So I got into a little argument with a professor of mine about the influences of modern media on the current generation. He offered me the challenge to write a final research paper about the benefits of Video Games on individuals and the new generation. He said, that if it is 100% believable, he would make that research paper my final grade for the semester. As a result - I'm looking to you guys for help:

What are your ideas on the benefits of video games on an individual as well as the benefits to the next generation?

And I need sources to back up my point: studies, research papers, statistics, journals....

Ideas on what you think the benefits are, and if anyone knows any reliable sources I could look up I would forever be grateful.

Thanks alot.

Take a look at a book called "Everything Bad is Good for You" or something like that. It's got a section on how games increase numerous mental processes and has cited studies. In addition, there are articles which examine how surgeons who play more than X hrs of games a week have fewer mistakes. There's stuff that says it increases your ability to multi-task, remember things presented to you quickly, process rapid-fire info, etc. You can discuss how with the increasing use of technology, the basic skills developed in videogames are becoming more applicable to the general job market (computer knowledge, surgeons using high tech gadgets, remote bomber drones, etc). There's actually plenty out there to support it.

Not gonna do the work for you by finding all that stuff, but I have seen evidence in support of all of that at some point or another.

Just type in "benefits of video games" into a search engine in quotations and see what comes up!
