I'm used to gaming on a PC where there is no "generation" you just keep expanding your library.

What about consoles?

When the next gen comes out, what do you do with the older system and games?

Just keep em? Throw it in the closet? Sell?

I'm concerned because of rumors that they might announce the PS4 at E3.

So what am I gonna do with my PS3?

well assuming the PS4 isn't backwards compatible; I would say keep your PS3 and keep playing games on it. That's the really horrible deal with consoles. A lot of times consoles are no longer backwards compatible, so you have to set up multiple consles to play old games (I still have my PS2 and Xbox set up for this purpose). Either that or pay another $20 to download them on PSN.

You keep it and keep building the library for that console. I still buy PS2 games if something catches my eye.

There won't be any new consoles worth getting until 2014, and even when the new system's come out they will still support their old systems, hell the original Xbox was still up and running up until a year or 2 ago.

I keep all my systems. Probably put more hours on my Colecovision than my Xbox 360 this month. Gorfians take no prisoners.

I keep my old consoles, they're collector's items. I actually keep the original boxes for as long as I can. I actually regret chucking the boxes to my PS1 and PS2, but still have my PS3 box (it has my PS1 in it). Plus if they're still working I still play games on them. If the PS4 comes out in 2014, I don't plan on buying it till probably 2016, unless of course I fall into a pool of money and can afford it sooner.

I just keep playing it until the price of the next gen console gets down to a reasonable point. Then I keep the old console because, who knows; I might wanna play a game on it sometime.

Heh, for once a genuinely worthwhile question, although your statement about PC's is erroneous; PC's go through hardware generations roughly every 3 years and software generations every 5 to 7 years and backwards compatibility is never guaranteed without emulation, which is one of the reasons I got out of it; PC's take up far more space than a single console, but because of emulation issues, I find I need to maintain a DOS PC. That's about 95 lbs. of equipment with the CRT monitors.

I personally keep my hardware because I love my games, but it really all depends on how you are. Also on how much space you have. If backwards compatibility is guaranteed, I'd get rid of the PS3. If there's no backwards compatibility...you'll then keep it, as others have said. You'll know when the time comes.

I'm curious to know what DOS games you are having problems playing? I find 'DOSBox' works well for all of my old DOS games, and can play them all on my current PC.

I have a bunch of younger nieces and nephews, so when I get a new system, I give my older console to them to enjoy. I just got the newer 360 slim, so I let my niece barrow my older 360 (thats out of warranty) and told her to play it all she wants but once it breaks to give it back to me.

I use to keep my older systems but after a while, I chose to give them away to family members or friends to enjoy.

I wouldn't worry about that, there have been quite a few articles about how there are no plays for any kind of PS4 debut at E3 2012. As far as what to do with your old gear I say keep em around. I certainly enjoy having my old toys around.

Anything that needs a 486 or low end pentium. This is because my main computer is a P3 1gig. I dumped over $1200 into it back in the day, but because of all of the video card issues I had, most games weren't playable. My laptop is a P4M 1.6, so I could give it a try, but frankly...I have a P3 450 with Windows 98 that works perfectly fine for everything but CyberMage (soundcard issue), so why would I bother configuring a virtual autoexec.bat and config.sys when I don't have to? :P

I keep them until they're no longer needed or supported, then sell them or give them away or lose them over time.

I think 360 will enjoy a good life after the new XBOX myself, as some publishers won't be ready to go next gen, or will keep putting the game out on 360 and it's successor. Same with PS3. Wii is dead as can be though.

I usually end up keeping mine depending on my library for that particular system. Sometimes I do sell it if the new console has backwards compatibility.

WiiU comes out this year.

@TC: keep the consoles if you have the space and specially if their successor doesn't have backwards compatibility. If you notice you haven't played a console for a year or more, just pass it on or sell it. No reason to keep it. Unless you're a collector; but I'm not here to adress personal issues/disorders.

I still keep all my old console out for display mostly and I'll occasionally pop in a game to the genesis ps1 nes etc.. Handhelds are put away safely unless I want to play them again. The ds phat, game boy advance and game boy color are put away and are scarcely taken out. I use my gameboy micro occasionally and my 3ds is pretty much getting all the attention. Gaming PC stays out all the time because well PC ya know.

Most new systems allow you to play your old games from previous generations on them, but overall you either keep your games or sale them it's up to you really, I think most of the rumors we are having a nothing but smoke, but we will wait and see.

Playing old games is always a problem, PC is no exception. Unless we're going to pretend every game made for Windows 95 runs flawlessly on Windows 7, or that we don't need special programs like DOSBox to play games older than that.

That was also one of my biggest issues when I moved from PC to console. I put my games on a shelf, they are still visible to all and I can go there and pick one to play them. Just create a shelf and separate your games through different systems. It's awesome.

Truth. Honestly, getting my older PC games to run in Linux is usually less of a pain in the ass than trying to get them to run on modern Windows. It is especially true for Win95 and prior games (I <3 DOSbox) but even games as recent as Knights of the Old Republic run like ass on Windows 7.

I keep them all so that I can amuse myself by arranging them in interesting tableux celebrating the single man's lifestyle. With a little imagination I've been able to take those dusty old machines and work them into pieces such as Need To Open A Window (2010), I Thought I Traded This Copy Of Rainbow Six: Black Arrow In Years Ago (2011) and I Will Never Feel The Touch Of A Woman, Ever (2012). I plan to exhibit as soon as galleries stop putting the phone down.
