I'll go with N64,but only because of Nintendo's exclusives.
PS had a really good library.

Overall: Playstation
Best game: N64 Golden Eye
I like the variety of the Playstation library (like Ace combat2, Jet moto, Gran turismo2), so I like it more overall. but N64 games like GoldenEye 007, Mario Kart, and Mario64 are some of the best games of that generation. However there arent THAT many great games on the n64 in my opinion and there are some things the N64 just didnt do well (Racing and flying games for example)
Being objective, the Playstation had a way more diverse and quality library then the N64. However, I personally love the N64 library way more then the PS. So personally I'm going with the N64 library, however objectively the PS had the better library.
Overall the comparison is not even close in my opinion, with the Playstation being on top. Although, five of my favorite games (favorite even if a couple are multi plat) of all time came from teh N64 being Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark, Conkers Bad Fur Day, Resident Evil 2, and Vigilante 8.
I'm totally a Playstation guy. I have around 70 games in my PS1 collection, my N64 collection is like 20. So obviously, I prefer the Playstation library. It's larger, more diverse, and has plenty of it's own gems like the Resident Evils, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasies, King's Fields, Castlevania SotN, and so many more.

So you think Medal of Honor, Crash, Spyro, Gex, Jet Moto, CTR, Cool Boarders, MDK, Alundra, Vanark, Warhawk were higher-quality than GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Turok, Mario 64, Banjo, Conker, Wave Race 64, Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing, 1080 Snowboarding, Jet Force Gemini, Majora, Star Fox 64, Sin & Punishment, Rogue Squadron? ;)
I agree about PS1 having more games and more variation but I liked N64 games better so N64 it is for me.

Out of that list only Chrono Cross, Gran Turismo, Tekken 3 and MGS are of really high quality (and possibly SOTN).
Also, RE2 was on N64 too so count that out.

According to gamers and critics, Ape Escape was one of the best platformers on the system. As for RE2, the PS1 version is superior in terms of graphics and content (Dual Shock version).

You are naming a bunch of moderately good PS games with some of the best N64 games, so of course the PS looks like garbage with your specific comparison. Pound for pound, the PS had way more AAA titles in virtually any genre you can think of. The only genres that the N64 stood out above the PS were platformers and FPS games, however the PS was no sloach in those genres either.
But I'm on your side, I prefer the N64's library over the PS too.
Syphon Filter is a great game as far as Im concerned. As a matter of fact I thought the first 3 were good, and then the series went downhill a little.
The PS1 has more good games then the N64 has games total in its library in my opinion. The N64 still had some great games though.
Only 387 N64 games were released worldwide with only 299 releasing in the US (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_64_games) as opposed to 2,418 Playstation games according to this list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_games (which is actually closer to 3,000 in actuality)
Now before you "Wikipedia isnt a reliable source" me, the point is, the PS1 library is MANY TIMES larger. Going off these two lists 2,418/387= 6.25
So, the PS library is 625% larger... now, I realize MORE doesnt always equal BETTER, but in this case it overwhelmingly does in my opinion. I could make a list of good PS1 games, but it would take me all night.
I already posted once in this thread, so you can go back and see that 5 of my all time favorite games are on the N64, just to keep things in perspective.
A large portion of that list would be shovelware, or dated to the point of being terrible. For example: just about all the ea sports games from that gen are junk. A lot of stuff in the library was acceptable because it was novel that it was 3d.Syphon Filter is a great game as far as Im concerned. Playstation because it had a much bigger library with more diverse contents.
Games ranging from Bushido Blade, Chrono Chross, Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy series, Ape Escape, Tomba, Silent Hill, Parasite Eve and Dino Crisis, Tekken, don't get me started here. Platforming, horror, rpg's, 3p-action, strategy, genre's the N64 also had but in much less quantities. Just the occasional Command and Conquer and Resident Evil.
Nintendo 64 had some great games. C. Bad Fur Day, Mario 64, Mario Kart, Banjo, 007, Perfect Dark, Zelda, Super Smash Bros, Donkey Kong, Pokemon Stadium etc.
But the Playstation has the advantage with the huge amount of 3rd party games. Half of my library consists of relatively unknown 3rd party games that were absolutely amazing.

Bigger and better library.

