I dont know if anyone else has noticed this, maybe its just me, but has anyone noticed how shiny and pretty all of the graphics look these days? Take Gears of War for example, the city streets and buildings look both pretty and realistic, but in some placed, like the rainy areas outside of the imulsion factory are all polished up, they look 'too' good, same with the locust tunnels. eh, I really dont know how to describe it, but if you've ever seen a rainy street or a rainy forest you know that its not all shiny and extra pretty and polished up, and if you have seen a thunder storm, then you know its usually drab and grey. it seems like developers are really over-doing the graphics, instead of making them realistic they make them good looking to grab attention. still, I guess its not so bad, the graphics these days are real eye candy.

I agree on the topic title.

I prefer nice graphics than realistic. Shiny graphics is not good. I also prefer PS2's graphics than PS3's.

Best graphics for me are Hitman Blood Money (PS2), Rogue Galaxy, FFX, and Okami. For landscape, nothing beats Shadow of the Colossus.

For me, those games mentioned above have better graphics than the current gen.

Agreed. It rather have pretty, immersive graphics that fit well with the game, than those who try for the realistic look. I really do hate those games that have that "shiny" gleen to them. It ruins it for me cause its crap. lol

GTA4 is sorta on the right track, as they will prolly move towards realistic graphics and away from the cartoony visual of old. The did a pretty good job and can only improve from here on out if they stay on this course.

Lately i've come to admire Armed Assaults effort for realistic Visuals that aren't "over the top"

That is an inherent problem with the UE3, it has a "saran-wrap texture filter" that makes everything shiny.

Ever since the console developer crowd has discovered things like bump-mapping, hdr/bloom and other graphical effects, they believe that overdoing them in their engines is a way of making it "look" more realistic when in fact it isn't.

Crysis is a good example of quality technical graphics done right and made to look "realistic" in a non-overblown way.

You make it sound as if realistic graphics are all the PS3 does when nothing could be further from the truth. :| If honestly believe in what you wrote then you definitely haven't seen the likes of R&C, Ninja Gaiden, and LBP.

Well I guess you could say that I prefer the pretty graphics because I absolutely loved the graphics in Gears of War which blew me away, esspecially the rainy level outside of the Immulsion plant. I still find them incredibly impressive.

There were 8-bit games that were immersive, because the graphics told a story.

Realism looks great on the first glance, but it's the artistry that keeps you coming back.

Gears of War is a decent example. It had great graphics, but the setting - a post apocalyptic landscape - the ruins of a great empire - really make the technology work.

Yeah, definitely graphics that convey the story. If the story is going for ultra realism, like a WW2 game where you're actually fighting Nazi's and not mutants, or some other reenactment style game, then the more you can approximate real life, the better. However, I prefer non realistic games, so give me the most crazy looking scenery and load it full of flash, colors, but keep it believable and within the realm of the story, and that's where I'm happiest!

I agree completely. I don't like this trend towards realistic graphics. Art is suffering way too much

Graphicing is a skill ......i think they use the bright polished colors to make very thing seem happy and fun ......but alot of the games should go more rustic and dreary along with their themes.

Seems like most of the people in this thread have a different definition of realistic than I do. Games like Gears and GTA4 look more like an attempt to emulate graphic novels (more specifically, gritty but exaggerated stuff like the work of Frank Miller) than an attempt to be realistic.

Let's get one thing clear. would realism be something that's defined with regard to the settings (WW II, Sports, Racing, etc),or would it be loosely defined in that which the character models are designed to closely resemble humans IRL?

I think that our preferences as far as what is considered aesthetically pleasing is inherently reflective of our tastes in certain types of genres. Thing is, there are particular kinds of artstyles that simply wouldn't be suitable for certain types of genres. For example, it would look totally awkward and out of place if Ratchet was modeled into a realistic portrayal of a wombat or some other marsupial. Same thing applies with Mario. So stating that one type of artstyle is superior to another form just because it reflects your own personal preferences would be fallacious.

I've notice that as games try to emulate reality, they are abolishing everything that made games great to begin with.

Games have always been, for me, comic book-eque rather than realistic. I'm glad some games are aiming for realism, but I don't think it's for any and every genre.

I think it's just better to have variety.

Yeah, GTAIV doesn't try to be realistic at all...

Anyway, the reason games prefer pretty graphics over realistic graphics is because the pallete that reality gives us is rather limited and dull in comparison. And this topic reminds me of a futurama quote: "This is SuperHDTV; It looks better than real life!" (not the exact words but close enough).

If GTA consisted only of buildings, you would make a compelling point. Take a look at the characters.

I know about that glossy effect that a lot of games have. It used to bother me but I'm starting to get used to it.
