, Grandia, Lunar 1/2) the playstation has overall a better RPG library. likewise the PS1 has some good fighters (tekken, Mortal Kombat, the Street fighter alpha 3) the saturn beats the playstation, especially in the 2D fighting department I would advise people to own them both, in my opinion a PS1/Saturn combo is waaay better then a PS3/360 combo, better games, more affordable and more games.

Not back then but I can now! :) Actually, when I first had the chance to play the 3DO the game it had in it was Gex. It was a fun game but sadly it would take years for me to learn that it was the only great game on the system... and after looking at the price tag, even my 10 year old mind knew it wasn't going to ask the parents for one.

On a more serious note, if we're talking about the "32-bit generation" then my favorite is easily the Nintendo 64.

Wrong. Both the Gamecube and Wii use IBM processors based on the PowerPC 4 architecture, which is a 64-bit processor. Also, the Jaguar had a 32-bit processor with a 64-bit wide bus to the hardware.

The IBM PC's descendants, before x86 CPUs got 64-bit extensions. Console-wise, during the 5th console generation, I continued my Nintendo preference with the N64, so I can't vote for that. I did dabble with a PS1 for a bit, but the console just never really appealed to me that much. (Neither did the PS2, one console generation later.) I'm not saying it's bad-not at all. I won't refuse to play on one or anything like that. But it's the one I like the least. However, living in the States and all, the Saturn never really caught on. I knew a few people with them, but never actually got to play on the thing. Fast-forward several years later, and I now also have a Sega Saturn and know about its good games. What I can say about it is that, Square and Enix aside, the Saturn is my preferred 32-bit console by far based on library, even though most of the titles I have in mind are imports. (Good thing I have an Action Replay 4M Plus cart now for that.) I didn't know about the 3DO back then, either (mostly thought they were a third-party developer for the N64 and PS1), but in retrospect, I do have some slight interest in it now. Enhanced port of Star Control II, one of the best ports of Super Street Fighter II Turbo (with a soundtrack many consider SUPERIOR to the arcade version!), the original version of Return Fire, and a few other things. The 699 US$ price tag is probably what did it in, though. (I mean, people were complaining about 599 US DOLLARS for a PS3 not too long ago, and that was after inflation!)

Well, not exactly true. Didn't the Jaguar have two 32-bit proccessors, which is technically different than 64-bit.

The Saturn to answer the question, I got on the PS1 bandwagon later b/c I had a imported Saturn and weak importing knowledge.