Yes, I completely agree but the same holds true for N64 games as well. Personally I think PS1 games overall have aged better then N64 games. I used to LOVE playing Goldeneye, but the blocky textures, and low frame rates makes my eyes bleed now... lol
I dont know how I used to pour 1,000's of hours into that game.
PS1 games have a different stylizing and although not as beautiful in their artwork sometimes, going back and playing even the worse PS games is easier then playing the worse N64 games.
Also, I disagree about most the EA sports games. I dont really know why sports games get such a bad rep. other then the fact that a new installment is released year after year after year after....
Bottom line is, I see what you are saying, but I am a game player and a collector, and there are a TON of under rated gems hiding in the PS library. Not so much with the N64 however. With such a small library it is much harder to find any hidden gems in the N64 library.
Hidden gems on the PS include some of the following (which are all OUTSTANDING games that most people probably dont even know exist)
Ghost in the Shell
Tomba and Tomba 2
Pandemonium
Jumping Flash 2
Wild 9
Strider 2
Darkstalkers 3
Bloody Roar and Bloody Roar 2
Rival Schools
Bushido Blade 1 and 2
Destrega
Persona 1 and 2
Jade Cocoon
Vandal Hearts 1 and 2
Arc the Lad Collection
Alundra 1 and 2
Darkstone
Carnage Heart
Tactics Ogre
Intelligent Cube
Mr. Driller
Sheep
Speed Punks
Warhawk
Vib Ribbon
Battle Area Toshinden 3
Dino Crisis 1 and 2
Einhander
Guilty Gear
Hot Shots Golf
Koudelka
Road Trip
Trap Gunner
Torneko
I could keep adding more games, but my point is, there are more games in the PS1 that most people dont even know exist as there are on the N64. That doesnt mean they are all good, in fact a lot are complete garbage. The thing is that all the ones I listed are good and I could keep going like the Energizer bunny without stopping.

As I pointed out earlier, I think both consoles were worth owning. I just think that the quality of the best N64 games was immensely higher than the competition. The games released somehow never got stale throughout the life of the console, and even today. For example, Turok 2(and 3 for multiplayer) was a good game. The multiplayer was great at the time, but something always made you go back to Goldeneye. And I now disagree with people saying GOldeneye is unplayable. I used to side with that, but back when the game was out I controlled it just as well as I do Halo, today. It just takes some adjusting--except for the sniper rifle that thing stinks. Anyways, I know The "hidden gem" thing is important to a lot of people, but I like to look at this stuff in a realistic manner. You bring up Toshinden3. Big fan back then and one of the reasons I bought a Playstation after seeing it demo--wowed, actually. However, the game is just a clunky mess. I remember getting Toshinden 2 and wondering "why don't I like this game?". I suppose I just didn't want to admit that something I though was amazing originally, was actually an atrociously bad fighting game. Even magazine publications did the same thing. See, what sets the n64 on a pedestal, today, was its originality. The best games on the console are still completely playable today, original to the platform, or even yet to be toppled. Starfox is still the premier Rail shooter. There hasn't been another tetrisphere or Blast Corps. Wave Race is still the best water reding game. Etc. Now, when I look at the psx, I tend to draw up a lot of blanks, or I'll think of a game but then there are much better entries in the given genre. Twisted Metal 1/2 are amazing games. The best car combat games ever made, even relevant today(that new one stinks in comparison). Psx is most guilty of "wow, I used to think this was good." ***i actually thought nba shoot out was a good basketball game. Psx is most guilty of "wow, I used to think this was good." ***i actually thought nba shoot out was a good basketball game. Lol.Yeah, I feel what you are saying. I agree that the N64's handfull of best games are mostly better then the Playstations handfull of best games. SO if we are comparing the top 5 games on each console.... my vote goes to N64. Hell, possibly even top 10. However anything after that my vote would have to go to Playstation because there were not many more games that really wowed me than that.
I would say that Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Conkers Bad Fur Day, Ocarina of Time, Turok 2, Mario Tennis, NFL Blitz, and NBA Courtside are better then any counterparts on the Playstation, however outside of just a few more outstanding games this is where quality starts lacking. Pretty much all Nintendo and Rare games were outstanding.
I truly wish that the N64 had more great games, because the ones that were great were truly outstanding.... I would say that the N64 would have easily won with a larger library. Because although a larger portion of N64 games were good, for every 1 good game the Playstation had 3 and that is mostly due to librbrary size.
Subtracting RPG's from the Playstations lineup makes the competition a lot closer and since the N64 didnt really have many true RPG's I guess that would be fair.
Over the years my love for Nintendo started to fade with the N64, mostly due to lack of support. If this was an arguement about the Gamecube/PS2... I wouldnt be as understanding, not because the PS2 was so much better then the PS1 but because the N64 was so much better then the Gamecube.
Their is a good possibility that Nintendo may get my attention back with the Wii U. The over 50 launch titles are looking strong (from what we KNOW are being released) FINALLY games for ALL ages. If the Wii U can keep the strong support for ALL age groups while having as large as a library as the Wii and also reverting away from so much "novelty" motion control opting for a either or, or just controller type play, then the Wii U has a chance to get Nintendo back in the fight as being POSSIBLY just as good as the PS4 or 720 library if not better. With that being said though, Nintendo has a long way to go to reclaim the glory it has lost in my opinion.
It is great that they are starting to realize that long time Nintendo fans want classic gameplay with updated graphics. It also seems that they are renewing some IP's that have been dormant for a long time. Also the number of new quality IP's seems to be a MAJOR concern for Nintendo this go around, so things are DEFINATELY looking up.
One day I would love to say "Nintendo has once again taken the crown of gaming!"
Ape Escape best?Well out of what you listed, only Goldeneye, Mario 64, Banjo, Conker and Majora's Mask are of top quality. Also, Gex was on PS1 in a far superior version than on N64. Crash was the next best thing to Mario in platformers, it also did away with the annoying collectathon trend. Not to mention CTR trumped MK64 on all fours, it's cloning done right. The problem with N64 lies in what you listed; all the good N64 games were produced by Rare and Nintendo. The rest of N64's library is a sea of mediocre games, with the exception of two-three cult classics - the case is not the same with PSX, which had a variety of stellar games on almost every category and from different developers. PSX is also a beast on the RPG department, whereas I can only count 4 RPGs on N64. Taking Paper Mario out, the rest are crap. So yeah, we love the N64 for the 15 or so gems Rare & Nintendo have given us, but PSX objectively has the superior library.lolwat?
Out of that list only Chrono Cross, Gran Turismo, Tekken 3 and MGS are of really high quality (and possibly SOTN).
Also, RE2 was on N64 too so count that out.

