For those of you who are still interested in buying a PS Vita, here's how much the mandatory memory card will set you back:

4GB - $29.99

8GB - $44.99

16GB - $69.99

32GB - $119.99

Pick your poison and, well, have fun.

It's a joke. So I'm guessing £20 for 4GB in the UK.

That's a complete joke. A 32GB card for a camera sells for under $40.

Oh well, wasn't planning on getting one anyway.

Geez, $30 for a 4GB card? I could get PS2 memory cards with 8GB of space for less than that! This is ridiculous! Way to milk your consumer base, Sony.

I think it will be more like £25 for 4GB, £40 for 8GB, £65 for 16GB and £110 for 32GB. I can't see retailers over here selling them for any less because they like to rip us off more than Sony do :P

This is just insulting. The prices for the original silly proprietary Sony Memory Sticks were already high, but even I managed to score a 16GB one of those a couple of years ago for $40 (which is still higher than a comparable SD or Micro SD card). Do not want, Sony.

Ludicrous. If any serious gamer intends to take advantage of the much touted day and date digital option, they will need far more memory than the biggest available card. I would say about 200+ GB. Which at Sony prices would be about 599 US DOLLARS. Pretty much confirms that I won't be buying any digital games at all on that thing, if I even get one at all now.

Even if I did have any interest in the Vita this would have killed it.

It is very very stupid for Sony to require memory cards and at those prices too. Those memory cards are a bigger ripoff than the 360 hard drives.

And, why the heck does the Vita have NO internal storage? For a portable that has such hardware muscle this is really dumb and makes no sense.

That's crazy. Why don't they have onboard memory or include a card? I had little interest in the Vita to begin with, but their oversight kills it.

Aren't proprietary formats great!? Guess I'll wait for a few years for the prices to drop, not that I had more than casual interest in the Vita to begin with. Man, I hope someone develops an emulator for the Vita.

Three reasons:

  1. Money
  2. Money
  3. Content control. (money)

You know, it wasn't too long ago when the 3DS cost the same as the Vita does now, yet it included an SD card and it has internal memory. The Vita looks even more ridiculous now that the 3DS costs far less.

it will probably have some form of drm too so deleting older games to make room wont be much of an option. i think psn already has like a 5 download limit or something.

That limit is down to two now. They did that a while back to help cut down on game sharing.

There used to be a 5 system limit (so one could pay for content once and download it to five difference systems), but I think its now down to 2.

But that limit only refers to the number of systems one can run content on under the same profile, not the number of times one can re-download purchased games and DLC (which is and has always been unlimited0.

@ Quistis I think the lack of on-board memory is due to cost control, not content control. Whether or not a system has onboard memory doesn't impact piracy (the PSP1 had onboard memory and that was the most pirated system this side of the PC).

@ King In terms of hardware, the 3DS offers far less (it has a single analog stick, and a single touchscreen which isn't multitouch) than the Vita, so it makes sense that its cheaper. That being said, I do think the $80 gap is unsustainable in even the medium term.

It's not a five download limit, (it's two now) as you seem to think it is. It means you can only download it to five different systems. You can delete games and redownload them to the same system as many times as you see fit. It's only two now, but if you switch systems you can just deactivate the system for your PSN account before you make the switch, meaning you still have the two different system downloads. You can also call Sony to have them deactivate a system for you if you need to do so.

 for the longest time i thought i could only download games 5 times.

I just think it's really ****** that Sony is using a proprietary storage scheme as a revenue stream in this day and age. I wasn't so much advocating piracy as I was dreaming of a method to play legally purchased Vita games that bypasses the Vita itself. Anything to stick thumbs into the eyes of Sony for their hubris.

I shall wait for a third party card then. I am not shelling out almost half the price of the Vita for a 32GB card. That and I will need the space because I understand not all games will be physical. Lame.

Ya. When they announced the price of the system, everybody was '' ok it's only 250$, alright''. Now you have to add about 25$ extra per 4 gigs of memory. It's to expensive. To think you can get 500 gigs for about 90$. I' d be slightly happier if they had at least bundled a 4 or 8 gig memory card with the system, but no. Money comes first. As for the prices of memory cards, I think 10$ for 4 gigs would be much better ( 20 for 8 gigs, 30 for 16 gigs, and 40 for 32 gigs). Presently, a 32 gig memory card costs about 110$ ( don't remember off by hard), which is HALF of the system's cost. A bit overpriced, don't you think Sony?
