Sorry if this is a stupid question but, why is it that on console games you have to press start at the beginning? And why is this not in most PC games?

I've wondered about that too. I guess it's to confirm the controller's connection or something.

although we are offtopic, I honestly have no idea why there is a prerequisite "press start or X" screen to most games. Tradition, perhaps?

That's the only reason I can I think of. Sometimes they're nice (most Nintendo games), sometimes they're boring and it seems like they're only there because developers felt obligated (Fable).