Your numbers are off, I know you tried backing off wikipedia, but the Ps1 has less games than the PS2 and all current gen systems. Also the N64 usually used the same name for games in all region while on the PSX, there were many games with different names in all 3 and in some cases 4.Syphon Filter is a great game as far as Im concerned.

Yes, the PS1 did have more games but that's not to say N64 didn't have any worthwhile games.
And N64's 1st party games were arguably superior to PS1's (PS1 was heavily reliant on 3rd parties).
You don't consider Ape Escape high quality but you consider Tonic Trouble high quality? D:Dudersaper
I said worthwhile, not high quality.
Quality is debatable anyway so I don't see much point discussing that.
Lol Originality and Quality go to the N64 my dark backside. Especially originality. Also Dud Ape Escape is a pretty badly aged game now, but I agree it's better than things like Bubsy3d and Tonic Trouble Nameless likes so much.Amount of shovelware - PS1

I'll have to say Playstation simply because I was a big JRPG fan at the time. I loved the N64 for its 1st party titles and Banjo Kazooie.

No offense but Pac-Man World's quality is just as questionable as Tonic Trouble's is ;)
I can't speak on Pikachu's behalf but Mickey's Speedway was quite decent from what I've seen of it.
Yea, some of the games I mentioned were released on PS1 too, but I specifically mentioned the advantages the N64 versions had.
For example there's no comparison between the N64 and PS1 version of Shadowman - the PS1 one is worse in every way (DC one is best tho).
RE2 was quite an achievement for the N64 so you can give it credit where it's due.
They managed to squeeze two CDs into a 64-meg cartridge after all (even the CGI is there).
The graphics are also smoother and higher-res.
I think it should be noted that RE2 was a PS1 port and didn't make full use of N64's graphical capabilites.
The N64 exclusive RE Zero would be a better demonstration of it's prowess but got cancelled (and eventually released on the GC as a much different game).
Still, the textures in the N64 version are smoother and the character models slightly better.

Have you played Pac-Man World? Easily one of the most underrated games of that generation and an unsung gem of 3D platformer with some great level design.
As for Resident Evil 2
Here is a video that showed the difference between both versions:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmViSPAxLpM
Duo 2D capabilities and less compression, all 2D backgrounds looked better on the PS1 obviously.
But let's take a look at the rest of the game (what some people here like to ignore).
In fact, all models aren't very high polygonized and detailed, why the hell did they still suffered by texture warping and polygon clipping although the rest of the game is in 2D? Let's dont forget the lack of AA made everything what is in 3D heavily pixelated.
That was a problem you can't find on the N64, Dreamcast and NGC version (superior 3D capabilities).
Technically: 3D is more impressive than 2D.
Simple logic.
