I'm a huge fan of Retro games, especially 2D games. Although, I've owned a PS1 for over 10 years, I've never bought many games for it. I'm looking to pick up some games and I want to start with the 2D games on the system.

What 2D PS1 games would you recommend? I'm mainly looking for platformers, but other 2D suggestions are welcome too. Thanks.

Street Fighter Alpha 3, Abe's Odyssey, Rayman, Castlevania Symphony of the Night , Lunar 1 and 2 .

even though in all honesty, the PS1 isnt the isnt the best 2D system, its defenitly more of a 3D focused machine

The (platform) games that come to mind are Metal Slug, Tombi (mostly 2D) and Klonoa.

There are alot of incredible 2d rpgs for the ps1 aswell.

I understand that but I own or have played most of the major 2D games on earlier systems. I'm looking to pick up the few 2D gems on the PS1, and I am not extremely familiar with the PS1 library so I don't know where to start.

also you could never go wrong with the megaman series. maybe check out heart of darkness too~

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is considered one of the greatest games of all time, and it's a 2d sidescroller.

Well if you live in europe TC, you could pick up Mickey's Wild Adventure. It's a PS1 port of Mickey Mania from the Sega Mega CD, SNES and Mega Drive with much better graphics, voice samples and sound quality. I have it and it's great, tho a bit hard. Heck, theres even Earthworm Jim 2 and Rayman 1 on PS1.

Didn't know that. :P So I'll mention Raiden Project and Einhander. Both are side scrolling shooters and there some of the best around.

Not sure what exactly you're after so I'll add 2.5D games in too and basically make it a list of games which play in a 16-bit style

Castlevania Symphony of the Night - needs no introduction

Alundra - Very good Link to the Past ripoff

Gunners Heaven - Gunstar Heroes style game - import only

Oddworld series

Adventures of Lomax - very difficult platformer starring a lemming

Buster Bros Collection - a kind of shmup where you fire up at bubbles which split into more bubbles when shot (better than it sounds)

Mega Man series

Rayman

R-Type's

R-Type Delta

Silhouette Mirage

Strider 2 - awesome

Tomba series

Klonoa

Einhander

G-Darius

Wild 9 - weird grapple hook platformer made by Earthworm Jim people

Thunder Force V - Better on Saturn but the PS1 version is still excellent - Import only

Legend of Mana

In the Hunt - submarine shmup

Don Pachi Series - Import only

Lunar series - great 16-bit style RPG's

Breath of Fire 3

The Final Fantasy remakes

Norse by Northwest - Lost Vikings sequel

Street Fighter Alpha 3

Metal Slug X

Suikoden Series

Super Puzzle Fighter 2

Darkstalkers 3

Strikers 1945

Thats what I can think of at the moment, but there's so many that its hard to remember them all, and there's such a huge amount of PS1 games that there's still a lot I've yet to play (especially imports)

Please do NOT buy rayman 1. People say it's good, but It's so difficult that it is unfair.

Tombi. Oh my god. I had forgotten about that. Any recent versions or downloadable versions of Tombi? I feel like a big helping of nostalgia pudding! Yum yum.

Personally, to me games with 3D polygon graphics aren't 2D games regardless of if their gameplay is limited only to two dimensions.

Not true. Compared to countless other 2d platformers out there it's not that hard. But yeah by the standard of difficulty of games on the PS1 it's very hard. It's a good hard not a broken hard though and it's one of my favourite 2d platformers ever and one of my favourite games on the PS1. Anyway I cant think of many good 2D PS1 games other than Rayman and the Oddworld games.

Panzer_Zwei
I agree with that, but I'm looking more for the 2D gameplay style then just the graphics themselves. So, if the characters, backgrounds, etc. are 3D, I don't mind and welcome the suggestions.

I can definitely agree with those who recommend Suikoden I & II. They are role playing games, but the storyline in both is solid and they certainly have that old school feel to them. The unfortunate part is that Suikoden II is priced at like $100-$200 US on eBay due to it being such a rare game. =/

Hey... how about "Pandemonium!" and "Pandemonium! 2"???

Fantastic 2D platformer which has faux-3D environments but you don't actually ever deal with the third dimension, it just looks like it is... trippy, fun, great-controlling platformer... my favorite of the generation for sure.
